Genetically distinct walleye populations appear to have developed their own adaptation strategies to respond to their regional climatic conditions. Walleye early growth rate showed a significant latitudinal trend: the populations at low latitudes, experiencing high thermal input, had a high early growth rate (o) and a high value for k, the rate of approaching asymptotic length (Linfinity) as defined in the von Bertalanffy growth model. However, the impact of climatic conditions on walleye growth in later life, as characterized by L infinity was not significant. In Lake Erie, three walleye sub-populations (i.e. the western basin, Van Buren Bay, and Grand River) showed distinct demographic characteristics. The western basin walleye had a lower early growth rate than the eastern basin walleye. The differences in early growth rate among these walleye subpopulations were associated with the differences in thermal regimes experienced by each sub-population during the growing season. The overheated western basin provided the worst growth habitat for walleye during summer/fall. Younger fish cannot avoid these overheated conditions and thus may be exhibiting reduced growth rates because of the unsuitable growth habitat in the western basin. The survival rates of adult walleye in the eastern basin were higher than the lakewide average, but the abundance was less than one percent of the lakewide adult walleye abundance. The warmer and clearer water conditions in 1998 created more walleye habitat than in 1993. The increases in water temperature and decreases in water level that may result from climate change will have different impacts on the habitat suitable for walleye among the three basins, with the greatest effect in the western basin. A simulation study showed that density-dependent early survival and density-dependent adult growth and egg production significantly affect the dynamics of the walleye metapopulation in Lake Erie. Walleye early survival (i.e. recruitment) could be a bottleneck, setting the overall sizes of the western basin and eastern basin sub-populations. This bottleneck would be sensitive to the changes in habitat expected from climate change.

Book excerpt: Walleye (Sander vitreus) and sauger (S. canadensis) are closely related freshwater species that are ecologically and economically important throughout North America. These two species are sympatric in many areas, and are often regulated as a single entity. However, the important similarities and differences that exist between these species in the context of various management issues remain uncertain. The first chapter of my thesis addresses the effects of catch-and-release fishing that is part of angling tournaments on walleye and sauger. Catch-and-release tournaments are popular in Saskatchewan and other areas, but frequently prompt management concerns regarding fish health and mortality. Potential sub-lethal effects on movement and habitat use are particularly poorly studied. I tracked both walleye and sauger after catch-and-release using telemetry following four 2015 tournaments. My objectives were to: (1) describe post-release movements; and (2) evaluate factors that may affect postrelease behaviour. The initial movements I observed were highly variable; for example, some fish moved less than 1 km, whereas others moved long distances, the maximum recorded being 31 km. All large movements I observed were made by walleye, while the farthest a sauger moved was 2 km. Fish exited the release area (500 m) faster (2.6±1.1 days versus 3.9±1.6 - 4.4±1.7 days) and moved farther in the first 48 hours (3,712.8±4,427.9 m versus 608.1±392.1 - 1065.3±687.8 m) at one tournament compared to the other three. Stress scores were significantly lower at this tournament (3.50±0.73 versus 4.60±1.17 - 4.75±1.48), and an important negative predictor of fish movement. However, there were few common predictors of movement among tournaments. I confirmed delayed mortality of tagged fish at only one tournament, which was high (45%) and mostly due to avian predation. I conclude that walleye and sauger behaviour after tournaments varies widely, likely due to varying tournament and environmental conditions. The understanding of factors that modify fish behaviour remains limited and warrants further study. The second chapter of my thesis assesses the ecological relationship between walleye and sauger when they co-exist. Limited information is available regarding potential niche partitioning across different time scales by these sympatric congeners, though I expected niche overlap to be high during early ages and lower later in life. I used multi-tissue (liver, muscle, and bone layers) isotopic niche analysis to quantify overlap by these species in two large reservoirs in Saskatchewan. Population niche size was larger for sauger (1.73 - 3.60 ‰2) than walleye (0.51 - 2.61 ‰2) in Lake Diefenbaker, but this trend was reversed in Tobin Lake (sauger = 0.54 - 2.57 ‰2; walleye = 1.30 - 2.94 ‰2). Inter-species niche overlap at the population level also varied by site (Diefenbaker = 3- 19%, Tobin = 9-31%), and niche partitioning was evident in both systems at all time scales. The niche size of individual fish and levels of intra- and inter-specific overlap were highly variable by site. Walleye and sauger appear to use different resources but the factors influencing variation in niche size and overlap are currently unclear. My findings indicate there is considerable variation in the response of walleye and sauger to catch-and-release angling, as well as in their resource use and niche overlap. The important differences I describe between these species suggest that a re-evaluation of regulating them as one entity may be warranted.

