Book Synopsis The Practical Real-Time Enterprise by : Bernd Kuglin
Download or read book The Practical Real-Time Enterprise written by Bernd Kuglin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-02-21 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The basic idea of the real-time enterprise is to become quicker. A business which wants to become a real-time enterprise has to acquire three main abilities: - Internal and external data is integrated quickly and in real time in a well-organized company data pool, - Analyses of information in the company data pool can be obtained in real time, across function boundaries and at the touch of a button, - The number of working steps performed in batch mode is shifting dramatically in favor of immediate completion in real time. The issue of communications - or real-time communications - plays a special role here. Studies have shown that processing times sometimes double when necessary communication events are handled in batch mode in the business process and not in real time. In other words, when an activity cannot be completed and lies around for days because an urgently needed partner cannot be contacted. The necessity of acquiring these three abilities has implications for the process-related, technical and organizational aspects of a business that are dealt with in detail in this book.

Book Synopsis Pervasive Computing by : Friedemann Mattern
Download or read book Pervasive Computing written by Friedemann Mattern and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-08-02 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of Pervasive 2002, the ?rst in a series of international conferences on Pervasive Computing. The conference took place at ETH Zurich from August 26to 28, 2002. Its objective was to present, discuss, and explore the latest technical developments in the emerging ?eld of pervasive computing, as well as potential future directions. Pervasive Computing is a cross-disciplinary area that extends the appli- tion of computing to diverse usage models. It covers a broad set of research topics such as low power, integrated technologies, embedded systems, mobile - vices, wireless and mobile networking, middleware, applications, user interfaces, security, and privacy. The great amount of interest we are witnessing in Per- sive Computing is driven by relentless progress in basic information technologies such as microprocessors, memory chips, integrated sensors, storage devices, and wireless communication systems that continue to enable ever smaller, lighter, and faster systems. Such systems are also becoming a?ordable due to their high integration and mass production, paving the way for their adoption.

Book Synopsis Spectacles of Blood by : Swaralipi Nandi
Download or read book Spectacles of Blood written by Swaralipi Nandi and published by Zubaan. This book was released on 2014-03-11 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book places itself at the nexus of current issues of violence, masculinity and power in the postcolonial context and its representation in its films in challenging, normalising, or contesting these major concerns of our times. The essays address the interplay of critical and theoretical insights both from literature and social studies in analysing the films based on societal violence in postcolonial cultures: be it in the context of sophisticated terrorism, suicide bombings, the underworld, any organised crime, mob violence etc. The writers look at the the dynamics of the representation of these issues as cinematic plots and techniques. They draw attention to the affective value of the films in generating and foregrounding the questions of feelings invoked by the onscreen violence, and the impact of this emotive state on the issues of national and cosmopolitan identity formation. Together, the essays enrich both literary studies and social studies with a nuanced borrowing and intermixing of their primary texts and modes of interpretation. This new collection of essays, thus, brings together, in one volume, the interplay of critical and theoretical insights from Literature, Sociology and Media Studies. Published by Zubaan.

Book Synopsis Public Spectacles of Violence by : Rielle Navitski
Download or read book Public Spectacles of Violence written by Rielle Navitski and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2017-05-18 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Public Spectacles of Violence Rielle Navitski examines the proliferation of cinematic and photographic images of criminality, bodily injury, and technological catastrophe in early twentieth-century Mexico and Brazil, which were among Latin America’s most industrialized nations and later developed two of the region’s largest film industries. Navitski analyzes a wide range of sensational cultural forms, from nonfiction films and serial cinema to illustrated police reportage, serial literature, and fan magazines, demonstrating how media spectacles of violence helped audiences make sense of the political instability, high crime rates, and social inequality that came with modernization. In both nations, sensational cinema and journalism—influenced by imported films—forged a common public sphere that reached across the racial, class, and geographic divides accentuated by economic growth and urbanization. Highlighting the human costs of modernization, these media constructed everyday experience as decidedly modern, in that it was marked by the same social ills facing industrialized countries. The legacy of sensational early twentieth-century visual culture remains felt in Mexico and Brazil today, where public displays of violence by the military, police, and organized crime are hypervisible.

Book Synopsis Spectacles of Truth in Classical Greek Philosophy by : Andrea Wilson Nightingale
Download or read book Spectacles of Truth in Classical Greek Philosophy written by Andrea Wilson Nightingale and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-08-12 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In fourth-century Greece (BCE), the debate over the nature of philosophy generated a novel claim: that the highest form of wisdom is theoria, the rational 'vision' of metaphysical truths (the 'spectator theory of knowledge'). This 2004 book offers an original analysis of the construction of 'theoretical' philosophy in fourth-century Greece. In the effort to conceptualise and legitimise theoretical philosophy, the philosophers turned to a venerable cultural practice: theoria (state pilgrimage). In this practice, an individual journeyed abroad as an official witness of sacralized spectacles. This book examines the philosophic appropriation and transformation of theoria, and analyses the competing conceptions of theoretical wisdom in fourth-century philosophy. By tracing the link between traditional and philosophic theoria, this book locates the creation of theoretical philosophy in its historical context, analysing theoria as a cultural and an intellectual practice. It develops a new, interdisciplinary approach, drawing on philosophy, history and literary studies.
