Book excerpt: Polycyclic Aromatic Compounds (PAC) are a broad class of compounds whose wide distribution in the environment results from incomplete combustion processes of fossil fuels in power generator, industrial plant and domestic heating, from car exhaust gas and from tobacco smoke. Many PACs are biologically active and in particular many of the PACs with three or more fused rings are carcinogenic. Currently there is concern of the occurrence of these pollutants at ppb (ug.kg-1) le vel. However the predicted 2 to 3% annual increase in the rate of their release into 1 the environment could lead to ppm (ug.g-) levels in the next century. The move to wards stricter control of these pollutants brings with it the need for accurate monito ring of their environmental occurrence. Reliable identification and quantification of these compounds in complex environ mental samples depends greatly on the availability of reference values for their phy sicochemical and biochemical properties. This second volume results from a close collaboration within the General Directorate for Science, Research and Development of the Commission of the European Communities between the Joint Research Centre, Ispra Establishment, the Community Bureau of Reference and expert laboratories of the Member States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the 3rd in a series of comprehensive publications devoted to the molecular spectra and environmentally important properties of polycyclic aromatic compounds which constitute one of the most interesting classes of environmental carcinogens. Since the first identification of dibenz(a,h)anthracene and later benzo(a)pyrene as chemical carcinogens in the 1930's, the number of publications devoted to this ubiquitously occurring group of compounds has increased constantly. Therefore, this reference source for the spectral, physicochemical and en vironmentaJ properties of polycyclic aromatic compounds should be a welcome addition to the previous volumes for scientists engaged in the investigation, characterisation and control of this hazardous class of pollutants. As was the case with the preceding volume, this publication is the fruit of a close collaboration within the General Directorate for SCience, Research and Development of the Commission of the European Communities between the Environment Institute of the Joint Research Centre Ispra, the Community Bureau of Reference and expert laboratories in the member states. F. Geiss Director of the Environment Institute JRC Ispra 1. Introduction Polycyclic Aromatic Compounds (PAC) are an important class of carcinogenic environmental pollutants, which occur in air, water, soils, sediments, in food and in the work area. Because many hundreds of closely related isomers are being formed and released in the environment from combustion processes of fossil fuels and other organic materials, their environmental and health con trol presents a difficult task.

Book excerpt: For scientists and engineers seeking to estimate properties of compounds, this time-saving Handbook brings together in one compact volume a vast array of property estimation methods from more than 2,700 published sources for calculating many properties of organic compounds. The property estimation techniques detailed in the Handbook have been chosen for their broad applicability and practical value. The discussion of each estimating technique includes a clear exposition of the technique, including classes of compounds for which it is applicable and critical consideration of its strengths and weaknesses, as well as many worked-out examples demonstrating the technique.

This book was released on 2013 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of the IARC Monographs provides evaluations of the carcinogenicity of bitumens and their emissions, the N-heterocyclic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons benz[a]acridine, benz[c]acridine, dibenz[a,h]acridine, dibenz[a,j]acridine, dibenz[c,h]acridine, carbazole and 7H-dibenzo[c,g]carbazole, as well as the S-hetrocyclic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons benzo[b]naphtho[2,1-d]thiophene and dibenzothiophene. Bitumens are produced by distillation of crude oil during petroleum refining, and also occur naturally. Bitumens can be divided into six broad classes, according to their physical properties and specifications required for different applications. The major use (about 80%) of bitumens is for road paving; other uses include roofing, waterproofing, sealing and painting. The term "bitumen" should not be confused with "asphalt", which refers to the mixture of bitumen (4-10% by weight), small stones, sand and filler used for road paving. Bitumens are complex mixtures that contain a large number of organic chemical compounds. Application of bitumens may generate emissions (fumes and vapours) that may contain, among volatile and non-volatile compounds, a number of known or probable carcinogens. An IARC Monographs Working Group reviewed epidemiological evidence, animal bioassays, and mechanistic and other relevant data to reach conclusions as to the carcinogenic hazard to humans of various occupations that entail exposure to bitumens and bitumen emissions, including road paving, roofing, and application of mastic asphalt, and to various heterocyclic polycyclic aromatic compounds.

Book excerpt: Presents accounts of current research in polynuclear aromatic compounds, showing examples of studies both of pure compounds and of complex, fossil fuel related mixtures. Offers a thorough knowledge of aromatic chemistry through coverage of reduction, oxidation, and thermal reactions--including applications developed for both coal and petroleum materials. Featured topics include quantum chemical structure-reactivity relationships, spatial configurations of large polynuclear hydrocarbons, cyclophanes, and desulfurization of heterocycles. Scientists studying all aspects of the chemistry of polynuclear aromatics will discover important, pertinent information in this volume.
