In a ward of the hospital we see a skilful Surgeon, who has studied the delicate bodily structure which has been built after the divine plan, as he presses the knife along the path God has marked out with infinite precision. Because that path has been followed in the making, it can and must be followed in the mending. We stand breath less, because this man is a sort of high priest min istering in the most holy place. It is a service Of sacrifice and suffering for one form Of salvation. We go into a laboratory, and the devout man who is at home there assures us that he has not created nor decided anything; he is merely finding out how God has done and still does his work. We go into a factory and find men who have called in God's forces of steam and electricity - forces which they cannot see nor understand - to do their bidding and minister to human progress. These material machines are efficient just in proportion as they are orthodox. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: An indirect response to Darwin's landmark work "On the Origin of Species," Drummond shows that faith and science actually go more hand in hand than most of us as theologians are willing to accept. By going over the facts of science, Drummond is able to show how the two relate so that we can reconcile our Christian beliefs in the world that is obsessed with the Scientific Method.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Natural Law in the Spiritual World” is a 1883 work by Scottish writer and evangelist Henry Drummond. Within it, Drummond explores the connections between the world of religion and spirituality, and the physical world. He maintains that the ostensible dichotomy between the spiritual and the physical is in fact illusory, and that faith is actually aligned with science. Published only a few decades subsequent to Darwin’s landmark “On the Origin of Species”, Drummond’s attempt to reconcile evolution and God constitutes one of the most significant books related to Christian faith and scientific progress. Contents include: “Religion”, “Analysis of Introduction”, “Biogenesis”, “Degeneration”, “Growth”, “Death”, “Mortification”, “Eternal Life”, “Environment”, “Conformity to Type”, “Semi-parasitism”, “Parasitism”, “Classification”, etc. Rev Prof Henry Drummond (1851–1897) was a Scottish biologist, evangelist, lecturer, and writer. He had a considerable religious influence on his own generation, and his sermon "The Greatest Thing in the World" is still popular within Christian circles. Other notable works by this author include: “Natural Law in the Spiritual World” (1883), “Tropical Africa” (1888), and “The Greatest Thing in the World: an Address” (1890). Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. It is with this in mind that we are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with an essay on religion by James Young Simpson.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ralph Waldo Emerson (May 25, 1803 - April 27, 1882) was an American essayist, lecturer, and poet who led the transcendentalist movement of the mid-19th century. He was seen as a champion of individualism and a prescient critic of the countervailing pressures of society, and he disseminated his thoughts through dozens of published essays and more than 1,500 public lectures across the United States. Emerson gradually moved away from the religious and social beliefs of his contemporaries, formulating and expressing the philosophy of transcendentalism in his 1836 essay "Nature." Following this work, he gave a speech entitled "The American Scholar" in 1837, which Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. considered to be America's "intellectual Declaration of Independence." Emerson wrote most of his important essays as lectures first and then revised them for print. His first two collections of essays, Essays: First Series (1841) and Essays: Second Series (1844), represent the core of his thinking. They include the well-known essays "Self-Reliance," "The Over-Soul," "Circles," "The Poet" and "Experience." Together with "Nature," these essays made the decade from the mid-1830s to the mid-1840s Emerson's most fertile period. Emerson wrote on a number of subjects, never espousing fixed philosophical tenets, but developing certain ideas such as individuality, freedom, the ability for humankind to realize almost anything, and the relationship between the soul and the surrounding world. Emerson's "nature" was more philosophical than naturalistic: "Philosophically considered, the universe is composed of Nature and the Soul." Emerson is one of several figures who "took a more pantheist or pandeist approach by rejecting views of God as separate from the world." He remains among the linchpins of the American romantic movement, and his work has greatly influenced the thinkers, writers and poets that followed him. When asked to sum up his work, he said his central doctrine was "the infinitude of the private man." Emerson is also well known as a mentor and friend of Henry David Thoreau, a fellow transcendentalist.

An argument which have attracted serious readers as Drummond shares thoughts on scientific logics in physical world into the spiritual state of being. Prof Henry Drummond was a Scottish evangelist, biologist, writer and lecturer. His writings were too nicely adapted to the needs of his own day to justify the expectation that they would long survive it, but few men exercised more religious influence in their own generation, especially on young men.
