Book excerpt: In 'Species and Varieties, Their Origin by Mutation,' Hugo de Vries offers a groundbreaking exploration of the concept of mutation and its role in the development of new species. Written in a clear and concise style, De Vries delves into the mechanisms of genetic variation and how it contributes to the diversity of life forms. Drawing on his extensive research and experiments with plant breeding, the author presents a comprehensive analysis of evolution through mutation in both plants and animals, challenging established theories of natural selection. This influential work is a key text in the study of genetics and evolutionary biology, providing valuable insights into the mechanisms of biological diversity. Hugo de Vries' meticulous approach and innovative ideas have left a lasting impact on the field of biology, shaping our understanding of the origins of species and the process of adaptation. His work continues to inspire further research and exploration into the mechanisms of genetic variation and evolutionary change. 'Species and Varieties, Their Origin by Mutation' is a must-read for anyone interested in the fascinating world of evolutionary biology and the complex processes that drive the diversity of life on Earth.

Book excerpt: From time to time the idea has suggested itself to some of the best authorities on the amelioration of plants, that this atavism was not due to an innate tendency, but, in many cases at least, was produced by crosses between neighboring varieties. It is especially owing to Verlot that this side of the question was brought forward. But breeders as a rule have not attached much importance to this supposition, chiefly because of the great practical difficulties attending any attempt to guard the species of the larger cultures against intermixture with other varieties. Bees and humble-bees fly from bud to bud, and carry the pollen from one sort to another, and separation by great distances would be required to avoid this source of impurity. Book excerpt: Over time the complex idea of "species" has evolved, yet its meaning is far from resolved. This comprehensive work is a fresh look at an idea central to the field of biology by tracing its history from antiquity to today. Species is a benchmark exploration and clarification of a concept fundamental to the past, present, and future of the natural sciences. In this edition, a section is added on the debate over species since the time of the New Synthesis, and brings the book up to date. A section on recent philosophical debates over species has also been added. This edition is better suited non-specialists in philosophy, so that it will be of greater use for scientists wishing to understand how the notion came to be that living organisms form species. Key Selling Features: Covers the philosophical and historical development of the concept of "species" Documents that variation was recognized by pre-Darwinian scholars Includes a section on the debates since the time of the New Synthesis Better suited to non-philosophers
