Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This little book arrived in its present form almost by accident. Over the years, Ive scribbled bits of poems here and there, and while trying to impress a lady, I put about twenty poems together and was astonished when she returned those poems in a startling waterfall of words. This presentation startled me, to see my words displayed in such a chaotic yet evocative manner. She was the first deep voice of encouragement. Sometime later, while in Glastonbury, I found myself inspired to write more poetry, eventually realizing my collection had expanded to a body of work that could be presented in book form. The initial name for this book was Snapshots, which describes my poetry perfectly. Firstly, quick insights into whatever is playing out in the moment waking up in the morning to a dream continuing. Secondly, reflecting back emotionally the unfinished episodes of yesteryear a previous landlady wiping out two months rent so I could start afresh. Thirdly, joyful ranting on my soapbox, verbally challenging another view. Then there is a prayerful side to it, which I find essential and which is nice to share. Some of these are part of my continuous practice. My present life cultivation is holding with others the energy of the five-acre field You will find the five-acre field on the ground where you walk!

Book excerpt: The growing presence in Western society of non-mainstream faiths and spiritual practices poses a dilemma for the law. For example, if a fortune teller promises to tell the future in exchange for cash, and both parties believe in the process, has a fraud been committed? Building on a thorough history of the legal regulation of fortune-telling laws in four countries, Faith or Fraud examines the impact of people who identify as “spiritual but not religious” on the future legal understanding of religious freedom. Traditional legal notions of religious freedom were conceived in the context of organized religion. Jeremy Patrick examines how the law needs to adapt to a contemporary spirituality in which individuals can select concepts drawn from multiple religions, philosophies, and folklore to develop their own idiosyncratic belief systems. Faith or Fraud exposes the law’s failure to recognize individual spirituality as part of modern religious practice, concluding that legal understanding of freedom of religion has not evolved along with religion itself.

Book excerpt: Notes from a bibliophile on the lure of rare and first editions, the beauty of dust jackets, the thrill of browsing in antiquarian bookshops, the bibliomania of book thieves, movies about books, and the inner life of a reader. The Groaning Shelf is not so much a book about books as a book about books about books. These little essays capture the drama of bookish obsession, the joys and snares of the bookish life and the pleasures of bibliophily.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How vagrancy, as legal and imaginative category, shaped the role of policing in colonialism, racial formation, and resource distribution In this innovative book demonstrating the important role of eighteenth-century literary treatments of policing and vagrancy, Nicolazzo offers a prehistory of police legitimacy in a period that predates the establishment of the modern police force. She argues that narrative, textual, and rhetorical practices shaped not only police and legal activity of the period, but also public conceptions of police power. Her extensive research delves into law and literature on both sides of the Atlantic, tracking the centrality of vagrancy in establishing police power as a form of sovereignty crucial to settler colonialism, slavery, and racial capitalism. The first book in several generations to address policing and vagrancy in the eighteenth century, and the first in the field to center race and empire in its account of literary vagrancy, Nicolazzo's work is a significant contribution to the field of eighteenth-century literary and cultural studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Introduction to Swaminarayan Hinduism, third edition, offers a comprehensive study of a contemporary form of Hinduism. Begun as a revival and reform movement in India 200 years ago, it has now become one of the fastest growing and most prominent forms of Hinduism. The Swaminarayan Hindu transnational network of temples and institutions is expanding in India, East Africa, the UK, USA, Australasia, and in other African and Asian cities. The devotion, rituals, and discipline taught by its founder, Sahajanand Swami (1781-1830) and elaborated by current leaders in major festivals, diverse media, and over the Internet, help preserve ethnic and religious identity in many modern cultural and political contexts. Swaminarayan Hinduism, here described through its history, divisions, leaders, theology and practices, provides valuable case studies of contemporary Hinduism, religion, migrants, and transnationalism. This new edition includes up-to-date information about growth, geographic expansion, leadership transitions, and impact of Swaminarayan institutions in India and abroad.
