Book excerpt: Classical plasticity is a well established domain of mechanics and engineering, providing the basis for many engineering structural design, manufacturing processes and natural phenomena. New important characteristics are emerging in the interdisciplinary approach of micro-, meso- and macro-mechanics, and through analysis, experiments and computation. The interaction of mechanics and materials scientists is introducing tremendous changes in the two disciplines, so that the possibility of materials being processed on the microscale to achieve the desired macroscopic properties is rapidly approaching.A comprehensive overview on the latest developments in both macroplasticity and microplasticity theories, their interactions and applications in various engineering disciplines such as solid mechanics, structural analysis and geo-mechanics, materials science and technology, and metal forming and machining, is given in this volume. Case studies written by international experts focus on aspects such as the applications of plasticity in interdisciplinary and non-conventional areas. The 150 papers provide a current and useful reference source on the latest advances for both research workers and engineers in the various fields of plasticity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This inter-disciplinary book provides the latest advanced knowledge of plant effects on vegetated soil properties such as water retention capability, water permeability function, shear strength, slope hydrology, movements and failure mechanisms, and applies this knowledge to the solution of slope stability problems. It is the first book to cover in detail not only the mechanical effects of root reinforcement but more importantly the hydrological effects of plant transpiration on soil suction, soil shear strength, and water permeability. The book also offers a fundamental understanding of soil-plant-water interaction. Analytical equations are provided for predicting the combined hydrological and mechanical effects of plant roots on slope stability. A novel method is also given for simulating transpiration-induced suction in a geotechnical centrifuge. Application of this method to the study of the failure mechanisms of vegetated slopes reinforced by roots with different architectures is discussed. This book is essential reading for senior undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as researchers in civil engineering, geo-environmental engineering, plant ecology, agricultural science, hydrology and water resources. It also provides advanced knowledge for civil engineers seeking "green" engineering solutions to combat the negative impact of climate change on the long-term engineering sustainability of infrastructure slopes. Professionals other than civil engineers, such as ecologists, agriculturists, botanists, environmentalists, and hydrologists, would also find the book relevant and useful.

Book excerpt: The knowledge of ecology and epidemiology of rhizomania is particularly useful to understand the means and practices able to limit or avoid its further diffusion. Some promising methods of biological control using coexisting and non-pathogenic organisms could potentially help improve the action of the not completely effective genetic resistances. This integrated protection would be valuable, especially in the even more frequent development of resistance–breaking strains in the BNYVV, where the known types of resistance, alone or in combination, seem to have lost part of their original ability to protect the crop. Therefore, further efforts will be needed to discover new traits likely still present in the wild species of the genus Beta. The availability of large collections of germplasm stored in the International Beta gene-banks should ensure the enhanced efficiency of genetic resistance by means of conventional and marker-assisted selection methods. Some almost immune transgenic varieties seem already to be waiting for release where and when it will be possible. The introduction chapter describes briefly the sugar beet crop, the more common diseases, and the damage caused by rhizomania. The following chapters discuss biological properties of the causal virus, BNYVV, and its vector, Polymyxa betae, and their interactions with the environment and the host-plant. In particular, the great advances in research of the molecular biology of BNYVV should be noteworthy, which have been established by a wide range of the most modern methods. Recent work focused on the genetic diversity and evolution of BNYVV is moving forward our understanding of the dramatic worldwide epidemics of rhizomania. Newly developed molecular techniques also lead to practical applications, such as quantification of inoculum in ecological and epidemiological research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Third International Workshop on Hybrid Artificial Intelligence Systems (HAIS 2008) presented the most recent developments in the dynamically expanding realm of symbolic and sub-symbolic techniques aimed at the construction of highly robust and reliable problem-solving techniques. Hybrid intelligent systems have become incre- ingly popular given their capabilities to handle a broad spectrum of real-world c- plex problems which come with inherent imprecision, uncertainty and vagueness, high-dimensionality, and non stationarity. These systems provide us with the oppor- nity to exploit existing domain knowledge as well as raw data to come up with prom- ing solutions in an effective manner. Being truly multidisciplinary, the series of HAIS workshops offers a unique research forum to present and discuss the latest theoretical advances and real-world applications in this exciting research field. This volume of Lecture Notes on Artificial Intelligence (LNAI) includes accepted papers presented at HAIS 2008 held in University of Burgos, Burgos, Spain, Sept- ber 2008 The global purpose of HAIS conferences has been to form a broad and interdis- plinary forum for hybrid artificial intelligence systems and associated learning pa- digms, which are playing increasingly important roles in a large number of application areas. Since its first edition in Brazil in 2006, HAIS has become an important forum for researchers working on fundamental and theoretical aspects of hybrid artificial intel- gence systems based on the use of agents and multiagent systems, bioinformatics and bio-inspired models, fuzzy systems, artificial vision, artificial neural networks, opti- zation models and alike.
