Information that, in turn, serves to inform theoretical models and astrophysical studies.Recent work using the GRIFFIN spectrometer at TRIUMF has uncovered novel information in two isotopes, $^{129}$Sn and $^{80}$Ge, which lie close to the two magic nuclei: $^{132}$Sn and $^{78}$Ni, respectively. The work on $^{129}$Sn observed 31 transitions and 9 excited states for the first time, populated through the $\beta$-decay of $^{129}$In. Most notably, this experiment was the first to observe the $\beta$-decay of the $(29/2^{+})$ 1911-keV isomer of $^{129}$In. The work on $^{80}$Ge searched for a previously observed $0^{+}$ state at 639-keV, just below the $2^{+}$ 659-keV excited state, through the $\beta$-decay of $^{80}$Ga. The presence of the former was proposed as evidence for low-energy shape coexistence in $^{80}$Ge, in the region around doubly-magic $^{78}$Ni, though further signatures for the presence of this state were missing. The GRIFFIN experiment was unable to observe this state, despite using a superior detector system and observing higher statistics . The nonobservation, coupled with theoretical calculations performed, led to the conclusion that this $0^{+}$ 639-keV does not exist. Furthermore, the analysis observed, for the first time, 66 excited states and 157 $\gamma$-ray transitions, which were added to the known $^{80}$Ge level scheme. The data here presented will serve to improve upon existing nuclear structure theories and will inform future applications of nuclear science to fields such as astrophysics.

Book excerpt: The post World War II era witnessed a tremendous growth in the research carried out in neutron-induced reactions and especially in neutron capture y-ray studies. This growth was stimulated by the availability of neutron sources, such as reactors and accelerators, and by the development of high resolution y-ray and conversion electron detectors. Today the combination of high flux reactors and precise instrumentation has produced spectral data of exceptional quality, as the pages of these proceedings illustrate. The world-wide community of the practioners of the art of cap ture y-ray spectroscopy has met three times in the last decade: the first international symposium on this subject was held at Studsvik, Sweden in 1969, and the second at Petten, The Netherlands in 1974. A smaller meeting, of mostly u. S. and some European parti cipation, was held at Argonne National Laboratory in 1966. A perusal of the proceedings of these meetings shows the striking ad vances in this now mature field of physics over the last dozen years. Each meeting has seen a small but perceptible increase in the number of papers presented and the number of laboratories repre sented. More importantly, each meeting has documented the increasing impact of (n,y) reasearch, not only on other areas of basic physics, but also on commercial and medical applications of this technology. A total of 29 invited papers and 97 contributed papers were presented at this symposium.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear Spectroscopy, Part A deals with the experimental and theoretical techniques involved in nuclear spectroscopy. This book discusses the interactions of charged particles with matter, gaseous ionization detectors, and particular mass attenuation coefficients. The magnetic gamma-ray spectrometers for photo or internal-conversion electrons, general characteristics of cross-section variation with energy, and measurement of fast neutron spectra are also elaborated. This text likewise covers the elastic scattering of photons by nuclei and measurement of widths of gamma-radiating levels. This publication is recommended for graduate students preparing for experimental research in nuclear spectroscopy, students who have completed graduate-level courses in quantum mechanics and nuclear physics, and specialists who wish to acquire a broader understanding of nuclear spectroscopy.

This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spontaneous fission provides a very natural production mechanism for neutron-rich nuclei. The large excesses of neutrons over protons in heavy systems near the valley of stability, coupled with the tendency for the charge-to-mass ratio to be preserved in the fission process, results in fission fragments that lie well to the neutron-rich side of stability. The excitation energy of the primary fragments produced at scission results in the evaporation of neutrons (Fig 1) to produce secondary fragments whose excitation energy is dissipated through[gamma]-ray emission. In the last few years the study of such[gamma] rays has produced a dramatic increase in the available information on the structure of neutron-rich nuclei. This renaissance in fission-fragment spectroscopy has been due primarily to the much increased resolving power of large arrays of germanium[gamma]-ray detectors such as Euroball and Gammasphere. Through the improved detection efficiency and high granularity, these arrays have made it possible to obtain reasonable rates for the detection of three coincident[gamma] rays out of the cascades of multiplicity ten that are typically produced in spontaneous fission. In addition to the determination of the energies of excited levels, developments in spectroscopic techniques have allowed for information to be deduced regarding the spins and parities[1,2] and lifetimes[3,4] of such states of extreme isospin. In this paper we present research that has been carried out using the Euroball and Eurogam arrays to detect[gamma] rays emitted from spontaneously fissioning[sup 248]Cm and[sup 252]Cf. The paper focuses on three sub-areas of current activity, namely, the measurement of yields of secondary fragment pairs, the measurement of state lifetimes at around spin 10, and recent measurements of g-factors of excited states in fission fragments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental Neutron Resonance Spectroscopy deals with the experimental technique of neutron resonance spectroscopy. Pulsed accelerator time-of-flight spectrometers and gamma rays from neutron capture in resonances are discussed. Total neutron cross section measurements are presented, along with neutron scattering and capture cross-section measurements and measurements on fissile nuclides. This book is comprised of five chapters and begins with an introduction to pulsed accelerator time-of-flight spectrometers with moderated continued neutron spectra, together with the pulsed Van De Graaff. Experimental techniques used for neutron cross section measurements, including detectors and data acquisition equipment, are then outlined. Scattering measurements and capture measurements as well as gamma-ray spectra from the capture of neutrons in resonances are considered. The final chapter focuses on the detailed and varied experiments that have been performed on the complicated fission process, together with the parameters of the resonances of the fissile nuclides. This monograph will be a useful resource for spectroscopists and physicists.

Book excerpt: Decay spectroscopy of neutron rich nuclei near doubly magic 78Ni [78-Nickel] is relevant to nuclear structure and astrophysics as well as reactor and neutrino physics. [upper case beta]-decay [betadecay] calorimetry studies are essential to reconstruct the decay strength function and is used to overcome the problems arising from the high density of states leading to nuclear Pandemonium. The Modular Total Absorption Spectrometer, currently located in HRIBF at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, collected data on 25 fission products of 238U [238- Uranium] during a run in March 2015. Analysis of the 84,̳85,̳86Br [84, 85 and 86-Bromine] data from the March 2015 run indicates a significant modification of the [upper case beta]-strength [betastrength] function when compared with previous measurements for all three nuclei, including the introduction of new high energy states not previously detected. The cases of 84,̳85,̳86Br will be discussed in concert with shell model predictions. 85Br [85-Bromine] is a singly magic N=50 nucleus. Through the study of N=49,50,51 nuclei the decay properties around a neutron shell closure governed by the interplay between core and valence nucleon excitations and Gamow-Teller decay in a 78Ni [78-Nickel] core can be understood and provide a pinpoint for the study of more exotic nuclei.

Book excerpt: We are studying the yrast structure of very neutron-rich nuclei around doubly magic 132Sn by analyzing fission product [gamma]-ray data from a 248Cm source at Eurogam II. Yrast cascades in several few-valence-particle nuclei have been identified through [gamma][gamma] cross coincidences with their complementary fission partners. Results for two-valence-particle nuclei 132Sb, 134Te, 134Sb and 134Sn provide empirical nucleon-nucleon interactions which, combined with single-particle energies already known in the one-particle nuclei, are essential for shell-model analysis in this region. Findings for the N = 82 nuclei 134Te and 135I have now been extended to the four-proton nucleus 136Xe. Results for the two-neutron nucleus 134Sn and the N = 83 isotones 134Sb, 135Te and 135I open up the spectroscopy of nuclei in the northeast quadrant above 132Sn.
