Book excerpt: The Mackenzie River Delta is a major outlet to the Arctic Ocean, an important habitat for freshwater organisms, migratory birds, and mammals, and a critical economic and social resource for the Gwich'in and Inuvialuit people. The Delta is also sensitive to climate change, with an increased likelihood of more variable discharge and rising sea levels, leading to forecasts of increasing isolation of many high-elevation floodplain lakes and increasing connectivity of low-elevation lakes. While extensive and ongoing studies of the biogeochemistry of these lakes exist, lower secondary producers such as macroinvertebrates represent an overlooked element of the Mackenzie Delta ecosystem. The objective of this thesis is to identify the effects of flooding on the limnology and benthic invertebrate ecology of this climate-sensitive Arctic region. This thesis addresses this knowledge gap by examining responses of lake water chemistry (Chapter 1) and littoral benthic invertebrates (Chapter 2) to variation in peak flooding, in addition to examining patterns of metacommunity structure across lakes with differing connectivity to the river (Chapter 3). Using a five-year time series that captured recent extremes in peak flood level, I found that connection time was a dominant factor influencing lake water chemistry because of direct flooding inputs and the effects of spring flooding that carried forward through the growing season. The response of lake chemistry to differing annual peak flood levels differed according to the flooding regime of the lakes. Benthic invertebrate communities sampled over five years in the East Channel were also significantly related to connection time and several of the identified water chemistry variables, indicating that they are sensitive to alterations to flooding hydrology. Analyzing the metacommunity and functional structure of macroinvertebrate communities suggested that the hydrological diversity of lakes contributes to the regional diversity, with aquatic dispersers more limited by dispersal opportunity than aerially dispersing insects. These results suggest the promise of further study of benthic macroinvertebrates in this rapidly changing Arctic delta, the importance of considering habitat diversity for freshwater conservation, and the potential for environmental change in response to climate change in north-flowing northern freshwater systems worldwide.

Book excerpt: An understanding of the spatial and temporal diversity of benthic invertebrates is necessary to understand, manage, and protect freshwater habitats. Benthic invertebrates are important components of aquatic ecosystems and are frequently used in bioassessment and biomonitoring programs. Benthic invertebrates can also play a role in nutrient cycling in lentic environments through bioturbation activities. This dissertation uses a range of techniques and analyses to understand the arrangement of benthic invertebrate diversity in Upper Klamath Lake, Oregon, and several watersheds in northern southern California. Upper Klamath Lake (UKL) is a large, shallow, naturally eutrophic lake that has experienced declines in water quality, which has led to annual cyanobacterial blooms of Aphanizomenon flos-aquae. Benthic invertebrates can increase autochthonous nutrient cycling through benthic bioturbation activities. In order to better understand the role that benthic invertebrates play in UKL, I studied the density, taxonomic richness, and species composition of benthic invertebrate assemblages in three geographic regions (north, central, and south) and three habitats (littoral, open-water and trench) across UKL. I also characterized sediment composition and water quality at each collection site and determined which environmental variables correlated with differences in benthic invertebrate composition. This research is located in Chapters 1 and 3 of this dissertation. Like benthic invertebrates in UKL, the mayfly Baetis tricaudatus is an abundant and ecologically important organism of freshwater ecosystems. Despite its widespread distribution, B. tricaudatus cannot be consistently and accurately identified and belongs to a species group known to have cryptic species diversity. While previous studies have examined the spatial distribution of this diversity, none have studied the temporal distribution. To better understand the temporal arrangement of diversity at the cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (CO1) mitochondrial gene region, I collected B. tricaudatus specimens from 3 sites over 4 years and used haplotype networks to visualize diversity. Because my results were different than those from other studies on the same taxon, for my final chapter I analyzed Baetis rhodani group COI sequences from northern and southern California using Bayesian phylogenetic analyses and haplotype networks. This research contributes to our understanding of genetic diversity, which is an important component to biodiversity.

Book excerpt: Vernal pools are often defined as seasonal pools that typically are inundated beginning in the winter and then drying out completely in summer. Though evidence of spatial and temporal variability in the macroinvertebrate communities of vernal pools has been found in previous studies, it has not been studied extensively. The primary objective of this study was to determine the extent of variability in the macroinvertebrate communities within vernal pools closely situated in a forested landscape. An effort was made to explain this variability with respect to certain physiochemical environmental variables of the pools. Significant variability was observed in the macroinvertebrate communities within the vernal pools both spatially and temporally. Water temperature, as an indicator of seasonal changes, was strongly correlated with the observed variations. Higher species richness and diversity were observed in the pools in winter than in spring 2007. Chironomidae was the most diverse family (8 genera) occurring in these vernal pools. At the beginning of inundation, amphipods and copepods were more abundant. ß-diversity was low in both winter and spring 2007; a-diversity in winter was high and low in spring 2007.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overarching goal of this dissertation is to improve our understanding of spatial heterogeneity of water chemistry in aquatic ecosystems. Lakes and rivers are fluid ecosystems, and thus spatial variation in physical, chemical, and biological properties are strongly tied to water movements, which can both create and annihilate heterogeneity. However, spatial patterns are evident and common in inland waters indicating that processes creating heterogeneity are powerful enough to resist complete dispersion. There is much to learn about the processes that create heterogeneity and the consequences it has on many aspects of ecosystems. In Chapter 1, I assessed spatial patterns of nitrate in the Mississippi River and evaluated nitrogen cycling at multiple scales. The broad scale (~1000 km) pattern was primarily driven by the arrangement of water sources and the water residence times among river habitats. Although one river segment had notable retention, at the river-scale most of the nitrate entering the river was shunted downriver. At a finer scale (~40 km), heterogeneity was driven by water exchange between the river's main channel and lateral habitats. At both scales water residence times were too short to allow substantive processing. Thus, any nutrient mitigation strategies to reduce nitrogen loading to the Gulf of Mexico would require massive changes to the hydrology of the Mississippi River. In Chapter 2, I evaluated greenhouse gas spatial heterogeneity in a medium-sized eutrophic lake and the consequences of heterogeneity on fluxes to the atmosphere. Variation across the lake reflected the arrangement and chemistry of inflowing rivers and carbon cycling rates within the lake, leading to substantial variation in both space and time. Despite the existence of spatial heterogeneity, at the annual scale estimates from the lake center reasonably well-approximated the lake surface. However, it is unclear if this pattern is consistent among years or would apply to other lakes. Because of its elevated nutrient status, rates of metabolic processes (metabolism, methane production, etc.) were likely elevated, which may have allowed these biological drivers to shape heterogeneity. In Chapter 3, I consider drivers of heterogeneity among lakes and the structure of variation within lakes. The arrangement of river inlets, lake morphometry, and biology were all important for within lake heterogeneity. The relative scale for the physical drivers tended to be at or near the scale of the lake, while drivers of biology more frequently occurred at finer scales. We expand upon the landscape limnology framework (Soranno et al. 2010) by describing drivers of variation at scales finer than whole lake. We consider the consequences of within-lake patchiness on lake ecosystem functions. In Chapters 4 and 5, I summarize findings from this dissertation and the collaborative works pertaining to spatial patterns in aquatic ecosystems. I have had great joy working collaboratively and believe that the success of our group symbolizes our general attitude towards each other. In each of these papers, I provided substantial time, thought, and/or guidance. While our understanding of spatial heterogeneity in aquatic ecosystems has improved since this dissertation began, there is still much to learn.
