Book Synopsis Effect of Spectral Shift and Compression-Expansion on Speech Perception by : Ganesh Attigodu Chandrashekar
Download or read book Effect of Spectral Shift and Compression-Expansion on Speech Perception written by Ganesh Attigodu Chandrashekar and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-08 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on amplitude, temporal and spectral cues in speech show that speech recognition is only mildly affected when there in distortions in amplitude or temporal domains. But speech recognition is highly dependent on spectral cues. The present study aimed to find out the combined effects of the two spectral distortions, shift and compression-expansion, on speech recognition. Results from the present study reveal that speech recognition is affected when spectral distortions were present. Information from the present study on speech recognition in spectrally shifted and compressed-expanded conditions will helps in understanding the sensitivity of speech recognition to spectral manipulations. This will ultimately improve the fitting of an implant speech processor during cochlear implant.
Book Synopsis Auditory Spectral Processing by : Manuel S. Malmierca
Download or read book Auditory Spectral Processing written by Manuel S. Malmierca and published by Gulf Professional Publishing. This book was released on 2005-11-23 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All natural auditory signals, including human speech and animal communication signals, are spectrally and temporally complex, that is, they contain multiple frequencies and their frequency composition, or spectrum, varies over time. The ability of hearers to identify and localize these signals depends on analysis of their spectral composition. For the overwhelming majority of human listeners spoken language is the major means of social communication, and this communication therefore depends on spectral analysis. Spectral analysis begins in the cochlea, but is then elaborated at various stages along the auditory pathways in the brain that lead from the cochlea to the cerebral cortex. The broad purpose of Auditory Spectral Processing is to provide a comprehensive account of the way in which spectral information is processed in the brain and the way in which this information is used by listeners to identify and localize sounds. Examines spectral processing mechanisms at different levels along the auditory neuraxis, from the cochlear nucleus to the cortex Reviews in detail psychophysical and neurophysiological evidence on the way in which spectral information is processed within and across frequency channels Presents information on the nature of the spectral information required for speech and music perception Examines a series of issues that relate to the role of spectral analysis in higher order/cognitive aspects of hearing and in clinical and applied contexts

Book Synopsis Listening to Speech by : Steven Greenberg
Download or read book Listening to Speech written by Steven Greenberg and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The human species is largely defined by its use of spoken language, so integral is speech communication to behavior and social interaction. Despite its importance in everyday life, comparatively little is known about the auditory mechanisms that underlie the ability to understand language. The current volume examines the perception and processing of speech from the perspective of the hearing system. The chapters in this book describe a comprehensive set of approaches to the scientific study of speech and hearing, ranging from anatomy and physiology, to psychophysics and perception, and computational modeling. The auditory basis of speech is examined within a biological and an evolutionary context, and its relevance to applied domains such as communication disorders and speech technology discussed in detail. This volume will be of interest to scientists, engineers, and clinicians whose professional work pertains to any aspect of spoken language or hearing science.

Book Synopsis Auditory Prostheses by : Fan-Gang Zeng
Download or read book Auditory Prostheses written by Fan-Gang Zeng and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-09-15 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cochlear implants are currently the standard treatment for profound sensorineural hearing loss. In the last decade, advances in auditory science and technology have not only greatly expanded the utility of electric stimulation to other parts of the auditory nervous system in addition to the cochlea, but have also demonstrated drastic changes in the brain in responses to electric stimulation, including changes in language development and music perception. Volume 20 of SHAR focused on basic science and technology underlying the cochlear implant. However, due to the newness of the ideas and technology, the volume did not cover any emerging applications such as bilateral cochlear implants, combined acoustic-electric stimulation, and other types of auditory prostheses, nor did it review brain plasticity in responses to electric stimulation and its perceptual and language consequences. This proposed volume takes off from Volume 20, and expands the examination of implants into new and highly exciting areas. This edited book starts with an overview and introduction by Dr. Fan-Gang Zeng. Chapters 2-9 cover technological development and the advances in treating the full spectrum of ear disorders in the last ten years. Chapters 10-15 discuss brain responses to electric stimulation and their perceptual impact. This volume is particularly exciting because there have been quantum leap from the traditional technology discussed in Volume 20. Thus, this volume is timely and will be of real importance to the SHAR audience.

Book Synopsis Cochlear Implant Research Updates by : Cila Umat
Download or read book Cochlear Implant Research Updates written by Cila Umat and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2012-04-27 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many years or decades, cochlear implants have been an exciting research area covering multiple disciplines which include surgery, engineering, audiology, speech language pathology, education and psychology, among others. Through these research studies, we have started to learn or have better understanding on various aspects of cochlear implant surgery and what follows after the surgery, the implant technology and other related aspects of cochlear implantation. Some are much better than the others but nevertheless, many are yet to be learnt. This book is intended to fill up some gaps in cochlear implant research studies. The compilation of the studies cover a fairly wide range of topics including surgical issues, some basic auditory research, and work to improve the speech or sound processing strategies, some ethical issues in language development and cochlear implantation in cases with auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder. The book is meant for postgraduate students, researchers and clinicians in the field to get some updates in their respective areas.
