Book excerpt: A Reaper's Creed. An Oath to keep. A Soul to save. Just as Xavier began his training as a Reaper Knight, he was flung off a cliff by an assassin sent to kill the Princess of Death, and vanished into the ocean. But Xavier’s NecroSeam somehow stitched itself to another living vessel, connecting his soul to someone who shared half his necromantic ability… His twin brother. The co-existing brothers secretly embark on a mission up to the sun-kissed Land Realm in search of Xavier’s missing body, only to discover this surface realm is on the brink of war. Before they can be normal again, the twin Reapers must battle colossal dragons and legions of soul-eating creatures controlled by an ancient demon queen. As Death Knights-in-training, they took an oath… and now there’s more than one soul to save.

Book excerpt: The Himalaya, a global biodiversity hotspot, sustains about one-fifth of the humankind. Nestled within the north-western mountain ranges of the Himalaya, the Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) State harbours more than half of the biodiversity found in the Indian Himalaya. The wide expanse of State, spread across the subtropical Jammu, through the temperate Kashmir valley, to the cold arid Ladakh, is typical representative of the extensive elevational and topographical diversity encountered in the entire Himalaya. This book, the most comprehensive and updated synthesis ever made available on biodiversity of the J&K State, is a valuable addition to the biodiversity literature with global and regional relevance. The book, arranged into 7 parts, comprises of 42 chapters contributed by 87 researchers, each of whom is an expert in his/her own field of research. The precious baseline data contained in the book would form the foundation for assessing current status of knowledge about the bioresources, identify the knowledge gaps, and help prioritization of conservation strategies to steer the sustainable use of biodiversity in this Himalayan region. Given the breadth of topics covered under the banner of biodiversity in this book, it can surely serve as a model for documentation of biodiversity in other regions of the world. The book will be of immense value to all those who, directly or indirectly, have to deal with biodiversity, including students, teachers, researchers, naturalists, environmentalists, resource managers, planners, government agencies, NGOs and the general public at large.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In early twentieth century British India, prior to the arrival of digital medias and after the rise of nationalist political movements, a small-town paper from the margins of society became a key player in Urdu journalism. Published in the isolated market town of Bijnor, Madinah grew to hold influence across North India and the Punjab while navigating complex issues of religious and political identity. In Print and the Urdu Public, Megan Robb uses the previously unexamined perspective of the Madinah to consider Urdu print publics and urban life in South Asia. Through a discursive and material analysis of Madinah, the book explores how Muslims who had settled in ancestral qasbahs, or small towns, used newspapers to facilitate a new public consciousness. The book demonstrates how Madinah connected the Urdu newspaper conversation both explicitly and implicitly with Muslim identity and delineated the boundaries of a Muslim public conversation in a way that emphasized rootedness to local politics and small urban spaces. The case study of this influential but understudied newspaper reveals how a network of journalists with substantial ties to qasbahs produced a discourse self-consciously alternative to the Western-influenced, secularized cities. Megan Robb augments the analysis with evidence from contemporary Urdu, English, and Hindi papers, government records, private diaries, private library holdings, ethnographic interviews, and training materials for newspaper printers. This thoroughly researched volume recovers the erasure of qasbah voices and proclaims the importance of space and time in definitions of the public sphere in South Asia. Print and the Urdu Public demonstrates how an Urdu newspaper published from the margins became central to the Muslim public constituted in the first half of the twentieth century.

Book excerpt: Peter is lost. The last time he felt found was when his mother was alive. Before bad things started to happen. Before hopping from foster home to foster home. But he has a plan. All he has to do is find Neverland - find his mother - and everything will be alright again. First, he has to get rid of his new foster family. Ruth is tired. Tired of being left behind, the outcast, the misfit. Tired of the way people look at her out of the corners of their eyes. Tired of feeling like she doesn't belong. When Peter comes along, the stories he tells her seem too good to be true. But she's just desperate enough to listen. William is scared. Scared of what would happen if his sister knew the truth. Scared he'll lose her, lose everything. Scared that, every time he closes his eyes, he'll see the face he just wants to forget. Then, along comes Peter. Peculiar, hopeful Peter with his promises of wonder and adventure and a magical place called Neverland. Will doesn't believe it, but when it comes to his sister, Ruth, he'll do anything. Dark and surreal, Peter Pan meets Bridge to Terabithia in this young adult contemporary novel that explores the cavernous depths of family, pain, and learning to navigate a world where not all things are as they seem.

