Book Synopsis The Body Fantastic by : Frank Gonzalez-Crussi
Download or read book The Body Fantastic written by Frank Gonzalez-Crussi and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2021-08-10 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The body in dreams, myths, legends, and anecdotes of the fantastic as expressions of human corporeality. In The Body Fantastic, Frank Gonzalez-Crussi looks at the human body through the lens of dreams, myths, legends, and anecdotes of the bizarre, exploring the close connection of the fictitious and the fabulous to our conception of the body. He chronicles, among other curious cases, the man who ate everything (including boiled hedgehogs and mice on toast), the therapeutic powers of saliva, hair that burst into flames, and an "amphibian man" who lived under water. Drawing on clinical records, popular lore, and art, history, and literature, Gonzalez-Crussi considers the body in both real and imaginary dimensions. Myths and stories, Gonzalez-Crussi reminds us, are the symbolic expression of our aspirations and emotions. These fantastic tales of bodies come from the deepest regions of the human psyche. Ancient Greeks, for example, believed that the uterus wandered around inside a woman's body--an "animal within an animal." If a woman sniffed an unpleasant odor, the uterus would retreat. Organized "digestive excess" began with the eating and drinking contests of antiquity and continue through the hot-dog eating competitions of today. And the "libido-podalic association," connecting male sexuality and the foot, insinuated itself into mainstream medicine in the sixteenth century; meanwhile, the feet of women in some cultures were scrupulously kept from view. Gonzalez-Crussi shows that the many imaginary representations of the body are very much a part of our corporeality.
Book Synopsis Four Centuries of Special Geography by : O.F.G. Sitwell
Download or read book Four Centuries of Special Geography written by O.F.G. Sitwell and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 1993-11-01 with total page 684 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geography as an academic discipline dates back to the last few decades of the nineteenth century. However, during the preceding centuries a large body of English-language literature relevant to the field of special geography was published. Four Centuries of Special Geography lists all the works published before 1888 and includes descriptions of each entry and notes on later editions. Francis Sitwell has written an extensive introduction in which he provides a detailed guide to the organization and contents of the bibliography. He also evaluates special geography as a genre which contributed to scholarly discourse from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries. In addition, he examines the genre as a whole and discusses its relation to the evolving world of ideas during the same time period. The result of several years of data-gathering, this book will be a valuable research tool for anyone seeking to examine aspects of the development of the field of geography in the years before it was defined as a distinct academic discipline. It will also be useful to those whose research focuses on the acquisition and transmission of geographical knowledge prior to the twentieth century, in particular on the place of geography in educational curricula.

This book was released on 2006-05-01 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given plenty of water, and Madrid is an ideal place for flowers. Such carnations as those which are grown in the nursery gardens there are never seen elsewhere-they are a revelation in horticulture; nor are the roses any less wonderful. The bouquet with which a Spaniard, whether hidalgo or one of your servants, greets your birthday is generally a pyramid almost as tall as yourself. It needs to be placed in a large earthenware jar on the floor, and if you should be happy enough to have a good many friends, there is scarcely room for anything else in your gabinete. -from "Chapter IV: Spanish Society" At the turn of the 20th century, British and American tourists and travelers were only just beginning to explore the beauty of Spain and acquaint themselves with her people. This ode to a romantic and-in 1902, when this volume was published-increasingly cosmopolitan nation is a wonderful introduction to the nation at the time, exploring the land and its inhabitants, popular amusements, politics and government, commerce and agriculture, religion and education, arts and literature, the etiquette at the royal court, the position of women, the wonders of Madrid, and much more. Also included: chapters on "Portuguese Life in Town and Country" by Eugene E. Street. OF INTEREST TO: students of European culture, armchair travelers

Legend has it that when Caesar's general arrived on Portuguese soil in the first century CE, he claimed to have discovered a country blessed with a mild climate and a beautiful coastline, but whose inhabitants were ungoverned and ungovernable. Today, the Portuguese are still impulsive, set in their ways, and resistant to change, yet they are ever charming, romantic, and nostalgic, with an unshakable loyalty toward family and friends. Culture Smart! Portugal takes you beneath the surface of this fascinating country and shows you how to blend in and make the most of your visit. In these pages, you will gain insight into Portuguese priorities and learn how to tap into a helpful and resourceful nature that is often overlooked by the casual visitor. Beneath a sometimes vociferous manner, the Portuguese are laid-back and gentle, so slacken your pace, put away your watch, and enjoy the rich meals, lively festivals, and ancient traditions of this great land. Have a more meaningful and successful time abroad through a better understanding of the local culture. Chapters on values, attitudes, customs, and daily life will help you make the most of your visit, while tips on etiquette and communication will help you navigate unfamiliar situations and avoid faux pas.
