Let's Meet a Construction Worker! What do construction workers do? Some lucky kids are about to find out! They visit Mr. Moore, a construction worker who's helping to build a new school. He shows them machines that dig big holes. He explains how he follows the building plans. And he tells about different workers and how they stay safe. Hooray for construction workers! "Cartoon-style animated drawings in bright colors introduce diverse characters who will capture children's interest." —School Library Journal "In each book introducing a community-benefiting career, schoolchildren meet one adult to learn about his or her job; information includes the training required to become a firefighter, doctor, etc., daily routines, and primary responsibilities. The content is inclusive and up-to-date but delivered though vapid stories. Peppy computer-generated cartoons are amateur." - The Horn Book Guide Free downloadable series teaching guide available.

This book was released on 2010-07-12 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an exposé detailing New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg ́s education and construction policies between 2002 and 2009 inclusive. It covers all major education issues: schools chancellor, school budget, grading of the schools, reducing class sizes, small, charter and culturally themed schools, standardized testing, school safety, overcrowding and mayoral control; and all major real estate development issues: rezoning, ULURP, self-certification, various fatal construction accidents and disasters, affordable housing, lack of construction, law enforcement, and the large projects that characterized the administration. This book features a list of abbreviations and a comprehensive index in the back. A page of the Introduction, p. 11, is crucial for understanding references made throughout the book. Therefore, it is reproduced below: “Making himself available to parents. The mayor performed the important tasks of negotiating with the unions, securing funding from the higher powers and making public relations appearances when there was good news to report. I have observed that there were three recurring themes in Mr. Bloomberg ́s modus operandi in both Education and Real Estate Development: Theme 1: He was overly optimistic. As his various education initiatives and construction projects progressed, he routinely threw around and changed numbers on standardized test scores, graduation rates, school openings, school crime rates, construction costs, creation of jobs and affordable housing units, among others, and sometimes even distorted facts outright. Theme 2: Time after time, Mr. Bloomberg asked for input from the community, or purported to, on new school openings and on construction of schools and other projects, but usually ended up hiring his cronies and ignored the community ́s wishes. Theme 3: He took advantage of legal loopholes or skirted around the law to forge ahead with his agendum. His agendum was to acquire power. Why else did he take control of the schools and overturn term limits? It was not for the money. In November 2009, Mr. Bloomberg won his third-term election bid by a narrow margin, mostly because he was still viewed as a stronger candidate than the opposing one. His power and popularity were waning, however, rocked by various investigations in recent years, including a slush-fund scandal, and corruption and sloppiness in construction that led to fatal accidents that resulted in the termination of decades-long unethical practices. Further, he was accused of being involved in various conflicts of interest and of being hypocritical on environmental and health issues. Two farmyard clichés and one generic cliché also aptly describe many occurrences during the Bloomberg administration between 2002 and 2009: Cliché 1: “Just another case of the fox guarding the henhouse” Cliché 2: “Closing the barn door after the horses have already fled” Cliché 3: “Do as I say, not as I do” The above themes and clichés are so common in my text, that I refer to their generic names; i.e., I will use the blog style, for example, “File under Theme 1” or “File under Cliché 2” when providing evidence of same. Enjoy.”