Book excerpt: Identifying differences in movement behaviour and the variance in behavioural strategies that may exist across a single species occupying a heterogeneous landscape can provide valuable ecological and evolutionary insights; taking movement heterogeneity into account in management and conservation efforts may ultimately improve the sustainability of species with significant economic and ecological value, such as walleye (Sander vitreus). Lake Winnipeg (Manitoba, Canada) supports the second largest commercial fishery for walleye in North America. The lake is divided into two relatively separate basins connected by an intermediate channel, which differ dramatically in both abiotic and biotic features. Despite this, little is known about whether (or how) walleye move or use variable habitats throughout the lake. Historical mark-recapture models from tagged walleye revealed low but measurable rates (0.3-1.2%) of movement annually between the north and south basins of Lake Winnipeg. Contemporary estimates using acoustic telemetry data detected a greater but comparably low rate of transition between the basins annually for walleye (7-8.5%). Both historical and current models revealed that movement was more likely to occur in a south to north direction. Additionally, annual survival across both basins of the lake was higher historically (54%) then it is currently (37%). To further investigate contemporary patterns of inter-basin movement, I assessed female walleye tagged across the south. I uncovered repeatable patterns of individual fish movement, where migratory walleye consistently travelled into the north basin for a period of time, and resident walleye remained within the south basin. I found that migrants significantly increased home (95%) and core (50%) ranges during the summer and fall associated with a northern shift in latitudinal distribution. Finally, putative repeat spawning in the year following tagging appeared to be greater for migrants (65%) compared to residents (40%). This thesis describes the first formal description of walleye movement in Lake Winnipeg, and suggests connections between movement patterns (i.e., migrants and residents) to potential differences in life history (i.e., differential probability of repeat spawning). Direct movement results presented here should prove useful to fisheries management and policy for both commercial and recreational activities across the separately managed basins of Lake Winnipeg.

Recent studies have explained this variation using easily measured abiotic environmental variables. I broadly examined the effects of prey abundance and size on walleye growth potential and energy budgets using a new biphasic growth model and a linked mercury mass balance and fish bioenergetics model respectively. Among lake variation in prey abundance, though statistically significant in a subset of lakes (remaining lakes when a group of outliers with unusually low growth were removed), was not a strong predictor of variation in walleye growth potential. I detected no systematic variations in walleye growth efficiency as a function of available prey sizes. Consequently, these measures of prey size and abundance do not represent practical easily measured environmental correlates of walleye growth. A potential reason is large inter-annual variability in the prey abundance and size variables.

Sauger population abundance declined in the middle Missouri and Yellowstone rivers of Montana in the mid-1980s following a period of drought. Higher flows resulted in a rebound of the lower Yellowstone River population; however, the middle Missouri River population has remained at low abundance. Various factors may contribute to the reduced population abundance of sauger in the middle Missouri River, including interspecific competition with walleye, Sander vitreus. Historical trend data of sauger and walleye were assessed to determine long-term trends of sauger and walleye fitness. To assess competition potential, seasonal migrations, habitat use, and diets of both species were compared in the middle Missouri River. Trophic position of sauger was also compared between the middle Missouri and Yellowstone rivers to evaluate the trophic status of sauger in sympatry and allopatry with walleye. Sauger and walleye were tracked using radio telemetry to establish and compare seasonal migrations. Habitat use was compared at three hierarchical scales, diets were collected on fish sampled using electrofishing, and diet overlap was calculated. Trophic position was calculated using stable isotope analysis. Historical trend data indicated that sauger and walleye are currently at low abundance and sauger had low relative weights, which is likely due to low prey availability. Prior to the presumed spawning period, 96% of the sauger and 57% of the walleye migrated downstream as far as 273 km. After spawning, both species returned to previously-occupied river reaches and demonstrated site fidelity during the non-migratory season. Habitat use and selection by sauger and walleye were similar at all three hierarchical scales. Diet overlap was high during the spring [0.72 (SE=0.003)] and summer [0.95 (SE=0.0008)] and moderate during autumn [0.49 (SE=0.003)]. Sauger trophic position differed statistically between the middle Missouri and Yellowstone rivers; however, the biological consequences of the difference are uncertain. Overall, resource overlap of sauger and walleye in the middle Missouri River, Montana suggests that competition potential between these species is high, which may preclude the recovery of native sauger populations if resources are limiting.

