Book excerpt: Alluvial sediments within the Galena River Watershed were severely contaminated with heavy metals by historical zinc (Zn) and lead (Pb) mining operations during the early 1800s until 1979. Since the mines closed, there have been efforts to remediate on-site mine waste. However, the effectiveness of these efforts to reduce metal concentrations in stream sediments is unknown. This study compares present-day (2017) contamination trends in the Galena River Watershed to trends reported 25 years ago. A total of 415 sediment/soil samples were collected and analyzed using X-ray florescence spectrometry to determine sediment metal concentrations. The highest concentrations of zinc measured were 23,577 ppm in the channel bed, 19,825 ppm in the channel banks, and 51,273 ppm in tailings. Zinc concentrations averaged 198 ppm within the unmined Madden Branch (n=10), 2,057 ppm within the main branch of the Galena (n=31), 9,569 ppm within the heavily mined Diggings Branch (n=11), and 26,158 ppm in tailings (n=16). Present day contamination trends show little difference compared to 25 years ago. However, stream sediments collected downstream of some large-scale remediation projects have shown significant decreases in Zn concentrations. Nevertheless, even with continued efforts to remediate contaminated sediments in the Galena River, high concentrations will probably persist far into the future.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lead and Zinc Deposits of Northwestern Illinois, Vol. 21 The Galena limestone is by far the most interesting and important mineral-bearing deposit in the State, being the principal depository of the ores of lead and zinc, the former of which has been successfully mined in the vicinity of Galena ever since the first settlement of the country by the French. These mines are Said to have been discovered by M. Le Sener, who made an exploring trip up the Mississippi in the year 1700, but no attempt was made to work the mines until a century later when Julien dubuque, a half-breed of French and Indian descent, obtained a grant of land from the Fox Indians on the west side of the Mississippi, including the present site of the city of Dubuque, and commenced the business of lead mining in 1788, which be prosecuted successfully until his death in 1810. From that time on, the business was gradually extended, and in 1823 the tide of emigration began to flow rapidly from Kentucky and some of the eastern states, toward this Eldorado of the northwest, and in the next succeeding decade, dig gings had extended over nearly the whole extent of the lead bearing rocks of this region, including also that part of the mineral region embraced in the present area of the States of Illinois and Wisconsin. Download or read book Heavy Metals written by Wim Salomons and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Heavy Metals: Problems and Solutions" is divided into three sections dealing with basic geochemical processes, remediation and case studies. The basic geochemical processes are discussed with respect to mobility in the environment and impact as well as methods to derive guidelines for heavy metals. Remediation focuses on currently available methods to treat contaminated sediments and soils. In addition, it considers the concept of geochemical engineering for remediation of large areas contaminated by metals. A number of case studies of polluted sediments and soils and their environmental impact highlight the principles discussed in the first two sections.
