Book excerpt: The Sixth International Conference on Time-Resolved Vibrational Spectroscopy was held from May 23 to 28, 1993 in Berlin, Germany. It continued the series of biennial conferences initiated in 1982 by Prof. George Atkinson (University of Arizona) at Lake Placid, USA, followed by conferences which were chaired by Prof. Alfred Laubereau (University of Bayreuth) and Dr. Manfred Stockburger (Max-Planck-Institut, G6ttingen) at Bayreuth-Bischofsgrtin, Germany, in 1985, by Prof. Joop D.W. Van Voorst (University of Amsterdam) at Amersfoort, The Netherlands, in 1987, Prof. Thomas G. Spiro (Princeton University) at Princeton, USA, in 1989, and by Prof. Hiroaki Takahashi (Waseda University) at Tokyo, Japan, in 1991. The Berlin conference attracted 120 participants from 19 different countries, representing the most active scientific groups of the world in this field. Since 1982 the field has benefited from the development of lasers with shorter pulses and of reliable tunable light sources in the infrared. Now, the main activities are focused on the primary photo-induced processes and their excited-state dynamics and on detailed investigations in photochemistry and photobiology. The high quality of the contributions given at this conference is reflected in this proceedings volume and will provide all scientists interested in this field with current state-of-the-art results.

Book Synopsis Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Spectroscopy by : Zhongyu Yang
Download or read book Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Spectroscopy written by Zhongyu Yang and published by American Chemical Society. This book was released on 2024-02-23 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some information in complex problems may be acquired only through electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy; examples include long-range (several nm) rigid body structural changes, protein conformational exchange on the μs order, conformational flexibility in intrinsically disordered regions of proteins, and protein structure, dynamics, and aggregation in highly heterogeneous systems. There are limited resources for first-year graduate students to learn the basis of EPR spectroscopy and receive guidance on using EPR in their research. The central purpose of this primer is to offer a concise combination of EPR basics with a broad collection of EPR applications in various research fields to bring graduate students up to speed on EPR spectroscopy. Graduate students should treat this primer as a quick overview of the background knowledge and typical literature of EPR so that their reading and self-learning can be more efficient. Different from the existing EPR review literature, this primer will focus on, from the views of first-year graduate students, what is needed to use EPR in their research, such as the general concepts in EPR, what information EPR can offer, and where to find more details about these aspects.
Book Synopsis Proceedings of the 11th International Conference on Vacuum Ultraviolet Radiation Physics by : T. Miyahara
Download or read book Proceedings of the 11th International Conference on Vacuum Ultraviolet Radiation Physics written by T. Miyahara and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These volumes contain 365 of the 505 papers presented at the VUV-11 Conference, held at Rikkyo University, Tokyo, from August 27th to September 1st 1995. The papers are divided into three sections: atomic and molecular spectroscopy, solid state spectroscopy and instrumentation and technological applications. New aspects presented were both quantitative and qualitative improvements in fluorescence spectroscopy and magnetic circular dichroism measurements. The fluorescence data are complementary to those of photoemission in a sense but they appear to open up a new method to analyze the optical excitation and relaxation processes. The application of magnetic circular dichroism has proved to be useful not only in analyzing the electronic structures of magnetic materials but also in practical applications to material engineering as found in experiments combined with photoelectron microscopy. Excellent developments in applications are only found in the field of surface photochemistry, where the technique of etching using VUV light has been appreciably refined. Although the majority of distinctive scientific features in the VUV-11 Conference have been brought about by the application of synchrotron radiation, experiments using a different type of light source appear to have progressed steadily. This is evident in the studies of plasma radiation.
Book Synopsis Applications of Picosecond Spectroscopy to Chemistry by : K.B. Eisenthal
Download or read book Applications of Picosecond Spectroscopy to Chemistry written by K.B. Eisenthal and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the development of lasers that can generate light 11 14 pulses ranging from 10- - 10- sec duration, and capable of 13 peak powers in excess of 10 watts scientists have been able to investigate the interactions of light with matter in a time and power domain not previously possible. These ultrashort laser pulses provide a powerful tool for the study of chemical phenomena at the most fundamental level. Many of the elementary processes of importance in chemistry including energy dissipa tion, molecular motions, structural and chemical changes occur on a very short time scale and thus require special approaches. Th~ use of ultrashort laser pulses to perturb and to probe systems of interest affords a direct approach to the time reso lution of very rapid chemical phenomena. It was recognition of the impact of these relatively new approaches to chemical phenomena that motivated NATO to sponsor a meeting on the applications of picosecond spectroscopy in chemistry. The primary aim of the NATO workshop was to gain some perspective on the status of the field in terms of present research activities, technological developments and if possible the difficult task of sensing future directions. The way we decided to approach these issues was to gather together the main contributors to the field, fortunately many of whom were able to attend, to present their work and to participate in what turned out to be lively discussions of the field.
Book Synopsis Mesoscopic Electron Transport by : Lydia L. Sohn
Download or read book Mesoscopic Electron Transport written by Lydia L. Sohn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ongoing developments in nanofabrication technology and the availability of novel materials have led to the emergence and evolution of new topics for mesoscopic research, including scanning-tunnelling microscopic studies of few-atom metallic clusters, discrete energy level spectroscopy, the prediction of Kondo-type physics in the transport properties of quantum dots, time dependent effects, and the properties of interacting systems, e.g. of Luttinger liquids. The overall understanding of each of these areas is still incomplete; nevertheless, with the foundations laid by studies in the more traditional systems there is no doubt that these new areas will advance mesoscopic electron transport to a new phenomenological level, both experimentally and theoretically. Mesoscopic Electron Transport highlights selected areas in the field, provides a comprehensive review of such systems, and also serves as an introduction to the new and developing areas of mesoscopic electron transport.

Book Synopsis D(X) Centres and other Metastable Defects in Semiconductors, Proceedings of the INT Symposium, Mauterndorf, Austria, 18-22 February 1991 by : W. Jantsch
Download or read book D(X) Centres and other Metastable Defects in Semiconductors, Proceedings of the INT Symposium, Mauterndorf, Austria, 18-22 February 1991 written by W. Jantsch and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-11-25 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the first reports on metastable defects in III-V and II-VI compound semiconductors appeared in the late 1960s, the number of reports on defects with metastable states has been growing at an ever increasing rate. D(X)-center and other metastability defects cause many technical problems that are exacerbated by the uncertainty and controversy surrounding the mechanisms that cause them. A lively mix of theoretical and experimental discussions, D(X)-Centres and other Metastable Defects in Semiconductors presents a timely investigation of these systems. The book discusses topics such as, the validity of negative or positive U models, as well as alternative views that challenge existing ideas. The richness and precision of experimental data now emerging in the field is chronicled as are new investigative techniques. Based on an INT symposium, this book provides a successful forum where an extraordinary variety of ideas, including new perspectives, are examined critically.
