Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The appearance attributes of aluminum surfaces are measured using integrating sphere instruments commercially available. Total (TR) and diffuse reflectance (DR) values are obtained on the instrument. The specular reflectance (SR) is the difference: SR=TR-DR The term, "specularity" or "specular reflectance factor" (SRF), is calculated: SRF=100[SRTR] and is a numerical value of the visual "brightness" or mirror qualities of the surface. Examples of various appearance properties are given to illustrate the practical application of the method.

Book excerpt: 1.1 This method provides values for four independently variable surface characteristics that can be used to describe precisely the appearance of rolled aluminum surfaces. This method is applicable to finishes ranging from mill sheet to luster sheet, from utility foil to decorative foil, as well as bright anodized surfaces. 1.2 Color is not included as an appearance characteristic, nor are random surface defects identified using this method.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reflectance measurements were made at different azimuth and colatitude angles relative to flat samples of the aluminum and white epoxy paint surfaces used on the Explorer Ix satellite by means of an adapted monoplanar goniophotometer. Contour charts of the reflectance from these samples were obtained from the results of these measurements. Reflectance relative to mutually perpendicular axes was obtained by graphical integration of the contour charts. The vectorial summation of the reflectance was thus obtained. The aluminum sample was found to be essentially a specular reflector and the white epoxy paint sample was found to be essentially a diffuse reflector.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An integrating sphere technique was used for the measurement of the total and specular reflectance of vacuum-evaporated aluminum films. The appearance of the surface to the naked eye was relatively insensitive to the total reflectance, but was very closely related to the fraction of reflected light that was specularly reflected. Milky or cloudy-appearing aluminum films had a low specular reflectance while mirror-like films had a high specular reflectance. Surface specular reflectance was in turn closely related to film microtopography; roughening features such as hillocks substantially reduced film shininess and hence specular reflectance. Although no extensive study to relate reflectance to deposition parameters was undertaken, specular reflectance was found to be very sensitive to chamber pressure during evaporation. Two alternate techniques for surface appearance measurements were evaluated and correlated with the integrating sphere method; these techniques yielded relative assessments of film shininess that corresponded well with visual appearance and integrating sphere results.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition of a unique text/reference identifies the appearance attributes of objects and the methods available for measuring them, bringing together much material not previously organized for ready reference. The primary premise here is that ``object appearance'' involves not only color, but such attributes as gloss, luster, and translucency. The first part of the book, concerned with nature of appearance, draws from the fields of physiology and psychology and considers the eye-brain combination and the way it receives and interprets light signals. This is followed by a consideration of the optical properties of objects from the physical standpoint. The second part of the book deals with the numerical scales used to measure object appearance. The discussion here draws on psychophysics in describing the uses of physical techniques to give numbers having psychological significance. The third part of the book covers instruments for the measurement of the attributes of object appearance, their principles of design, and a survey of the major ones in use. The final chapter discusses specific applications of appearance measurement. Includes appendixes and a glossary.
