Book excerpt: Aesop's Fables, also called Aesopica, are a collection of fables attributed to Aesop, a slave and storyteller who is said to have lived between 620 and 564 BC in ancient Greece. Once upon a time, long ago in a far-off land, all things and beings not only had consciousness, but could also communicate in the same language. These stories contain distilled wisdom and can be used with great effect. They teach moral lessons, above all about love and respect, and greed and all the inner demons that constantly plague us. The allegories in the fables are sophisticated and rich. Normally, animals are the protagonists, perhaps because the depiction of human behavior, especially the contemptible kind, reflected in our animal world companions, makes it easier for us to recognize the root of evil. That is Aesop's world. The key to it lies in the observation that mutual understanding does not arise simply from all things understanding each other; no, that's where the fun begins. The fables are good reading for children. But at the same time, they are amazingly entertaining for adults. In short, they directly target human everyday experiences that everyone knows and makes every day. The book at A2 language level offers a parallel translation that allows the reader to learn the Spanish language in a shorter time. At a glance, it is immediately apparent what unknown words mean. The audio files are included and available online. With the help of QR codes, you can access an audio file in no time without having to manually type in web addresses.

This book was released on with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This illustrated book contains a collection of classic ancient tales, presented in a bilingual edition, that is perfect for those learning Spanish or English. With 137 stories and parallel translations, it provides students at any level with a chance to expand their vocabulary without needing to refer to a dictionary all the time. With this format, each Spanish sentence is accompanied by its English translation on the same page, making it easy to compare and understand. Learning with parallel text The parallel text encourages 'noticing' - the presence of the target language and the first language version on the same page facilitates 'noticing' grammar and vocabulary structures in an authentic linguistic context. Students learn vocabulary in context, the parallel text presents new lexical items without the teacher's direct involvement. This can effectively encourage reading for less confident individuals, the translation support lessens the anxiety levels of such learners and provides a solid and effective mechanism for learning a second language. Learning with fables The enduring nature of fables is enthralling, and the morals they impart can be extremely relevant in today's world. Fables are stories that teach important lessons about life. They can teach us how to be brave when things are hard, how to work well with others, how to accept people for who they are, and how to make good choices. By reading these fables, you'll not only become familiar with common language expressions, but you’ll also gain valuable worldly wisdom. 137 short stories The most familiar versions of Aesop’s fables come from those published by the Library of Congress in 1852. Most English-speaking readers know this variation of the fables. In this book, the fables have been updated with modern language, making them shorter and easier to understand for today’s readers. Likewise, the Spanish versions have been modernized. In addition to modernizing the language, some stories have been eliminated or updated to reflect our modern world. The stories in this collection are brief and can be read quickly – each fable only spans one or two pages that can be completed in a single sitting. While we believe that anyone can benefit from reading these stories, having a basic understanding of Spanish is recommended in order to fully appreciate the value of the message in both languages.

Download or read book Aesop's Fables written by John E. Keller and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1489 Johan Hurus printed the first collection of fables in Spain, Lavida del Ysopetconsusfabulas hystoriadas. Illustrated with nearly 200 woodcuts, this work quickly became the most-read book in Spain, beloved of both children and adults. Reprinted many times in the next three centuries and carried to the New World, it brought to Spanish letters a cornucopia of Aesopic fables, oriental apologues, and folktales that were borrowed by such writers as Cervantes, Lope de Vega, and especially the fabulists Iriarte and Samaniego. John Keller and Clark Keating now present the first English translation of this important literary work. The Latin and German lineage of La vida was significant, for it placed Spain in the mainstream of European fable lore. The highly fictitious life of Aesop, the misshapen Greek slave who reached the highest social level, contributed to the development of medieval romance and the picaresque novel. The book is thus important to students of comparative literature, literary history, and the development of the Spanish language. Of equal value are the woodcuts, which depict the daily life of medieval Europe and contribute to a better understanding of fifteenth-century art history, bookmaking, natural history, and the visualization of narrative. La vida del Ysopet thus constitutes one of the finest concordances of text and illustration in European literary history.
