Book excerpt: Combining a gripping personal story with practical advice on such subjects as diet, training, family, romance, and much more, Laila Ali shows readers of all ages and backgrounds how to transform the demons of self-doubt and stagnation into positive, winning energy. Since her professional debut three years ago, Laila Ali has set the world of women's boxing on fire. The daughter of the world's most famous boxer, she has more than come into her won, winning ten straight fights with breathtaking confidence and poise - including a bout with Jacqui Frazier that was the most highly publicized female boxing event ever. But Laila's journey to success was not without struggle. In this revealing book, she describes - with striking humility and a streetwise wisdom beyond her years - how she made many mistakes along the way, but eventually managed to overcome every obstacle that life threw at her. In fifteen straight-talking, hard-hitting "rounds," Laila offers her dynamic formula for physical, emotional, and mental power, and demonstrates how to sidestep feelings of self-pity and defeatism. Some of the life experiences that Laila recounts are ones many young people face, while others are related to her unique circumstances. Born with a proverbial silver spoon in her mouth, she never felt comfortable, as a child, in her parents' mansion - surrounded by maids, celebrity visitors, and hangers-on - and longed for a "normal" existence. As an adolescent, she became increasingly drawn into negative behavior. But after she found herself, at age sixteen, in juvenile hall, Laila realized it was time to make a change in her life. She resolved to become a responsible, financially independent adult, and soon achieved her long-time dream of owning her own manicure business. Ultimately, however, she would find success in another arena: professional boxing. Revised and updated in 2017.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Interpreting Spirit is both a consideration of the Spirit's role in the interpretation of Scripture and a celebration of renewal scholarship. It examines those who have focused on the Spirit's role in their hermeneutical considerations, recognizing common, uniting themes amidst the diversity of scholarly approach and opinion. Working on the principle that the Spirit communicates in ways that seek to unify and celebrate the other, Mather works diachronically from 1970, identifying and drawing together these common, uniting hallmarks into a collective understanding. Pivotal to Mather's argument is her emphasis that we do not just interpret Scripture, but that the Spirit through Scripture, and working in our lives in ways that lead us towards Scripture, interprets us. The Interpreting Spirit is the first comprehensive analysis of the conversation surrounding pneumatic interpretation that has been taking place, particularly among renewal scholars, since 1970. It seeks to answer the notoriously difficult question, ""What does the Spirit do in the process of biblical interpretation?""

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of the theology of mission has developed variously across Christian traditions in the last century. Pentecostal scholars and missiologists also have made their share of contributions to this area. This book brings the insights of pentecostal theologian Amos Yong to the discussion. It delineates the major features of what will be argued as central to a viable vision and praxis for Christian mission in a postmodern, post-Christendom, post-Enlightenment, post-Western, and postcolonial world. What emerges will be a distinctively pentecostally- and evangelically-informed missiological theology, one rooted in the Christian salvation-history narrative of Incarnation and Pentecost that is yet open to the world in its many and various cultural, ethnic, religious, and disciplinary discourses and realities. The argument unfolds through dialogical engagements with the work of others, concrete case studies, and systematic theological reflection. Yong's pneumatological and missiological imagination proffers a model for Christian theology of mission suitable for the twenty-first-century global and pluralistic context even as it exemplifies how a missiological understanding of theology itself unfolds amidst engagements with contemporary ecclesial practices and academic/theological impulses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God, what’s it all about? How often have you heard these exact words? How many people ask that question? What is it that they are asking? Why are they asking such a question of God? When do they ask these questions? Most importantly, how do we get our answers to what it is all about? These answers, just like all of the answers in the universe, come from God’s will. This is why we always confirm with God, “God, your will, not mine be done!” God loves us more than we could ever understand. That’s why deep in our soul, we know God’s will will be the driving force for our success here on Earth, but most importantly in heaven. With God’s help, you will create an ongoing relationship with the Holy Spirit’s message. Once you accept God’s Word and you listen openly to it, you will only need to listen, and you will hear what God is saying to you.

Book excerpt: This fifth Missional Church Series volume seeks to bring historical clarity, biblical and theological substance, and practical guidance to church planting. The nine contributors -- many of them experienced church-planting pastors -- offer diverse yet cohesive perspectives on the Spirit's missional church planting in our time. Section One presents three essays which address missional church planting as a theological practice, with particular attention given to the activity of the Holy Spirit within the context of God's Trinitarian life. Section Two grounds church planting initiatives in the generative soil of story. The two essays in this section narrate how specific congregations provide glimpses of the Holy Spirit in action, supplying the reader with hints for how history might lead to future expectations of the Holy Spirit's ongoing church planting activity. Three essays in Section Three focus on new frontiers appearing on the church planting horizon, and an epilogue provides a sermon which orients church planting efforts in witness that flows from the heart of God. In this book readers will find fresh insights into an exciting new future created and led by the Spirit. It took me over 3,000 pages in ten volumes to say How and What is Important to Believe. Collectively, in this seven-part Logos Work of ten volumes, I seek to explain by experience who Jesus is, who God is, who the Holy Spirit is, what the Bible is, why it is crucial to life that we believe in them, what “belief” is, what “to be saved” is, just how Salvation is effected, what the “take-away” benefits are, and how to find meaning and purpose in life. As said, each of these ten volumes is able to stand alone as God’s Book of Life, portraying Life with the Holy Spirit by belief in the Christ of Jesus as Savior to eternal life with God. The ten volumes relate my Story of Writing God's Book of Life, using nonfiction essays and poetry with daily help of divine intervention in producing the seven-Logos Work of ten volumes, and the four supporting volumes seek to fully understand and explain this work inspired by the Holy Spirit, the Christ of Jesus. The action of God fulfilled for him in seven years all of Rodger Crafton's dreams of becoming a writer of poetry and prose, an armchair philosopher, and an artist working in his new, upstairs garage atelier.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What’s a cross-cultural discipler? It’s someone who crosses distinct cultural barriers—whether at home or abroad—to share the gospel and develop other effective Christian disciples. Think of the apostle Paul who was born into a Jewish heritage but preached in Greece and Rome among other places, or modern day missionaries, both short-term and long-term, who bravely go where God sends them despite the challenges of language and lifestyle differences when they get there. Called to Reach is a much-needed book of encouragement and training for cross-cultural disciplers new and old. Based on the authors’ dynamic experiences, it defines seven characteristics that best enhance the effectiveness of disciplers in overcoming cultural barriers and emphasizes the importance of personally growing in spiritual maturity with every outreach opportunity. Throughout, Jesus is presented as the model cross-cultural discipler, for He left the culture of Heaven to disciple us in our earthly culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary thought has been profoundly shaped by the early-twentieth-century turn toward synchronic models of explanation, which analyze phenomena as they appear at a single moment, rather than diachronically as they develop through time. But the relationship between time and system remains unexplained by the standard account of this shift. Through a new history of systematic thinking across the humanities and sciences, The Writing of Spirit argues that nineteenth-century historicism wasn’t simply replaced by a more modern synchronic perspective. The structuralist revolution consisted rather in a turn toward time’s absolutely minimal conditions, and thus also toward a new theory of diachrony. Pourciau arrives at this surprising and powerful conclusion through an analysis of language-scientific theories over the course of two centuries, associated with thinkers from Jacob Grimm and Richard Wagner to the Russian Futurists, in domains as disparate as historical linguistics, phonology, acoustics, opera theory, philosophy, poetics, and psychology. The result is a novel contribution to a pressing contemporary question—namely, what role history should play in the interpretation of the present.
