Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dictation Spelling Book, Vol. 1 This book is the result of a plan successfully worked out in the class-room by the compilers, and is therefore the direct outcome of practical experience. The chief object of the dictations is the teaching of correct spelling, but there are other distinct and definite aims. The two books constituting the series are in tended to cover the spelling work of four or five years, beginning with the fourth year. The first few dictations present little difficulty except that of paragraph form; but as the work advances, beside words which already form part of the child's speaking vocabulary, and are therefore valuable only as words to be correctly spelled, each selec tion also presents certain entirely new words with which the child has no acquaintance, and which are valuable not only as spelling material, but also as they serve to enrich his vocabulary. In teaching such words, it seems most essential that they be presented in their proper relation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Appleton's Standard Speller There are two steps before writing and composition; namely, pronunciation and spelling. The Speller works from the first step toward the third. Therefore, Phonic Drill begins in the First Year and is carried through the Fourth; and syllabication and accent begin in the Third and continue to the end of the book, being delayed so much only because the pupil should first recognize the written words as wholes. It is suggested that the teacher supplement the Phonic Drills by calling attention to some general rules of pronunciation; for example, to the short vowel before a doubled consonant, to the long vowel before a single consonant followed by e, and to the frequency of hard 9 and hard 0 before a and o and of soft g and soft 0 before 6 and i. In the step from pronunciation to spelling, Word Building is a help; and exercises in Word Building occur in the Second, Third, and Fourth Years. The sentences, introduced as much to practice readiness and ease in spelling as to illustrate the meanings of words, are not always limited to the word list immediately preceding, but often give opportunity for test and review. As helpful to the work in Dictation, the uses of the simpler marks of punctuation have been explained and illustrated. At the close of the work in Punctuation, there begins, in the Fifth Year, the systematic drill in Etymology, which is treated simply, with abundant explanation, illustration, and practice work. And as a last step toward that careful composition work for which the book is preparing is a list of Synonyms, defined. In the section for Advanced Grades, the apportionment of the material in lessons has been left to the teacher, who can best suit the work to the time and deficiencies of the particular class. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Word and Sentence Book a Graded Course in Spelling, Vol. 1 Spelling has an important place as a language exercise, and ability to use the pen in taking sentences from dictation is an efficient aid to composition. Writing sentences from dictation compels attention to details besides spelling. The correct use of capitals and punctuation marks, the division of words into syllables, and the selection of words which have homonyms cannot be overlooked. If proficiency in these could be attained, the instruction in composition would be relieved of many difficulties. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mastery of Words a Course in Spelling Arranged for Grades One to Five Inclusive, Vol. 1: A Series of Lessons The Mastery of Words provides a course in Spelling for all grades. Book One is intended for the first five grades; Book Two is arranged for Grades Six, Seven, and Eight. Books One and Two are combined in a complete edition, to which this pref ace relates. Children do not learn to spell through merely repeating in order the letters which make up words. Some children misspell because their pronunciation is slovenly. They do not hear the correct sound of the word. They must learn to hear truly. Others misspell because they do not clearly visualize the form of the word. They must be taught to give energetic attention to the printed form to see clearly. But even then children fail to spell correctly if they are completely ignorant of the pho netic value of the letters which make up the word. There is no remedy for such failures except constant attention to the sounds of letters in words. The Mastery of Words develops these powers. It provides for constant repetition of the ordinary phonograms which are regular in the majority of words. It secures clear enunciation, thus helping to overcome bad habits in speaking. It teaches the pupil to analyze words so that he is conscious of the real problem to be grappled with in spelling; and all the way along it provides exercises which prepare for the use of the dictionary. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Second Book of Words and Dictation Exercises, or Advanced Lessons in Spelling Whenever a new book on any subject is presented to the public, every interested reader properly expects good and sufficient reasons to be assigned, and the authors of these spellers desire to place before the teachers of the country their reasons for the issuing of this Graded Series. It is a reproach to our schools that poor results in spelling are the rule, notwithstanding the fact that a large share of the school-day is devoted to the subject; and this being the case, it is natural that interested teachers should attempt to find a remedy, sparing no means to economize precious time in every subject of school study. We believe that the poor results in spelling are not due to indifference on the part of the pupils or the teachers, but rather to the manner in which the spelling books of the day have been planned and arranged. In this connection it may. Be proper to state that the authorship of these many spelling books is to be ascribed to teachers not actually engaged in the teaching of spelling.
