Book excerpt: This introduces us to one of the most unassuming leaders of the church in South Africa during the apartheid era. Joe Wing's influential leadership in the United Congregational Church of Southern Africa, the Witwatersrand Council of Churches, the Church Unity Commission, the South African Council of Churches, and the Federal Theological Seminary placed him at the heart of the Christian struggle for justice in society and unity in the Church. This volume includes a biographical essay by Steve de Gruchy, a reflection on his theology and ecclesiology by Desmond van der Water, and shorter essays in tribute to him from a range of authors. Throughout these essays, the faith and commitment of this servant of God bears testimony to the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the most difficult of circumstances. His was indeed an undaunted spirit.

Book excerpt: Embrace your identity as God's beloved, step out of your own brokenness, and bring hope to a darkened world. You have a calling to fulfill. Are you ready to take the risk of moving past your past to fulfill it? Christine Caine faced hurdles that seemed insurmountable--abuse, abandonment, and the loss of a child. Yet she decided to answer God's call on her life no matter where it would lead her. Many times, the only thing that kept her going was knowing that she was God's beloved. She was God's chosen. Secure in those truths, she moved beyond her pain so she could live the adventure of bringing God's light and love to others around the world. In this updated and expanded edition of her bestselling book, Undaunted, Christine challenges you to embrace the reality of God's love so you can speak it to others as you live out your own unique calling. As Christine writes, "Love like Christ's can lift you out of betrayal and hurt. It can deliver you from any mess. Love like that can release you from every prison of fear and confusion. And love like God's can fill you up till it spills out of you, and you have to speak about it, share it, spread it around." You already have all you need to bring hope to others. With additional biblical teaching, new stories, and a new epilogue, this updated and expanded edition of Undaunted will awaken you to how God wants to work through you and in you as you dare to become who God created you to be. Book excerpt: The survival of the British monarchy is a phenomenon of modern world history, and conventional wisdom holds that this success is due in large part to the royal family's subservience to Parliament, especially since 1688. Arguing that the reality is very different, this book explores the political role of the monarchy from George III to George VI, with particular emphasis on the political insight of the latter, the author sets out to show just how close was the relationship between the King and Winston Churchill during the darkest days of World War II, and the extent to which an underrated monarch helped to steer Britain towards victory.

While examining the extent and nature of contemporary cultural and religious discrimination in rural Canadian communities, the editors and contributors explore the many efforts by rural citizens, community groups, and municipalities to counter intolerance, build inclusive communities, and become better neighbours. Throughout, scholars and community leaders focus on building new understandings, language, and ways of thinking about diversity and inclusion that will resonate with rural people. Book excerpt: The so-called Phony War from September 1939 to May 1940 occupies a peculiar yet distinct place in popular memory. All the sensations of war, except the fighting, were present; yet, instead of massed air attacks and great land battles, very little happened. The British government was said to be complacent, and the people downright bored. Then, France fell to German attack, and the small British army was evacuated (minus its equipment) from Dunkirk. Reaction to this major strategic catastrophe was naturally to blame the men deemed guilty for bringing the nation to the verge of humiliating defeat. In sharp contrast to previous studies, Smart argues that there was more to the phony war than governmental complacency, that the period was more than a foolish or frivolous ante-chamber to a later more heroic phase. The extent to which the guilty men verdict on the first nine months of Britain's Second World War has stuck remains surprising. The notion that the phony war was a necessary, indeed over-determined, prelude to catastrophe has become cemented over time. Examining the workings of the Anglo-French leadership during this period, Smart picks this thesis apart and argues that disaster was not necessarily, still less inevitably, just around the corner. He concludes that Anglo-French decision-making during this time was basically sound, that the soldiers were well equipped and in good-heart, and that there was no malaise eating away at the entente. This study offers a challenging reappraisal of the phony war from a British perspective.

Book excerpt: The Haunting of Hillside Manor: A Terror Beyond Imagination For decades, the old asylum on the grounds of Hillside Manor has been the subject of local legends and tales of horror. And when the Johnsons move into the old mansion, they soon discover that the legends are far more than just stories. As they settle into their new home, the Johnsons begin to experience strange occurrences, from objects moving on their own to whispers and moans in the night. And as the haunting grows more intense, they know that they are facing a force more powerful than they have ever encountered before. Desperate to find a way to rid themselves of the malevolent energy, the Johnsons call upon the help of local experts, from paranormal investigators to music experts, to help them understand the dark history of their home and banish the spirits that seek to claim it as their own. But as they delve deeper into the history of Hillside Manor, the Johnsons uncover a truth that is far stranger and more terrifying than anything they could have imagined. From the cursed history of the asylum to the possessed artifacts that litter their home, they are forced to confront the darkest corners of the human experience, and the malevolent forces that seek to claim their souls. As they fight to reclaim their home from the forces of darkness, the Johnsons must summon all their courage, faith, and determination to overcome the horrors that lurk within the walls of Hillside Manor. They will face their worst fears, confront the demons of their past, and ultimately emerge victorious, proving that the power of love and the human spirit is stronger than any force of darkness. With spine-tingling suspense and unforgettable characters, The Haunting of Hillside Manor is a thrilling tale of horror, mystery, and redemption, a story that will leave readers breathless until the very last page.
