Book Synopsis Aphasia and Its Therapy by : Anna Basso
Download or read book Aphasia and Its Therapy written by Anna Basso and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2003-01-09 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first single-authored book to attempt to bridge the gap between aphasia research and the rehabilitation of patients with this language disorder. Studies of the deficits underlying aphasia and the practice of aphasia rehabilitation have often diverged, and the relationship between theory and practice in aphasiology is loose. The goal of this book is to help close this gap by making explicit the relationship between what is to be rehabilitated and how to rehabilitate it.Early chapters cover the history of aphasia and its therapy from Broca's discoveries to the 1970s, and provide a description of the classic aphasia syndromes. The middle section describes the contribution of cognitive neuropsychology and the treatment models it has inspired. It includes discussion of the relationship between the treatment approach and the functional model upon which it is based. The final chapters deal with aphasia therapy. After providing a sketch of a working theory of aphasia, Basso describes intervention procedures for disorders resulting from damage at the lexical and sentence levels as well as a more general conversation-based intervention for severe aphasics.Anna Basso has run an aphasia rehabilitation unit for more than thirty years. In this book she draws on her considerable experience to provide researchers, clinicians, and their students and trainees in speech-language pathology and therapy, aphasiology, and neuropsychology with comprehensive coverage of the evolution and state of the art of aphasia research and therapy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Challenging Aphasia Therapies presents an entirely new approach to thinking on the subject of aphasia therapy by liberating it from traditional models. This is achieved through a process of reflection in which many assumptions previously taken for granted are challenged and reassessed. Internationally renowned experts successfully demonstrate the benefits of learning about aphasia therapy through the process of engaging in it. Topics covered include: * the role of context, culture and conversation in shaping and directing aphasia therapy * the ethical issues that arise from the current tensions between market driven health care industries and the moral commitment to their client welfare * the value of therapy. Contributors challenge the common notion of successful therapy as solely performance related. * the potential and competent use of humour in aphasia therapy. The identification of the strengths and limitations of clinical models and the focus on relevant directions for therapy will be of interest to practising clinicians as well as anyone involved in study or research in speech and language therapy.

Book excerpt: Written in the best-selling format of the WALC series, these activities have: easy-to-read format simple, concise language application to a wide range of acquired language disorders consistent progression of complexity within and between tasks Activities are organized by five skill areas: Matching and Identification Tasks begin simply, with single, more concrete items and progress to more complex tasks. The tasks are receptive. Clients match shapes, letters of the alphabet, and words. Then, they match written words, phrases, and sentences to pictures. Following Commands Clients follow oral and written directions requiring comprehension of body parts, objects, prepositions (e.g., over, out), and adjectives (e.g., heaviest, shortest). Vocabulary These activities target deficits in comprehension and expression. Clients choose words and supply words to complete word pairs, familiar phrases, and synonyms. Other tasks include matching words to simple definitions and clues; naming items by word class; and supplying item functions and descriptions. Answering Questions The client either listens to, or reads a sentence, and answers simple wh- questions. The questions require one-, two-, and three-word responses. Yes/no questions about object functions progress from simple (e.g., Do boats float?) to more complex and abstract (e.g., Is a road wider than a sidewalk?). Comparison, before/after, and simple reasoning questions round out the activities. Functional Language These activities build on the previous units by increasing the complexity and content level. Questions may have more than one right answer or require expression of opinions. Tasks include cloze phrase and sentence completion, open sentence completion, paragraph comprehension, paragraph fill-in-the-blanks, predicting from a short story, and formulating short stories. 222 pages, answer key
