Book excerpt: From time to time the idea has suggested itself to some of the best authorities on the amelioration of plants, that this atavism was not due to an innate tendency, but, in many cases at least, was produced by crosses between neighboring varieties. It is especially owing to Verlot that this side of the question was brought forward. But breeders as a rule have not attached much importance to this supposition, chiefly because of the great practical difficulties attending any attempt to guard the species of the larger cultures against intermixture with other varieties. Bees and humble-bees fly from bud to bud, and carry the pollen from one sort to another, and separation by great distances would be required to avoid this source of impurity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 'Species and Varieties, Their Origin by Mutation,' Hugo de Vries offers a groundbreaking exploration of the concept of mutation and its role in the development of new species. Written in a clear and concise style, De Vries delves into the mechanisms of genetic variation and how it contributes to the diversity of life forms. Drawing on his extensive research and experiments with plant breeding, the author presents a comprehensive analysis of evolution through mutation in both plants and animals, challenging established theories of natural selection. This influential work is a key text in the study of genetics and evolutionary biology, providing valuable insights into the mechanisms of biological diversity. Hugo de Vries' meticulous approach and innovative ideas have left a lasting impact on the field of biology, shaping our understanding of the origins of species and the process of adaptation. His work continues to inspire further research and exploration into the mechanisms of genetic variation and evolutionary change. 'Species and Varieties, Their Origin by Mutation' is a must-read for anyone interested in the fascinating world of evolutionary biology and the complex processes that drive the diversity of life on Earth.

Book excerpt: Plant Cell Biology is a semester long course for undergraduates and graduate students which integrates mathematics and physics, two years of chemistry, genetics, biochemistry and evolution disciplines. Having taught this course for over ten years, the author uses his expertise to relate the background established in plant anatomy, plant physiology, plant growth and development, plant taxonomy, plant biochemistry, and plant molecular biology courses to plant cell biology. This integration attempts to break down the barrier so plant cell biology is seen as an entrée into higher science.Distinguishing this book from papers that are often used for teaching the subject which use a single plant to demonstrate the techniques of molecular biology, this book covers all aspects of plant cell biology without emphasizing any one plant, organelle, molecule, or technique. Although most examples are biased towards plants, basic similarities between all living eukaryotic cells (animal and plant) are recognized and used to best illustrate for students cell processes. - Thoroughly explains the physiological underpinnings of biological processes to bring original insight related to plants - Includes examples throughout from physics, chemistry, geology, and biology to bring understanding to plant cell development, growth, chemistry and diseases - Provides the essential tools for students to be able to evaluate and assess the mechanisms involved in cell growth, chromosome motion, membrane trafficking, and energy exchange - Companion Web site provides support for all plant cell biology courses
