Book excerpt: This special issue of GLQ celebrates the writing of queer-studies pioneer Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick (1950–2009) with a collection of essays by her close friends and colleagues. The issue includes an unpublished early essay by Sedgwick on the poet James Merrill that sheds light on both her development as a critic and the extent to which she identified as a poet in this stage of her career. Written in the late 1970s before she was known for her groundbreaking work in queer theory, Sedgwick's essay "The 1001 Seances" looks at the narrative poem "The Book of Ephraim." Using Sedgwick's relation to Merrill and to poetry more generally as their point of departure, contributors share their thoughts about Sedgwick's early career and the importance of her work for queer studies. Michael Moon, with whom she founded the influential Series Q, suggests that the essay on Merrill can be understood as an early act of engagement on Sedgwick's part with some of the most enduring of her critical and theoretical interests, such as abjected sexualities, non-Oedipal psychologies, and the analysis of virtuosic performances (including, eventually, her own) of cultural authority. Katie Kent, who was Sedgwick's student, links the essay to her later work in A Dialogue on Love, while Henry Abelove and Neil Hertz, the latter of whom was Sedgwick's teacher, offer reminiscences about her attentiveness to gay history and poetry. The issue also features an introduction written by her husband, H. A. Sedgwick, which provides background on the essay's history and Sedgwick's interest in Merrill.

Book excerpt: Snacks is a history of Canadian snack foods, of the independent producers and workers who make them, and of the consumers who can’t put them down. Janis Thiessen profiles several iconic Canadian snack food companies, including Old Dutch Potato Chips, Hawkins Cheezies, and chocolate maker Ganong. These companies have developed in distinctive ways, reflecting the unique stories of their founders and their intense connection to specific locations. These stories of salty or sweet confections also reveal a history that is at odds with popular notions of “junk food.” Through extensive oral history and archival research, Thiessen uncovers the roots of our deep loyalties to different snack foods, what it means to be an independent snack food producer, and the often-quirky ways snacks have been created and marketed. Clearly written, extensively illustrated, and lavish with detail about some of Canadians’ favorite snacks, this is a lively and entertaining look at food and labour history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previously unpublished photographs depicting the Strafvollzugslager environsPreviously unpublished letters written by convicts, which describes their hopes and yearningsUnprecedented detailed biographies of the SS guards and convicts, which include details of their post-war fatesWritten with the assistance of veterans’ families, their unselfish access to their archives has resulted in a unique publication Strafvollzugslager der SS- und Polizei: Himmler’s Wartime Institutions for the Detention of Waffen-SS and Polizei Criminals is a book that the SS Leader, Heinrich Himmler, would not have wished written. Preferring that this corner of SS history remained forever in the shadows, in unprecedented detail, this study illuminates the reasons why Waffen-SS and policemen were imprisoned in purpose-built institutions and describes the regulations governing their detention. Revealing details of their daily life, veterans’ families have contributed to this book in an effort to enumerate the lives of those tasked with the prisons operation. Tasked with ensuring the convict’s National Socialist spirit remained undamaged by their punishment, these guards provided the malfeasance elements of Himmler’s Army with a suitable SS environment. Eventually, these institutions become portals through which inmates returned to the Front and this process is examined alongside a history of the various field probation units. Here, Himmler commanded the parolees face death or serious wounding as the means to earn their full rehabilitation. Case histories are tendered throughout and describe the crimes and punishments imposed on those who brought shame on the SS.

Book excerpt: Integrating Timing Considerations to Improve Testing Practices synthesizes a wealth of theory and research on time issues in assessment into actionable advice for test development, administration, and scoring. One of the major advantages of computer-based testing is the capability to passively record test-taking metadata—including how examinees use time and how time affects testing outcomes. This has opened many questions for testing administrators. Is there a trade-off between speed and accuracy in test taking? What considerations should influence equitable decisions about extended-time accommodations? How can test administrators use timing data to balance the costs and resulting validity of tests administered at commercial testing centers? In this comprehensive volume, experts in the field discuss the impact of timing considerations, constraints, and policies on valid score interpretations; administrative accommodations, test construction, and examinees’ experiences and behaviors; and how to implement the findings into practice. These 12 chapters provide invaluable resources for testing professionals to better understand the inextricable links between effective time allocation and the purposes of high-stakes testing.
