Book excerpt: Excerpt from Specimens of Lyric Poetry, Composed in England in the Reign of Edward the First In the present volume I have included all the lyric poetry in this manuscript, except' those which have been given in the Political Songs. They are curious as illustrating the language of the period; but some of them are obscure, onaccount of the difficult grammatical constructions and uncommon words with which they abound. I at first proposed to give a glossary; but other occupations have so far taken up my leisure, that I have preferred giving to the members of the Percy Society bare texts than nothing at all. I am also rather Opposed to the multiplication of small and imperfect separate glossaries; and I would suggest that, after the publication of a few more collections of poetry of the fourteenth cen tury, the Society should print a general glossary of the language for the use of its members. Download or read book Studies in the Harley Manuscript written by Susanna Fein and published by Medieval Institute Publications. This book was released on 2000-09-01 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies in the Harley Manuscript is the first comprehensive examination of a manuscript that is of supreme value to literary scholars of medieval English literature. In an Introduction and fifteen essays a team of scholars considers many aspects of the 140 folios of this trilingual miscellany that preserves 121 items (or 122 depending on how one counts) from which we get a strange and privileged glimpse into the rich literary heritage that existed in England prior to the flourishing of vernacular poetry in the Richardian era. As the Contents indicates, the history and composition of the manuscript are considered, as are the Anglo-Norman, English, and Latin compositions that it preserves. This is a companion volume to the three volume complete edition of Harley 2253.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Political Songs of England: From the Reign of John to That of Edward II Few historical documents are more interesting or important than the contemporary Songs in which the political partizan satirised his Opponents and stirred up the courage of his friends, or in which the people exalted over victories gained abroad against their enemies or at home against their oppressors, or la mented over evil counsels and national calamities. Yet, though a few specimens have been published from time to time in collections of miscellaneous poetry, such as those of Percy and Ritson, and have never failed to attract attention, no book specially devoted to ancient Political Songs has yet appeared.
