Book excerpt: The Russian Federation and Ukraine are major global suppliers of cereals and sunflower oil, while the Russian Federation is also a leading exporter of fertilizers and energy. Due to the devastating war in Ukraine, global prices for these commodities have reached record highs. FAO Markets and Trade Division, with the FAO Investment Centre and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, have published this study on the potential impact of the war in Ukraine on food security and agrifood trade in Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco and Tunisia. Beyond a detailed analysis of how the war in Ukraine affects these countries, the report also contains a set of key policy recommendations to help governments cope with the unfolding situation and improve food security in the medium and long term. This publication is part of the Knowledge for Investment (K4I) series managed by FAO Investment Centre.

This book was released on 2022-10-13 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lebanon currently faces one of the worst economic crises of this century. The political deadlock, the economic crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic have further intensified the country’s existing economic fragility. Based on preliminary estimates, it is expected that the total cultivated area (mainly temporary crops and crops under greenhouses) will decrease during the 2021–2022 agricultural season due to the expected further increase in prices of inputs and soaring fuel prices. Overall, farmers will tend to shift to low-cost and less water demanding crops to reduce their overall production costs. Farmgate prices for agricultural products are also on the rise with the increase in production costs due to further depreciation of the Lebanese Pound. Despite the increase in export costs, exports of fresh fruits and vegetables are projected to increase for a variety of products and countries. This study aims to identify Lebanon’s main economic and social challenges related to the agrifood sector and to recommend evidence-based strategies and priority areas for public investment to cope with the impacts of the financial crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic and the PoB explosion. It aims to update and complement the June 2021 ASR. It should be noted that this study was prepared during the period from September 2021 to February 2022 and does not cover latest developments, such as the impact of the Ukraine war on the agricultural and food security sectors in Lebanon.

Book excerpt: The Agricultural Sector Review aims to provide an up-to-date picture of the current socio-economic situation of the agricultural sector in Lebanon and to identify key challenges and evidence-based strategies for policy-making. The first part provides a detailed overview of Lebanon's agricultural and food systems, including a section focused on the governance the overall policy framework and the specific policies currently governing the sector. The second part of this study consists of an identification of the challenges and issues that are currently affecting and constraining the development of the Lebanese agricultural sector to its full potential. Once identified these challenges, the study proposes several potential strategies and recommendations that could be applied at the policy-making level to drive the improvement of the sector. Finally, we provide a discussion towards a renewed national agricultural strategy; in which we reviewed some lessons learned from previous success stories in the agricultural sector in Lebanon and compile the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of the agricultural sector.

Book excerpt: Unless action is taken now to make agriculture more sustainable, productive and resilient, climate change impacts will seriously compromise food production in countries and regions that are already highly food-insecure. The Paris Agreement, adopted in December 2015, represents a new beginning in the global effort to stabilize the climate before it is too late. It recognizes the importance of food security in the international response to climate change, as reflected by many countries prominent focus on the agriculture sector in their planned contributions to adaptation and mitigation. To help put those plans into action, this report identifies strategies, financing opportunities, and data and information needs. It also describes transformative policies and institutions that can overcome barriers to implementation. The State of Food and Agriculture is produced annually. Each edition contains an overview of the current global agricultural situation, as well as more in-depth coverage of a topical theme."

Book excerpt: The COVID-19 pandemic exposed the vulnerability of agrifood systems to shocks and stresses and led to increased global food insecurity and malnutrition. Action is needed to make agrifood systems more resilient, efficient, sustainable and inclusive. The State of Food and Agriculture 2021 presents country-level indicators of the resilience of agrifood systems. The indicators measure the robustness of primary production and food availability, as well as physical and economic access to food. They can thus help assess the capacity of national agrifood systems to absorb shocks and stresses, a key aspect of resilience. The report analyses the vulnerabilities of food supply chains and how rural households cope with risks and shocks. It discusses options to minimize trade-offs that building resilience may have with efficiency and inclusivity. The aim is to offer guidance on policies to enhance food supply chain resilience, support livelihoods in the agrifood system and, in the face of disruption, ensure sustainable access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food to all.

Book excerpt: Malnutrition -- in the form of undernutrition, micronutrient deficiencies, and overweight and obesity -- imposes unacceptably high economic and social costs on countries at all income levels. The causes of malnutrition are complex, yet all forms of malnutrition share one common feature: nutritionally inappropriate diets. The State of Food and Agriculture 2013 makes the case that healthy diets and good nutrition begin with food and agriculture.
