Book excerpt: The characterization of laser-produced plasmas has required the application of spectroscopic techniques to non-standard conditions where kinetics models have not been extensively tested. The plasmas are produced by the Nova laser for the study of inertial confinement fusion, can be mm in size, and evolve on sub-nanosecond time scales. These targets typically achieve electron temperatures from 2-4 keV and electron densities of 102°-1022 cm−3. The authors have measured the electron temperature of two types of targets: bags of gas and hohlraums, Au cylinders with laser entrance holes in the flat ends. By comparing data from different targets, they examine the time-dependence of spectroscopic plasma diagnostics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atmospheric-pressure plasmas continue to attract considerable research interest due to their diverse applications, including high power lasers, opening switches, novel plasma processing applications and sputtering, EM absorbers and reflectors, remediation of gaseous pollutants, excimer lamps, and other noncoherent light sources. Atmospheric-pressure plasmas in air are of particular importance as they can be generated and maintained without vacuum enclosure and without any additional feed gases. Non-Equilibrium Air Plasmas at Atmospheric Pressure reviews recent advances and applications in the generation and maintenance of atmospheric-pressure plasmas. With contributions from leading international researchers, the coverage includes advances in atmospheric-pressure plasma source development, diagnostics and characterization, air plasma chemistry, modeling and computational techniques, and an assessment of the status and prospects of atmospheric-pressure air plasma applications. The extensive application sections make this book attractive for practitioners in many fields where technologies based on atmospheric-pressure air plasmas are emerging.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the physics of low temperature plasmas of atomic and molecular gases. Several diagnostic methods for nonequilibrium plasma are described. The relevant elementary processes governing the kinetics and transport of atomic and chemically active molecular plasmas are discussed and numerical models of plasmas aimed at systematically solving MHD-equations are also presented. Intended for use by scientists and engineers active in various fields of low-temperature plasma physics, this book is also suitable for teachers and students at pre- and postgraduate level. In chapter 1 general problems of the elementary physics of plasma are considered and the principal ideas relating to plasma properties are given. In chapter 2 the principles which form the basis of atomic and molecular spectra radiated by a plasma are briefly described. Chapter 3 reviews experimental material associated with the peculiarities of molecular excitation processes in nonequilibrium low-temperature plasma. In chapter 4 a number of problems related to the technique and methods of spectroscopy are considered. Chapter 5 presents experimental material gained from studying the peculiarities of molecular excitation spectra from low-pressure gas discharges and describes diagnostics for nonequilibrium chemically active plasma. In chapter 6 the problems of mathematical modeling of equilibrium plasma in arcs, microwave and optical discharges are analyzed. In chapter 7, a theoretical description of nonequilibrium plasma in electrical arcs, microwave and radio-frequency discharges based on two-temperature approximation of the plasma parameters is offered. Chapter 8 presents a detailed case-study on the transport and excitation of a magnetized plasma of intermediate electron density. Several diagnostic techniques and models introduced in earlier chapters are used to obtain information on plasma properties.

This book was released on 1967 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spatially resolved electron-temperature measurements have been obtained by spectroscopic methods for the case of a nonequilibrium gaseous discharge caused by the passage of direct current between two plane-parallel electrodes in a flowing, partially ionized plasma. These measurements have been made in an arc-heated argon plasma seeded with vaporized NaK, for plasma temperatures ranging from 1300 degrees K to 2100 degrees K and electron number densities ranging from 10 to the 11th power to 10 to the 13th power/cc. It was found that all of the observed measurements fit into a total of eight discharge classifications which describe the prebreakdown and postbreakdown gaseous-discharge characteristics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph presents a comprehensive description of the theoretical foundations and experimental applications of spectroscopic methods in plasma physics research. The first three chapters introduce the classical and quantum theory of radiation, with detailed descriptions of line strengths and high density effects. The next chapter describes theoretical and experimental aspects of spectral line broadening. The following five chapters are concerned with continuous spectra, level kinetics and cross sections, thermodynamic equilibrium relations, radiative energy transfer, and radiative energy losses. The book concludes with three chapters covering the basics of various applications of plasma spectroscopy to density and temperature measurements and to the determination of some other plasma properties. Over one thousand references not only guide the reader to original research covered in the chapters, but also to experimental details and instrumentation. This will be an important text and reference for all those working on plasmas in physics, optics, nuclear engineering, and chemistry, as well as astronomy, astrophysics and space physics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a comprehensive textbook designed for graduate and advanced undergraduate students. Both authors rely on more than 20 years of teaching experience in renowned Physics Engineering courses to write this book addressing the students’ needs. Kinetics and Spectroscopy of Low Temperature Plasmas derives in a full self-consistent way the electron kinetic theory used to describe low temperature plasmas created in the laboratory with an electrical discharge, and presents the main optical spectroscopic diagnostics used to characterize such plasmas. The chapters with the theoretical contents make use of a deductive approach in which the electron kinetic theory applied to plasmas with basis on the electron Boltzmann equation is derived from the basic concepts of Statistical and Plasma Physics. On the other hand, the main optical spectroscopy diagnostics used to characterize experimentally such plasmas are presented and justified from the point of view of the Atomic and Molecular Physics. Low temperature plasmas (LTP) are partially ionized gases with a broad use in many technological applications such as microelectronics, light sources, lasers, biology and medicine. LTPs lead to the production of atomic and molecular excited states, chemically reactive radicals, and activated surface sites, which are in the origin, among others, of the deposition of thin films, advanced nanotechnology products, solar cells, highly efficient combustion motors, and treatment of cancer cells.

Book excerpt: Research during this past year has emphasized studies of plasmas properties and associated diagnostics, including nonequilibrium effects in so-called thermal plasmas. The present report discusses first measurements of the radiative source strength of air for temperatures in the range between 5000 and 7500K. To our knowledge these are the first measurements of this important property in this temperature range. The results are compared with a NASA computer code. Also described is a study of quenching effects on excited states of a nonequilibrium thermal plasma. These and companion measurements show that the common assumption of local thermodynamic equilibrium in plasmas at or about atmospheric pressure can be seriously in error and that as a result the reliability of many temperature measurements in such plasmas should be questioned. Contents: Measurements of the volumetric radiative source strength of an air plasma between 5000 and 7500K; and Electronic quenching of argon excited states in a non-equilibrium plasma at atmospheric pressure.

Book excerpt: The National Bureau of Standards has embarked on a special program to unify and accelerate its research on hot gases. This work will provide data and theory presently required for the quantitative interpretation of astrophysical and geophysical observations and the measurement of properties of plasmas in the laboratory. The data, measurement techniques, and theoretical methods of analysis draw on activities in the fields on atomic and molecular physics, statistical mechanics and thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and theoretical astrophysics and geophysics. Both the Washington and Boulder laboratories of the NBS are participating. This note describes the technical objectives of the program and includes in appendices a selected list of papers published at the NBS for the period 1955-1959 and a partial list of Bureau participants.
