Book excerpt: En environnement spatial d'orbite basse, les matériaux de revêtement externes des engins spatiaux subissent d'importantes dégradations, notamment dues à l'action de l'oxygène atomique. Le jet pulsé d'oxygène atomique rapide, utilisé dans le simulateur, a été caractérisé par spectrométrie de masse quadripolaire. Cet appareil de mesure, dans un mode de fonctionnement adapté au caractère spécifique de l'expérience, permet l'analyse qualitative des espèces ioniques positives et neutres présentes dans le jet. La méthode d'analyse, par mesure de temps de vol, permet de déterminer les distributions temporelles et de vitesse, ainsi que les fluences des différentes espèces présentes dans le jet. Des mesures par sonde de Langmuir valident les fluences obtenues pour les ions positifs, et permettent de mettre en évidence la présence d'ions négatifs et d'électrons, ainsi que de calculer leur fluence. L'analyse des photons ultraviolets et ultraviolets lointains, à l'aide de phototubes, complète la caractérisation du jet. Dans une autre configuration, la spectrométrie de masse quadripolaire est utilisée pour caractériser qualitativement les produits de réaction résultant de l'interaction du jet d'oxygène atomique avec des matériaux. L'introduction des produits de réaction dans le spectromètre de masse nécessite la réalisation d'une optique ionique de transfert. Cette technique d'analyse mise en place permet de découpler l'action des espèces ioniques agissant en synergie avec les photons ultraviolets lointains, de celle de l'oxygène atomique. Dans une configuration expérimentale permettant d'observer uniquement l'action des espèces neutres du jet sur les matériaux, une technique d'ionisation laser par absorption multiphonique non résonnante a été mise en place. Les spectres de masse des produits de réaction obtenus avec sept différents polymères (fluorés, chlorés et soufrés) valident cet outil d'analyse. Des mesures de perte de masse, effectuées sur ces matériaux polymères, permettent de confirmer l'influence des espèces ioniques dans la dégradation des matériaux, et montrent que les spectres de masse des produits de réaction possèdent un caractère quantitatif.