Book excerpt: In A Nice Tuesday, Pat Jordan chronicles his decision to reclaim the failed potential of his youth. A young baseball pitcher of inordinate promise, Jordan had been one of the Milwaukee Braves first ?bonus babies.? His struggle through the minor leagues and ultimate failure to play in the majors, eloquently chronicled in A False Spring, defined his youth. At fifty-six, Jordan realizes that ?this trivial thing? has also defined his life and decides to make a comeback. He whips himself back into playing condition and convinces an independent minor-league team, the Waterbury (Connecticut) Spirit, to let him return to the mound one last time. In this memoir, Jordan lays bare his midlife quest with honesty and humor, making A Nice Tuesday about much more than baseball.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the same ability to make personalities and events come alive that characterizes his classic Skid Road, Murray Morgan here tells the colorful story of Tacoma, “the City of Destiny,” and southern Puget Sound, where many major events of Washington’s history took place. Drawing upon original journals and reports, Morgan builds Puget’s Sound around individuals, interweaving portraits of well-known historical figures with a raucous parade of saloonkeepers, politicians, union organizers, schemers, and swindlers. His account begins with the landing of Captain Vancouver in Puget Sound in 1792 and ends with the founding of Fort Lewis in 1916. Between are the arrival of the transcontinental railroad, the boom-and-bust of lumber mills, the anti-Chinese riots of 1885, and more distinctive Northwest history that will intrigue both new arrivals and longtime residents. With a new introduction by historian and historic preservationist Michael Sean Sullivan, this redesigned edition of Puget’s Sound brings new life to Morgan’s landmark history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Warning: If youve ever owned a dog, you should enjoy the following book. This book contains 321 cartoons which hopefully will make you smile, chuckle, and perhaps wet yourself (assuming you are older like me!) In my first book Did You Ever Wonder Thinking Outside My Box, my cartoons and their topics were fairly random sort of like stream of conscientiousness writing. This book starts out in a somewhat similar fashion but does eventually develop a couple of story lines. In the early part, youll be introduced to a number of characters but the bulk of the book will focus on Spike, Chico, and Grandpaw. Initially I considered splitting this material into two separate books but didnt think there was enough meat for both books to stand or squat separately. The last thing I wanted to do with a dog story is not have enough meat in it. If I didnt, Id have all the doggie lovers out there howling for my blood not to mention begging for more treats! Regardless, these cartoons were written with the intent of brightening your day! So take off you game face, relax, and let the sunlight enter! JAN PS Dogs like young children enjoy having stories read to them too! Please dont make them beg!

From everyday heroes to larger-than-life characters, small moments to historic events, the unforgettable stories in Reader's Digest come alive as never before in this keepsake book. Our editors have combed the archives for the narratives that thrill your senses, warm your heart, lift your spirits and leave you amazed or simply grateful for your connection with fellow humans, including: *Pilot Down: The Rescue of Scott O'Grandy--An Air Force captain policing a NATO "No Fly Zone" is struck by a missile and must use his ejection seat and parachute down into enemy territory. *The Pig That Changed My Life--The author agrees to take in what he's told is a mini pig. At first he hides the pig in his office, but his partner finds out and is upset. Nevertheless, they keep the pig and call it Esther. Esther grows up to be 650 pounds, sleeps with them along with 2 cats and 2 dogs, and wins the whole family over with her antics. The humans become vegan. *To My Daughter on Acquiring Her First Car--This is a lovely letter written by a father to his daughter as he gets her a car. It is a fond but serious plea that she not take lightly the responsibility of working this machine, that her and many others’ lives depend on her good judgement and care.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Major subsidies and regulations intended to help the poor and unemployed were changed in more than a dozen ways after 2007. Economist Casey B. Mulligan argues that many of these changes were reasonable reactions to economic events, with the intention of helping people endure the recession, but they also reduced incentives for people to work and businesses to hire. He measures the startling changes in implicit tax rates that resulted from a labyrinth of new and expanded 'social safety net' programs, and quantifies the effects of these changes on the labor market and the economy. He also reveals how borrowers can expect their earnings to affect the amount that lenders will forgive in debt renegotiation, and how this has acted as a massive implicit tax on earning. He explains how redistribution in the forms of subsidies, taxes and minimum-wage laws profoundly altered the path of the economy and made the recent recession one of the deepest and longest in decades. The Redistribution Recession is a controversial, clear-cut, and thoroughly researched analysis of the effects of various government policies on the labor market. It offers ground-breaking interpretations and precise explanations of the interplay between unemployment and financial markets."--Jacket.