Book excerpt: The structural challenges of building 800 metres into the sky are substantial, and include several factors which do not affect low-rise construction. This book focusses on these areas specifically to provide the architectural and structural knowledge which must be taken into account in order to design tall buildings successfully. In presenting examples of steel, reinforced concrete, and composite structural systems for such buildings, it is shown that wind load has a very important effect on the architectural and structural design. The aerodynamic approach to tall buildings is considered in this context, as is earthquake induced lateral loading. Case studies of some of the world’s most iconic buildings, illustrated with full colour photographs, structural plans and axonometrics, will bring to life the design challenges which they presented to architects and structural engineers. The Empire State Building, the Burj Khalifa, Taipei 101 and the HSB Turning Torso are just a few examples of the buildings whose real-life specifications are used to explain and illustrate core design principles, and their subsequent effect on the finished structure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States has had a bitter set of experiences with insurgencies and counterinsurgency operations, but it is by no means alone in having to confront such threats and challenges. Indeed, according to Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, the greatest domestic threat to Russia's security is the ongoing insurgency in the North Caucasus. This insurgency grew out of Russia's wars in Chechnya and has gone on for several years, with no end in sight. Yet it is hardly known in the West and barely covered even by experts. In view of this insurgency's strategic importance and the fact that the U.S. military can and must learn for other contemporary wars, the Strategic Studies Institute (SSI) felt the need to bring this war to our readers' attention and shed more light upon both sides, the Islamist (and nationalist) rebels and Russia, as they wage either an insurgency or counterinsurgency campaign.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea for an international symposium on the interstellar medium was first discussed at the University of Wyoming during the summer of 1984. It was obvious that the outstanding natural beauty of the Teton mountain range in northwestern Wyoming must be matched by a meeting with the broadest appeal to the astronomical community. If the meeting was to produce a book, it must likewise be an important contribution to the astronomical literature. It was for these reasons that early in the discussions, it was decided that the University should host a "school". with the invited speakers presenting tutorials on a broad range of topics involving the interstellar medium. The symposium proceedings would then be a compilation of the written versions of these presentations. It has been nearly a decade since Lyman Spitzer published his classic text on the interstellar medium and we felt the need for a school and book that would focus on the recent developments in our understanding of the inter stellar medium. Thus, we view this two-volume set as an adjunct text to Spitzer's book.

Book excerpt: Addictively gritty, abrasively honest, and utterly compelling, Sons of Slaughter is perfect for fans of Looking for Alaska by John Green, Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut, and Challenger Deep by Neal Shusterman. It's 1994 in the small town of Clatskanie, Oregon. In a struggle to escape the grasp of his stepfather, a violent drunk, Beck stumbles upon his late grandfather's cabin abandoned in the woods. With his best friend, Dean - just released from his stay at a mental hospital after his failed suicide attempt - Beck sets out to repair it. Defiant Beck has always been a daydreamer. For years, his only escape from his stepfather's torment was a world he created for himself in his mind. But little by little the lines between the two worlds begin to blur until soon he becomes convinced that the world in which he is Beck isn't the real world at all. Quiet Dean never meant to get his girlfriend pregnant, but despite threats made by his former gang, the West Coast Howlers, he's more determined than ever to create a life for himself, Emilia, and their unborn child. Dean, usually the one who doesn't control anything, soon finds himself at the epicenter of a storm that threatens the lives of those he loves most. With explosively vivid and startlingly sharp prose, Sons of Slaughter forms a compelling narrative about the battlefield that lies both within us and around us, and what it means to fight - and bleed - for the ones we love.
