Book Synopsis Nonlinear Laser Spectroscopy by : V. S. Letokhov
Download or read book Nonlinear Laser Spectroscopy written by V. S. Letokhov and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-04-18 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The laser as a source of coherent optical radiation has made it possible to investigate nonlinear interaction of optical radiation with atoms and mole cules. Its availability has given rise to new research fields, such as non linear optics, laser spectroscopy, laser photochemistry, that lie at the boundary between quantum electronics and physical optics, optical spectros copy and photochemistry, respectively. The use of coherent optical radiation in each of these fields has led to the discovery of qualitatively ne\~ effects and possibilities; in particular, some rather subtle effects of interaction between highly monochromatic light and atoms and molecules, in optical spec troscopy, have formed the bases for certain methods of so-called nonlinear, laser Doppler-free spectroscopy. These methods have made it possible to in 5 6 crease the resolution of spectroscopic studies from between 10 and 10 , lim 11 ited by Doppl er 1 i ne broadeni ng up, to about 10 ; at present some 1 abor atories are developing new techniques that have even higher resolution. The discovery and elaboration of the methods of nonlinear laser spectroscopy have resulted largely from contributions by scientists from many countries, in particular from the USA (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford Uni versity, National Bureau of Standards in Boulder, Harvard University, etc. ), the USSR (P. N. Levedev Institute of Physics, Institute of Semiconductor Phys ics in Novosibirsk, Institute of Spectroscopy, etc.

Book Synopsis Methods of Detecting Exoplanets by : Valerio Bozza
Download or read book Methods of Detecting Exoplanets written by Valerio Bozza and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-12 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, renowned scientists describe the various techniques used to detect and characterize extrasolar planets, or exoplanets, with a view to unveiling the “tricks of the trade” of planet detection to a wider community. The radial velocity method, transit method, microlensing method, and direct imaging method are all clearly explained, drawing attention to their advantages and limitations and highlighting the complementary roles that they can play in improving the characterization of exoplanets’ physical and orbital properties. By probing the planetary frequency at different distances and in different conditions, these techniques are helping astrophysicists to reconstruct the scenarios of planetary formation and to give robust scientific answers to questions regarding the frequency of potentially habitable worlds. Twenty years have passed since the discovery of a Jupiter-mass companion to a main sequence star other than the Sun, heralding the birth of extrasolar planetary research; this book fully conveys the exciting progress that has been achieved during the intervening period.
Book Synopsis An Introduction to Differential Manifolds by : Jacques Lafontaine
Download or read book An Introduction to Differential Manifolds written by Jacques Lafontaine and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-07-29 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an introduction to differential manifolds. It gives solid preliminaries for more advanced topics: Riemannian manifolds, differential topology, Lie theory. It presupposes little background: the reader is only expected to master basic differential calculus, and a little point-set topology. The book covers the main topics of differential geometry: manifolds, tangent space, vector fields, differential forms, Lie groups, and a few more sophisticated topics such as de Rham cohomology, degree theory and the Gauss-Bonnet theorem for surfaces. Its ambition is to give solid foundations. In particular, the introduction of “abstract” notions such as manifolds or differential forms is motivated via questions and examples from mathematics or theoretical physics. More than 150 exercises, some of them easy and classical, some others more sophisticated, will help the beginner as well as the more expert reader. Solutions are provided for most of them. The book should be of interest to various readers: undergraduate and graduate students for a first contact to differential manifolds, mathematicians from other fields and physicists who wish to acquire some feeling about this beautiful theory. The original French text Introduction aux variétés différentielles has been a best-seller in its category in France for many years. Jacques Lafontaine was successively assistant Professor at Paris Diderot University and Professor at the University of Montpellier, where he is presently emeritus. His main research interests are Riemannian and pseudo-Riemannian geometry, including some aspects of mathematical relativity. Besides his personal research articles, he was involved in several textbooks and research monographs.

Book Synopsis Earth Under Siege by : Richard P. Turco
Download or read book Earth Under Siege written by Richard P. Turco and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1997 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the author's popular course at UCLA, this unique text is the first to introduce the non-science major to a basic understanding of how the physical environment surrounding us functions, and why human activities are affecting it, while simultaneously providing sufficient supportingdetails to hold the interest of science majors. Written for undergraduates, it details the fundamental scientific concepts underlying the nature and scope of atmospheric environmental problems. Key air pollution issues are expertly addressed in terms of their local, regional, and globalimplications. In his survey of local and regional issues, the author identifies the sources and effects of major pollutants and discusses the many ways people are exposed to environmental toxins. Global environmental issues such as stratospheric ozone depletion, global climate change, and greenhousewarming are treated as well, along with the potential for "global environmental engineering." The text provides a wealth of illustrative examples and problems that test students' comprehension of the material and challenge their creative and deductive approaches to all environmental problems. Anappendix provides a helpful primer to the basic mathematics used throughout the book. Enjoyable, stimulating, and comprehensive, this text is an ideal introduction to environmental sciences for students in the earth and atmospheric sciences, geography, engineering, environmental management and law,and life sciences.

Download or read book Genmix written by D Brian Spalding and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-18 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genmix: A General Computer Program for Two-dimensional Parabolic Phenomena explains a computer program called GENMIX. The main intention of the program is to be used as a tool of instructions. The name of the program is a mixture of two considerations: its generality and its concern for mixing processes. The book aims to help the potential user to understand the physical and mathematical basis of the topic computer program. It is also the aim of the book to make the program applicable to practical problems. The book is arranged in such a way as to parallel a course of lectures and associated computer-workshop sessions wherein the student is allowed to do some elementary computations as soon as he has gained some knowledge of the method. The book contains the mathematical, physical, and computer-coding aspects of the program. Concepts such as the boundary layer, two-dimensional, and steady- flow are defined and discussed in depth. The text will be a useful tool for computer instructors and students.

Book Synopsis The Astronomical Revolution by : Alexandre Koyre
Download or read book The Astronomical Revolution written by Alexandre Koyre and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-04-15 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in English in 1973. This volume traces the development of the revolution which so drastically altered man’s view of the universe in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The "astronomical revolution" was accomplished in three stages, each linked with the work of one man. With Copernicus, the sun became the centre of the universe. With Kepler, celestial dynamics replaced the kinematics of circles and spheres used by Copernicus. With Borelli the unification of celestial and terrestrial physics was completed by abandonment of the circle in favour the straight line to infinity.
