Book Synopsis Action Plan for the Conservation of the Pond Bat in Europe (myotis Dasycneme) by : Council of Europe
Download or read book Action Plan for the Conservation of the Pond Bat in Europe (myotis Dasycneme) written by Council of Europe and published by Council of Europe. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication results from a request by the Standing Committee of the Bern Convention for action plans to be drawn up for the conservation of two bat species as a contribution to the Euro-Species Programme. (The second action plan concerns the Greater Horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus Ferrumquinum)). The pond bat is considered to be one of Europe's rarer and more threatened species. Both roosts and foraging habitats are threatened. The migratory behaviour of the species makes international collaboration an essential element of its conservation management. This action plan gives detailed background to the current knowledge of the status and ecology of the pond bat and how this relates to threats to the species. Country information is included in tables at the end of the text. The plan includes detailed objectives, points for further discussion and possible mechanisms for implementation of the action plan.
Book Synopsis Handbook of Biodiversity Methods by : David Hill
Download or read book Handbook of Biodiversity Methods written by David Hill and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-08-11 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biodiversity is recognised to be of global importance, yet species and habitats continue to be under increasing pressure from human-induced influences. Environmental concerns are high on the political agenda, driving increased legislation to protect the natural environment. The starting point for much of this legislation is the requirement for a comprehensive biodiversity audit. For those needing to undertake such audits, this Handbook, first published in 2005, provides standard procedures which will enable practitioners to better monitor the condition of the biodiversity resource, resulting in improved data upon which to base future policy decisions and actions. Organised in three parts, the Handbook first addresses planning, covering method selection, experimental design, sampling strategy, and data analysis and evaluation. The second part describes survey, evaluation and monitoring methods for a broad range of habitats. Part three considers species and provides information on general methods before addressing specific methods of survey and monitoring for the major taxonomic groups.

Download or read book Wilding written by Isabella Tree and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2019-09-17 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An inspiring story about what happens when 3,500 acres of land, farmed for centuries, is left to return to the wild, and about the wilder, richer future a natural landscape can bring. For years Charlie Burrell and his wife, Isabella Tree, farmed Knepp Castle Estate and struggled to turn a profit. By 2000, with the farm facing bankruptcy, they decided to try something radical. They would restore Knepp’s 3,500 acres to the wild. Using herds of free-roaming animals to mimic the actions of the megafauna of the past, they hoped to bring nature back to their depleted land. But what would the neighbors say, in the manicured countryside of modern England where a blade of grass out of place is considered an affront? In the face of considerable opposition the couple persisted with their experiment and soon witnessed an extraordinary change. New life flooded into Knepp, now a breeding hotspot for rare and threatened species like turtle doves, peregrine falcons, and purple emperor butterflies. The fabled English nightingale sings again. At a time of looming environmental disaster, Wilding is an inspiring story of a farm, a couple, and a community transformed. Isabella Tree’s wonderful book brings together science, natural history, a fair bit of drama, and—ultimately—hope.

The police bring Judith, Suzie, and Becks in to investigate the murder as civilian advisors right from the start, so they have free rein to interview suspects and follow the evidence to their heart's content... which is perfect because Judith has no time for rules and standard procedure. But this case has the Marlow Murder Club stumped. Who would want to kill the affable mayor of Marlow? How did they even get the poison into his coffee? And is anyone else in danger? The Marlow Murder Club is about to face their most difficult case yet...
Book Synopsis Island Bats by : Theodore H. Fleming
Download or read book Island Bats written by Theodore H. Fleming and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2010-03-15 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second largest order of mammals, Chiroptera comprises more than one thousand species of bats. Because of their mobility, bats are often the only native mammals on isolated oceanic islands, where more than half of all bat species live. These island bats represent an evolutionarily distinctive and ecologically significant part of the earth’s biological diversity. Island Bats is the first book to focus solely on the evolution, ecology, and conservation of bats living in the world’s island ecosystems. Among other topics, the contributors to this volume examine how the earth’s history has affected the evolution of island bats, investigate how bat populations are affected by volcanic eruptions and hurricanes, and explore the threat of extinction from human disturbance. Geographically diverse, the volume includes studies of the islands of the Caribbean, the Western Indian Ocean, Micronesia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and New Zealand. With its wealth of information from long-term studies, Island Bats provides timely and valuable information about how this fauna has evolved and how it can be conserved.

Book Synopsis Conservation Genetics in the Neotropics by : Pedro M. Galetti Jr.
Download or read book Conservation Genetics in the Neotropics written by Pedro M. Galetti Jr. and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-08-29 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how genetics and the new technologies in genomics have been used for conservation of plants and animals in the Neotropics. It shows the new perspective for conservation genetics beyond the use of theoretical and methods in genetics at species level and presents how genetics and genomics can be used for assessing communities. Conservation genetics and genomics are presented as a helpful field of study for resolving taxonomic uncertainties and hidden biodiversity, understanding populations and extinction risk, genetic management, wildlife forensic genetics, assessing biology and molecular ecology, assessing communities, conservation genomics and the use of conservation biology and genetics in science learning, highlighting case studies in the Neotropics. Applications of conservation genetics for management or policy, decision making, planning, and implementation of conservation practice in the Neotropics are addressed across chapters. This book will interest to researchers and students in conservation genetics and biology conservation interested in the Neotropics. Stakeholders and decision makers in conservation biology may also find this book useful.

Book Synopsis Comparative Study of Bechstein's Bats in Contrasting Climates by : María Napal Fraile
Download or read book Comparative Study of Bechstein's Bats in Contrasting Climates written by María Napal Fraile and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013-01 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Myotis bechsteinii is a European forest bat species. It's considered rare and only locally abundant over its wide distribution range. Current rareness- in strong contrast to the abundance in the fossil register- and its distribution restricted to large masses of well preserved deciduous forest, suggest that Myotis bechsteinii is retreating, as a consequence of climatic factors, deforestation or both. The comparative study we conducted does not support the vision of the Mediterranean area as suboptimal for the species, but rather the opposite. Thus, the reported scarcity of this bat in the area seems to be more related to degradation and rarefaction of preferred habitats- deciduous forests- than to bioclimatic conditionings. Genetic structure also reflects the prolonged isolation of populations, related to deforestation and to low altitude mountains acting as corridors promoting connectivity. Given the slow and limited responsiveness of Myotis bechsteinii to perturbations to their habitat or populations, the present distribution- smaller than the potential habitat- may reflect the history of fragmentation and degradation of forests, even at finer spatial scales.