Book excerpt: Many migratory animals time reproduction using environmental cues (e.g., photoperiod) that signal favorable conditions for offspring (e.g., food availability). However, environmental change can decouple these cues from the conditions relevant to offspring success. In turn, variation in reproductive behaviors may be critical to population persistence in a changing environment. For example, while natal homing can lead to valuable local adaptations in a stable environment, straying to new breeding sites can buffer against environmental change. Among exploited species, knowledge of reproductive behavior, such as spawn timing (phenology) and spawning site selection, has proven useful to fisheries management by influencing angling dynamics, estimates of biological reference points, and stock delineations. Thus, a well-developed understanding of reproductive phenology, breeding site selection, and fishery dynamics could help agencies effectively conserve and manage fisheries in ecosystems experiencing environmental change. Accordingly, my dissertation research sought to better understand the reproductive behaviors and angling dynamics of Lake Erie’s walleye population. In collaboration with other researchers and agency biologists, I used acoustic telemetry, creel surveys, environmental monitoring data, and quantitative techniques to discern the spawning behaviors and angling dynamics of this population. We assessed the timing of residency in spawning sites, focusing on how environmental cues and individual characteristics drive observed variation (Chapter 2), developed a quantitative framework to estimate the frequencies of each potential spawning site selection strategy (Chapter 3), demonstrated sex based-differences in spawning behavior and male-biased walleye harvest during the spawning season (Chapter 4), and modeled the impact of fishery characteristics and angler behaviors on recreational catch outcomes (Chapter 5). Each chapter generated new insights to the benefit of fisheries management through advances in our understanding of reproductive ecology and angling dynamics. In Chapter 2, we found that the timing of residency in spawning sites differed between sexes and among spawning locations and was controlled by photoperiod and temperature. The varying responses to warming suggest that reproductive resilience is promoted by conserving local spawning populations and a broad age structure. The findings from Chapter 3 demonstrated that, although spawning site fidelity and annual spawning are common, apparent skipped spawning also occurs (~ 14% of observations). Accounting for this potential skipped spawning led to revised biological reference points, owing to adjusted estimates of spawning stock biomass. Additionally, although few walleye strayed, the pattern of straying indicated that some stocks mix heavily. In Chapter 4, we found strong evidence for sex-specific spawning behaviors, with males occupying spawning grounds longer than females, which helped explain male-biased walleye harvest on the spawning grounds. Lastly, in Chapter 5, modeling creel survey data showed that angler decisions influenced catch outcomes more than abundance of the targeted walleye population. The findings from this chapter can help anglers maximize their probability of fishing success, given desired catch outcomes. The improved understanding of Lake Erie walleye reproductive behavior, angling dynamics, and the relationships between them, should help agencies worldwide keep their valued fish populations sustainable in the face of continued environmental change.

Book excerpt: Growth estimations and age frequencies of walleyes (Sander vitreus) were compared using scales and otoliths as the aging structures from Bull Shoals Lake, Missouri and Norfork Lake, Arkansas and Missouri. Aging structures were collected from fish sampled by electro-fishing during the spring of 2008. Each age structure was independently examined by three people without prior knowledge of the fish age, length, weight, gender, or site. Age distributions and growth models were obtained based on scale and otolith age data. Comparisons were made between distributions obtained using each aging structure and between lakes. It was found that scales consistently underestimate the age of fish from both lakes, assuming that otolith age data was accurate. The oldest fish age by scales from both lakes was 6 years, while the oldest fish age using otoliths was 11 years. Growth rates were compared to determine differences between aging structures and lake populations. Power growth models were created to compare growth between Lake Norfork and Bull Shoals Lake. It was found there were significantly different slopes and intercepts, for power growth models using scales and otoliths. Von Bertalanffy growth curves were created to compare growth rates between Lake Norfork and Bull Shoals Lake. Using otoliths as the aging structure it was found that growth rates in Bull Shoals Lake were slightly higher than Lake Norfork.

Book excerpt: The population genetic structure of three of the largest walleye spawning groups in Lake Erie is tested for consistency over time and space spanning 14 years, based on nine high-resolution nuclear DNA microsatellite loci. Previous genetic studies focused on a one-time genetic "snapshot", with an earlier study by our laboratory finding that the genetic structure of three Lake Erie spawning groups along the southern shore - Maumee River, Sandusky River, and Van Buren Bay reefs - appeared similar in 2003, whereas most other spawning groups across Lake Erie were genetically distinctive. The present study analyzes the stability of genetic similarity patterns within and among 726 walleye spawning at these three sites across years and age cohorts in 1995, 1998, 2003, 2007, and 2008. Genetic patterns are evaluated using pairwise FST analog and contingency tests, AMOVA partitioning, and Bayesian assignment tests. Results reveal overall year-to-year consistency in genetic structure of walleye spawning at the three sites, with some annual variation in the Van Buren Bay reef group. Greater genetic divergence from the other groups is detected in the Van Buren Bay spawning group, which reflects greater geographic separation. Walleye spawning in the Sandusky and Maumee Rivers are genetically distinguishable from each other when data from all years are combined, which suggests possible sample size effect (i.e., annual sample sizes likely were not large enough to detect their genetic differentiation). No significant differences occur among age cohorts, between the sexes, or among sampling dates within spawning runs. Results demonstrate the importance of sampling over several years of walleye spawning runs in order to resolve fine-scale genetic relationships within an open lake system.
