Book excerpt: The explosion of blogs, social networking sites, wikis, video sharing sites, and other powerful digital communications platforms may be the biggest game-changer to impact business since mechanized manufacturing. In today’s Web 2.0 world, company stakeholders--including employees, customers, and investors--are empowered in ways unimaginable just a few years ago, and traditional corporate hierarchies are yesterday’s news. Rather than attempt to turn back the clock and reassert strict, top-down control over stakeholder relationships, the smartest companies worldwide are responding with bold new digital communications strategies based on transparency, authenticity, and inclusion, instead of secrecy, artificiality, and exclusion. International corporate communications guru Paul A. Argenti provides a lively, up-to-the- minute review of the Web 2.0 landscape and analyzes the increasingly central role corporate communications plays in virtually every organizational function. Argenti and coauthor Courtney Barnes advise corporate leaders on how to deploy proven strategies for using new and emerging digital platforms to Manage brand identity and company reputation Build a culture of engagement and transparency Turn stakeholders into “company evangelists” Manage internal communications across time zones and language barriers Recruit and retain the best talent Develop compelling messages based on customer and investor needs and desires Argenti and Barnes provide case studies illustrating digital communications best practices at HP, Southwest Airlines, Sony, Dell, IBM, Starbucks, HBO, FedEx, GE, and other major players. This groundbreaking book will teach you how to gain real, manageable control over your organization’s communications in today’s virtual world.

The complexity brought on by an explosion in the number of tools for communication—computers, digital media, interactive corporate television, faxes, e-mail, the Internet—fuels the need for a corporation to consider its communications as central to its strategic plans. Corporate Communications for Executives looks closely at the professional practice of corporate communication. It offers numerous perspectives on ethics, science and society, employee motivation, corporate social responsibility, internal communication, global corporate communications, and communicating corporate cultures.

Book excerpt: Offers concise, practical knowledge on modern communication systems to help students transition smoothly into the workplace and beyond This book presents the most relevant concepts and technologies of today's communication systems and presents them in a concise and intuitive manner. It covers advanced topics such as Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing (OFDM) and Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) Technology, which are enabling technologies for modern communication systems such as WiFi (including the latest enhancements) and LTE-Advanced. Following a brief introduction to the field, Digital Communication for Practicing Engineers immerses readers in the theories and technologies that engineers deal with. It starts off with Shannon Theorem and Information Theory, before moving on to basic modules of a communication system, including modulation, statistical detection, channel coding, synchronization, and equalization. The next part of the book discusses advanced topics such as OFDM and MIMO, and introduces several emerging technologies in the context of 5G cellular system radio interface. The book closes by outlining several current research areas in digital communications. In addition, this text: Breaks down the subject into self-contained lectures, which can be read individually or as a whole Focuses on the pros and cons of widely used techniques, while providing references for detailed mathematical analysis Follows the current technology trends, including advanced topics such as OFDM and MIMO Touches on content this is not usually contained in textbooks such as cyclo-stationary symbol timing recovery, adaptive self-interference canceler, and Tomlinson-Harashima precoder Includes many illustrations, homework problems, and examples Digital Communication for Practicing Engineers is an ideal guide for graduate students and professionals in digital communication looking to understand, work with, and adapt to the current and future technology.

Book excerpt: This book provides a summary of the research conducted at UCLA, Stanford University, and UCSD over the last ?ve years in the area of nonlinear dyn- ics and chaos as applied to digital communications. At ?rst blush, the term “chaotic communications” seems like an oxymoron; how could something as precise and deterministic as digital communications be chaotic? But as this book will demonstrate, the application of chaos and nonlinear dynamicstocommunicationsprovidesmanypromisingnewdirectionsinareas of coding, nonlinear optical communications, and ultra-wideband commu- cations. The eleven chapters of the book summarize many of the promising new approaches that have been developed, and point the way to new research directions in this ?eld. Digital communications techniques have been continuously developed and re?ned for the past ?fty years to the point where today they form the heart of a multi-hundred billion dollar per year industry employing hundreds of thousands of people on a worldwide basis. There is a continuing need for transmission and reception of digital signals at higher and higher data rates. There are a variety of physical limits that place an upper limit on these data rates, and so the question naturally arises: are there alternative communi- tion techniques that can overcome some of these limitations? Most digital communications today is carried out using electronic devices that are essentially “linear,” and linear system theory has been used to c- tinually re?ne their performance. In many cases, inherently nonlinear devices are linearized in order to achieve a certain level of linear system performance.

There are few manuals, and there are some that offer general and sparsely updated information about the change that new technologies imply. We find the literature isolated that can be directly useful. However, we will say that there is no single recipe for DirCom or communication consultants. Each one will offer different models according to the variables or factors that seem to them to be able to rectify the direction of a company according to his or her personal mood.

Book excerpt: Culture is one of the most important elements for explaining individuals' behaviors within the social structure. It meets the various social needs of members of a society by directing how individuals must react to various events and how to act in specific circumstances. A planned and systematic process is required for disseminating this cultural accumulation as a policy, which is produced collectively by all members within their everyday life practices. The Handbook of Research on Examining Cultural Policies Through Digital Communication provides emerging research on this aspect of cultural policy, which is formed within the framework of this systematic process in a strategic manner and can be defined as various activities of the state intended for art, human sciences, and cultural inheritance. Creating such cultural policies involves the establishment of measures and organizations required for the development of each individual, providing economic and social facilities, all of which are actions intended for directing society. Featuring coverage on a broad range of topics such as long-distance education, digital citizenship, and public diplomacy, this book is ideally designed for academicians, researchers, advanced-level students, sociologists, international and national organizations, and government officials.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book develops the concepts for the transmission of digital information sequences through analog, band limited channels, including the topics of pulse shaping, channels with amplitude and delay distortion, eye patterns, zero forcing and mean squared error equalization, and data scrambling. The text considers the effects of noise in digital communications, developing the fundamental ideas of signal space, optimum symbol-by-symbol detection, and modulation system design, with particular emphasis on maximum likelihood and maximum a posteriori detection and system performance comparisons based on energy per bit to noise ratio and average error probability. The key technique of maximum likelihood sequence estimation is also developed. Tutorial coverage provides an introduction to block and convolutional codes for error control coding, including coding and decoding methods for error detection and correction, tree and trellis representations, and Viterbi decoding. Some performance comparisons for selected codes in terms of energy per bit to noise ratio versus bit error probability are presented. This book examines joint coding and modulation methods such as constant envelope modulation and trellis coded modulation, including examples such as minimum shift keying and offset quadrature phase shift keying.
