Book excerpt: Flow of two immiscible, incompressible fluids in a porous medium is typically described by a nonlinear advection-diffusion equation for one of the fluid saturations. The diffusion coefficient, which represents the effect of capillary forces on the fluids, is zero when the medium is locally saturated by either fluid since in these limiting cases the effects of capillary forces tend to zero. This degeneracy in the second-order term usually gives rise to the qualitative property that perturbations in saturation propagate with finite speed through regions that are fully saturated by either fluid. This qualitative property is physically realistic. In this work we show that, under certain choices of constitutive relations and modeling approximations, the finite speed of propagation property is lost, despite the fact that the diffusion coefficient is degenerate. The loss of finite speed of propagation is due to unbounded derivatives in the closure relations as the medium becomes saturated by wetting phase. We present analytical and numerical solutions, compare solution dynamics that display finite and infinite speed of propagation, and provide a brief account of numerical difficulties related to the degenerate coefficients.

Download or read book Upscaling Multiphase Flow in Porous Media written by D.B. Das and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-12-05 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides concise, up-to-date and easy-to-follow information on certain aspects of an ever important research area: multiphase flow in porous media. This flow type is of great significance in many petroleum and environmental engineering problems, such as in secondary and tertiary oil recovery, subsurface remediation and CO2 sequestration. This book contains a collection of selected papers (all refereed) from a number of well-known experts on multiphase flow. The papers describe both recent and state-of-the-art modeling and experimental techniques for study of multiphase flow phenomena in porous media. Specifically, the book analyses three advanced topics: upscaling, pore-scale modeling, and dynamic effects in multiphase flow in porous media. This will be an invaluable reference for the development of new theories and computer-based modeling techniques for solving realistic multiphase flow problems. Part of this book has already been published in a journal. Audience This book will be of interest to academics, researchers and consultants working in the area of flow in porous media.

Download or read book Multiphase Flow in Porous Media written by P.M. Adler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of multiphase flow through porous media is undergoing intense development, mostly due to the recent introduction of new methods. After the profound changes induced by percolation in the eighties, attention is nowadays focused on the pore scale. The physical situation is complex and only recently have tools become available that allow significant progress to be made in the area. This volume on Multiphase Flow in Porous Media, which is also being published as a special issue of the journal Transport in Porous Media, contains contributions on the lattice-Boltzmann technique, the renormalization technique, and semi-phenomenological studies at the pore level. Attention is mostly focused on two- and three-phase flows. These techniques are of tremendous importance for the numerous applications of multiphase flows in oil fields, unsaturated soils, the chemical industry, and environmental sciences.

Book Synopsis Propagation of Sound in Porous Media by : J.F. Allard
Download or read book Propagation of Sound in Porous Media written by J.F. Allard and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has grown out of the research activities of the author in the fields of sound propagation in porous media and modelling of acoustic materials. It is assumed that the reader has a background of advanced calculus, including an introduction to differential equations, complex variables and matrix algebra. A prior exposure to theory of elasticity would be advantageous. Chapters 1-3 deal with sound propagation of plane waves in solids and fluids, and the topics of acoustic impedance and reflection coefficient are given a large emphasis. The topic of flow resistivity is presented in Chapter 2. Chapter 4 deals with sound propagation in porous materials having cylindrical pores. The topics of effective density, and of tortuosity, are presented. The thermal exchanges between the frame and the fluid, and the behaviour of the bulk modulus of the fluid, are described in this simple context. Chapter 5 is concerned with sound propagation in other porous materials, and the recent notions of characteristic dimensions, which describe thermal exchanges and the viscous forces at high frequencies, are introduced. In Chapter 6, the case of porous media having an elastic frame is considered in the context of Biot theory, where new topics described in Chapter 5 have been included.

Book Synopsis Two Phase Flow in Porous Media and the Concept of Relative Permeabilities by :
Download or read book Two Phase Flow in Porous Media and the Concept of Relative Permeabilities written by and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New equations for the two phase flow of water and steam are presented. The new equations coincide with those already in use for the case of horizontal flow but are different from those for vertical flow. It is shown that the usual equations can only be valid when the two phases are flowing in separate channels, where the channel dimensions are large compared with the grain size of the porous media, and in such a case the relative permeabilities should vary only slightly with the saturation ratio. It is shown that the actual variation of relative permeabilities with saturation ratio suggests a flow model where the flow channel dimensions are of the same order of magnitude as the grain size. On this basis a new set of equations is proposed, which with the associated flow model explain relative permeabilities qualitatively. In addition they show that water can flow upwards in two phase flow where the pressure gradient is less than hydrostatic. In a simple two phase flow test it is demonstrated that this happens as predicted by the new equation set.
