Book excerpt: Lives from an invisible community—the migrant farmworkers of the United States The Grapes of Wrath brought national attention to the condition of California’s migrant farmworkers in the 1930s. Cesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers’ grape and lettuce boycotts captured the imagination of the United States in the 1960s and ’70s. Yet today, the stories of the more than 800,000 men, women, and children working in California’s fields—one third of the nation’s agricultural work force—are rarely heard, despite the persistence of wage theft, dangerous working conditions, and uncertain futures. This book of oral histories makes the reality of farm work visible in accounts of hardship, bravery, solidarity, and creativity in California’s fields, as real people struggle to win new opportunities for future generations. Among the narrators: Maricruz, a single mother fired from a packing plant after filing a sexual assault complaint against her supervisor. Roberto, a vineyard laborer in the scorching Coachella Valley who became an advocate for more humane working conditions after his teenage son almost died of heatstroke. Oscar, an elementary school teacher in Salinas who wants to free his students from a life in the fields, the fate that once awaited him as a child.

Book excerpt: Agricultural workers face greater threats from pesticide-related illnesses -- including acute poisonings and long-term effects such as cancer and birth defects -- than any other sector of society. Farmworkers and their children, are exposed to pesticides while working in and living near the fields. To shed light on this issue, the CA for Pesticide Reform issued a report on the problem in June 1999, presenting CA Dept. of Pesticide Regulation (DPR) data showing that from 1991 to 1996 DPR reported nearly 4,000 cases of farmworker pesticide poisoning, and concluding that the problem was even more serious. This report, in both English and Spanish, updates that 1999 report and shows that farmworkers continue to face unacceptable threats of exposure to hazardous pesticides.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the outset of World War II, California agriculture seemed to be on the cusp of change. Many Californians, reacting to the ravages of the Great Depression, called for a radical reorientation of the highly exploitative labor relations that had allowed the state to become such a productive farming frontier. But with the importation of the first braceros—“guest workers” from Mexico hired on an “emergency” basis after the United States entered the war—an even more intense struggle ensued over how agriculture would be conducted in the state. Esteemed geographer Don Mitchell argues that by delineating the need for cheap, flexible farm labor as a problem and solving it via the importation of relatively disempowered migrant workers, an alliance of growers and government actors committed the United States to an agricultural system that is, in important respects, still with us. They Saved the Crops is a theoretically rich and stylistically innovative account of grower rapaciousness, worker militancy, rampant corruption, and bureaucratic bias. Mitchell shows that growers, workers, and officials confronted a series of problems that shaped—and were shaped by—the landscape itself. For growers, the problem was finding the right kind of labor at the right price at the right time. Workers struggled for survival and attempted to win power in the face of economic exploitation and unremitting violence. Bureaucrats tried to harness political power to meet the demands of, as one put it, “the people whom we serve.” Drawing on a deep well of empirical materials from archives up and down the state, Mitchell's account promises to be the definitive book about California agriculture in the turbulent decades of the mid-twentieth century.

Tackling the often murky world of labor migration, it fills an important void in this fast-growing field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholars working for communities' rights in California's Central Valley In the Struggle tells the story of the persistent engagement of eight public scholars spanning generations of sustained endeavor, a dogged war in which workers and scholars together repeatedly took on the powerful agricultural industry, the political machines, and even the universities. The stories begin in the 1930s with Paul Taylor, a professor of economics at University of California, Berkeley, who pioneered field research and activism as he travelled through the areas marked by the Great Depression, together with his wife, photographer Dorothea Lange. Working in the heart of California's agricultural Central Valley, Taylor was the first of a succession of scholars who shared the dual commitment to research and engagement, to making problems visible and to effecting change through strategic action. Taylor and Lange intentionally wove their political engagement into their identities and work as researchers, as they conducted studies, led strikes, organized underserved communities, founded community development programs, created nonprofit institutions, and more. This book documents a tradition of politically engaged scholarship in one of the world's most dramatic contexts, full of disparities and contradictions, but also ripe with opportunities to make a difference. It covers a struggle that continues undiminished in the present.

CŽsar Ch‡vez and the farmworkersÕ struggle for justice polarized the Catholic community in CaliforniaÕs Central Valley during the 1965Ð1970 Delano Grape Strike. Because most farmworkers and landowners were Catholic, the American Catholic Church was placed in the challenging position of choosing sides in an intrafaith conflict. Twice Ch‡vez petitioned the Catholic Church for help. Finally, in 1969 the American Catholic hierarchy responded by creating the BishopsÕ Ad Hoc Committee on Farm Labor. This committee of five bishops and two priests traveled CaliforniaÕs Central Valley and mediated a settlement in the five-year conflict. Within months, a new and more difficult struggle began in CaliforniaÕs lettuce fields. This time the Catholic Church drew on its long-standing tradition of social teaching and shifted its policy from neutrality to outright support for CŽsar Ch‡vez and his union, the United Farmworkers (UFW). The BishopsÕ Committee became so instrumental in the UFWÕs success that Ch‡vez declared its intervention Òthe single most important thing that has helped us.Ó Drawing upon rich, untapped archival sources at the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Marco Prouty exposes the American Catholic hierarchyÕs internal, and often confidential, deliberations during the California farm labor crisis of the 1960s and 1970s. He traces the ChurchÕs gradual transition from reluctant mediator to outright supporter of Ch‡vez, providing an intimate view of the ChurchÕs decision-making process and Ch‡vezÕs steadfast struggle to win rights for farmworkers. This lucid, solidly researched text will be an invaluable addition to the fields of labor history, social justice, ethnic studies, and religious history.
