Download or read book Spirits and Scientists written by David J. Hess and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brazilian Spiritism (espiritismo, kardecismo) is an important middle-class religious movement whose followers believe in communication with the dead via spirit mediums and in healing illnesses by means of spiritual therapies. Unlike Anglo-Saxon Spiritualists, Brazilian Spiritists count among their number a well-developed and institutionalized intellectual elite that has reinterpreted northern hemisphere parapsychology and developed its own alternative medicine and sociology of religion. As a result, the mediation between popular religion (especially Afro-Brazilian religious practices) and the orthodoxies of the universities, the state, and the medical profession. Situating Spiritist intellectual thought in what he calls a broader ideological arena, Hess examines Spiritism in the context of religion, science, political ideology, medicine, and even the social sciences. Hess challenges the legacy of French sociologist Roger Bastide, who saw in Spiritism an elitist, middle-class ideology. In the process, Spirits and Scientists provides a new approach to middle-class religious movements in Latin America.
Book Synopsis Science and Spiritual Practices by : Rupert Sheldrake
Download or read book Science and Spiritual Practices written by Rupert Sheldrake and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2018-08-28 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I have personally adopted many of the practices Rupert describes in his book and experienced more love, joy, empathy, gratitude, and equanimity as a result. We are all indebted to Rupert, who has tirelessly brought us deep insights from both science and spirituality.” ―Deepak Chopra The effects of spiritual practices are now being investigated scientifically as never before, and many studies have shown that religious and spiritual practices generally make people happier and healthier. In this pioneering book, Rupert Sheldrake shows how science helps validate seven practices on which many religions are built, and which are part of our common human heritage: meditation, gratitude, connecting with nature, relating to plants, rituals, singing and chanting, and pilgrimage and holy places. Sheldrake summarizes the latest scientific research on what happens when we take part in these practices, and suggests ways that readers can explore these fields for themselves. For those who are religious, Science and Spiritual Practices will illuminate the evolutionary origins of their own traditions and give a new appreciation of their power. For the nonreligious, this book will show how the core practices of spirituality are accessible to all. This is a book for anyone who suspects that in the drive toward radical secularism, something valuable has been left behind. Rupert Sheldrake compellingly argues that by opening ourselves to the spiritual dimension, we may find the strength to live more fulfilling lives.
Book Synopsis Measuring Spiritual Maturity by : Randy Tompkins
Download or read book Measuring Spiritual Maturity written by Randy Tompkins and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2019-10-21 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus commissioned His apostles""and, by extension, the church""to make disciples. Many church leaders have come to the conclusion that attending worship services and Bible study classes will result in making disciples. A review of statistical reports indicates a majority of church members and attenders do not believe this process will work, or they have come to the conclusion they do not want to become disciples. The 2010 US Religion Census report indicated 79% of the 150,686,156 members, children, and other attenders did not attend worship services. It also reported over 60% of the same group did not attend Bible study classes. In 2014 one of the major denominations in the United States reported 63% of church members did not attend worship services and 62% did not attend Bible study classes. There are literally thousands of spiritual surveys available to church leaders. A majority of these surveys develop conclusions based on a single survey being administered or two surveys being administered several months apart. If a disciple-making process is to be effective, there needs to be a method of measuring the progress of individuals moving toward spiritual maturity. This type of measurement would produce a visual of spiritual growth, spiritual decline, or spiritual non-growth. The only way to measure the spiritual progress of an individual is to create a measurement of the various elements of the spiritual life. The process of measuring spiritual maturity in this book is self-contained within the participating church, and the responses of the participating individuals are highly confidential and warehoused by the participating church.

Book Synopsis The Science of Spirit by : Luis Portela
Download or read book The Science of Spirit written by Luis Portela and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2020-12-18 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the 20th century and into the new millennium, humanity has made enormous advancements in science and technology. Spiritual enlightenment, however, has gone relatively neglected, as fascination with material progress tends to keep us focused on the physical world, giving less importance to universal values, to being, to spiritual life. Parapsychological research has produced significant findings over the last few decades, and science has the obligation to continue exploring this area, seeking to contribute to the spiritual enlightenment of humanity. This book examines evidence of traditional psychic phenomena, promoting a more comprehensive understanding of them, and offering new perspective to see ourselves as particles of "universal energy," interconnected with all others.

Book Synopsis Opening Our Spiritual Eyes by : Qala Sri'ama Phoenix
Download or read book Opening Our Spiritual Eyes written by Qala Sri'ama Phoenix and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2011-02-22 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Karma is generally understood as personal, and clearing karma is often considered an individual effort, with individual rewards. In Opening Our Spiritual Eyes, spiritual teacher Sri’ama Qala Phoenix shows how karmic clearing can also be used in collective healing. Karma is shared within families and communities, and clearing karma releases it from the etheric body of our children and future generations. The book was inspired by the ongoing “Celestial Project,” a four-year global endeavor of Australia’s Divine University that began in 2009. The project involves people gathering worldwide on specific dates to focus on the karmic cleaning of the etheric body of a major city. Opening Our Spiritual Eyes draws on the author’s experiences of meeting the Enlightened Masters, those wise spirit guides who, through her, present new understandings of the collective karma held within the world’s primary cities and our etheric bodies—and how to free ourselves, our families, and our world from it with grace. Revealing what Sri’ama Qala Phoenix calls “the true nature of the divine plan for humanity and our Earth,” the book shares essential keys for how we can become empowered to live in alignment with our divine purpose.
Book Synopsis The Full Value of Parks by : David Harmon
Download or read book The Full Value of Parks written by David Harmon and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2003-07-14 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Full Value of Parks is the first comprehensive look at the values associated with parks and other kinds of protected areas. Much has been written about the importance of parks to the tourism industry, yet the reasons why people care deeply about them usually have little or nothing to do with money. Instead, people value parks as sacred sanctuaries and places of spiritual self-discovery, as settings of breathtaking beauty, as venues of scientific inquiry, as destinations for much-needed recreation-even as places where one can go to heal a wounded psyche. The profound attachment that people feel to the world's great natural areas and cultural sites arises from an incredibly diverse, complex, and sometimes conflicting array of values. After a thorough overview of the kinds of values found in parks, the unique challenges of managing parks to accommodate differing viewpoints are surveyed in this path-breaking book. Drawing on insights from a broad group of international experts, and offering examples from Siberia to tropical Africa, from the Andes to the Australian outback, The Full Value of Parks is an engaging and lucid exploration of the entire range of benefits and values of protected areas-from economics to the intangible.
