Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spiritual Perspective and Other Sermons This saying was addressed to Scribes and Pharisees. As a class, they were given to make religion too much a matter of outward forms and ceremonies - too little a matter of the heart. There were no doubt Pharisees and Pharisees and an idea of Pharisaism derived from the New Testament alone would probably be exceedingly unjust. But still, making every allowance and giving them credit for a large measure of real earnestness and real goodness, there can be no doubt that the average Pharisee was far too much engrossed with ceremonial considerations, with conduct rather than with character, with ritual rather than with moral uprightness: and Jesus, with his perception that it is character which gives to conduct its abiding grace and glory, laid his finger at once upon this want of proportion in the prevailing views of duty and religion, and tried to make people discern more clearly what things were of real importance and what were comparatively insignificant.
