Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mycology in the Tropics: Updates on Philippine Fungi comprehensively discusses the current state of Philippine mycology, including historical developments in the field, listings of fungi with diverse utilizations or applications, and those that cause economic impact on crop production in the country. Specifically, the chapters in the book introduce tropical mycology, describe different fungal groups, their biodiversity and conservation, and give insights into the applications of mycology in agriculture, health, industry and the environment. The book also includes quarantine regulations on economically important diseases and describes the importance of developing local studies on fungi. Provides a leading reference that encapsulates the many facets of mycology in the Philippines Gives up-to-date developments on Philippine mycology, especially topics rarely discussed, such as the roles of mycological herbaria and culture collections, traditional knowledge on mushrooms, and on quarantine guidelines of crops with fungal diseases Presents an introduction to fungal species reported in aquatic and terrestrial habitats Highlights local studies on fungi in relation to diseases in human, animals and plants and summarizes key findings on their use in the industry and the environment

Book Synopsis Fungi in vegetation science by : W. Winterhoff
Download or read book Fungi in vegetation science written by W. Winterhoff and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Readers will perhaps be surprised to find a volume about fungi within a handbook of vegetation science. Although fungi traditionally feature in textbooks on botany, at least since Whittaker (1969), they have mostly been categorised as an independent kingdom of organisms or, in contrast to the animal and plant kingdom, as probionta together with algae and protozoa. More relevant for ecology than the systematic separation of fungi from plants is the different lifestyle of fungi which, in contrast to most plants, live as parasites, saprophytes or in symbiosis. Theoretical factors aside, there are also practical methodological considerations which favour the distinction between fungal and plant communities, as has been shown for example by Dörfelt (1974). Despite their special position the coenology of fungi has been dealt with in the handbook of vegetation science. It would be wrong to conclude that we underestimate the important differences between fungal and plant communities. The reasons for including the former are that mycocoenology developed from phytocoenology, the similarity of the methods and concepts still employed today and the close correlation between fungi and plants in biocoenoses.

Book Synopsis Biological Diversity and Genetic Resources by : Biological Diversity & Genetic Resources Project
Download or read book Biological Diversity and Genetic Resources written by Biological Diversity & Genetic Resources Project and published by Commonwealth Secretariat. This book was released on 1992 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conservation of biodiversity and the sustainable use of genetic resources have been priority issues for a number of countries and international organisations over the past decade. We have begun to realise that the rapid rate of development at all costs has generated forces that are threatening to destroy the very substratum of life on Earth.Biological diversity is the building block of the myriad life forms on our planet and our defence against global climate changes. Wider acceptance of this truth has given an impetus to the need for further work at political and scientific levels. However, little information is available on how to study, use and conserve our biological and genetic resources. The Commonwealth Science Council's programme on biological diversity and genetic resources attempts to redress this imbalance. Launched in 1986, this programme recognises that good policies for conservation of our genetic resources require not only public investment by a systematic approach for institutionalising the key process of such conservation. The programme supports the development of appropriate courses, documents and training materials for capacity building at the local level. This book discusses the programme and aims to contribute significantly towards establishing relevant mechanisms and developing practical action plans for conserving and sustainably using our rapidly vanishing biological diversity.
