Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vacuum arc deposition is employed to create a barium and/or strontium plasma which is subsequently deposited/implanted onto a nickel cathode substrate. The primary motivation for this work is the critical need for a reliable, repeatable, long-lived thermionic cathode for the production of high power, microsecond duration microwave pulses; such cathodes may also have applicability for lower current density continuous wave devices. This novel approach to manufacturing an oxide cathode eliminates the binders that may subsequently (and unpredictably) poison cathode emission. Removal of the poisoning mechanisms has yielded oxide cathodes capable of emission densities in the 20 A/sq cm regime. Cathode lifetime and emission may be varied via the control over the deposition parameters such as coating thickness, implantation energy, and plasma stoichiometry. The deposition is performed by generating a cathodic arc discharge at the surface of a barium or barium-strontium alloy rod. The metal plasma thus created is then deposited on the substrate which can be negatively biased to encourage implantation during the deposition process. The deposition is performed with sufficient background oxygen present to oxidize the highly reactive metal coating. The plasma deposition is monitored via a rate thickness monitor, an optical emission spectrometer for plasma composition information, and an electrostatic Langmuir probe for the determination of the plasma density and temperature profile. Cathodes thus produced are analyzed by drawing pulsed current at a constant voltage for various values of decreasing cathode temperature in order to generate practical work function distributions which provide an indication of the quality and expected life time of the cathode.

Book excerpt: The Collected Works of Irving Langmuir, Volume 5: Plasma and Oscillations is an 11-chapter text covers the extensive research study of Langmuir in the field of gas discharges. This book specifically tackles oscillations in ionized gases. The opening chapters describe the plasma-boundary phenomena and the use of a probe to separate the primary electron beam from the scattered electrons. The succeeding chapters deal with the collisions between electrons and gas molecules, oscillations in ionized gases, and the interaction of electron and positive ion space charges in cathode sheaths. These topics are followed by discussions on the general theory of the plasma of an arc and the properties of metastable atoms and electrons produced by resonance radiation in neon. The concluding chapter provides experimental evidence that the secondary electrons originate from bombardment by metastable atoms. This book is of value to physical chemists and physical chemistry researchers.

Book excerpt: Secondary electron emission is an important consideration in radiation hardening of electronics. Basic information on this phenomenon, its influence, and the factors that affect its magnitude are required. Space -charge effects on the low-energy, secondary-electron emission currents flowing within any evacuated, two-electrode, plane-parallel system bombarded by KeV or MeV electrons or photons are treated in this report. The secondary emission from each irradiated electrode is assumed to be representable by a Maxwellian distribution, as is done in thermionic electron emission. This permits the complete analytical solution for the thermionic problem to be carried over in its entirety to the secondary case. The principal objective is to determine the net current density between the electrodes J sub c, given the saturation current density J sub s, or vice-versa, under known geometrical and electrical conditions. It is found that d(2) J sub o, where d is the electrode separation, is a useful parameter for characterizing space-charge effects in a parallel-plate geometry system. Generalized graphs employing this parameter are presented so that the results derived here can be readily applied to cases of interest; they permit the determination of threshold voltage conditions for space-charge limitation and partial retardation effects in a diode configuration. Other graphs show the variation of d(2) J sub c with applied voltage. These theoretical predictions are compared to data derived from some AFCRL experiments, in which foil electrodes of aluminum, tantalum and gold were irradiated by 60Co gamma-rays and 10 MeV electrons. Book excerpt: This book gives a comprehensive overview of hydrogen negative ion sources and their applications to particle acceleration and nuclear fusion. The book begins with fundamental aspects of negative ion production by volume and surface processes in hydrogen and its isotopes. It covers key topics, such as the need for separation of negative ion production and extraction regions, the need for lowering the work function of the plasma electrode by using caesium vapor or special materials for caesium-free sources, and the ion extractor structure required for hydrogen negative ion sources. Chapters covering various specific ion sources and applications are written by scientists who participated in their development and include sources for accelerators and for neutral beam injection into controlled nuclear fusion reactors.

Book excerpt: An intense charged particle beam can be characterized as an organized charged particle flow for which the effects of beam self-fields are of major importance in describing the evolution of the flow. Research employing such beams is now a rapidly growing field with important applications ranging from the development of high power sources of coherent radiation to inertial confinement fusion. Major programs have now been established at several laboratories in the United States and Great Britain, as well as in the USSR, Japan, and several Eastern and Western European nations. In addition, related research activities are being pursued at the graduate level at several universities in the US and abroad. When the author first entered this field in 1973 there was no single reference text that provided a broad survey of the important topics, yet contained sufficient detail to be of interest to the active researcher. That situation has persisted, and this book is an attempt to fill the void. As such, the text is aimed at the graduate student, or beginning researcher; however, it contains ample information to be a convenient reference source for the advanced worker.

Book excerpt: This volume, which contains 15 contributions, is based on a minicourse held at the 1987 IEEE Plasma Science Meeting. The purpose of the lectures in the course was to acquaint the students with the multidisciplinary nature of computational techniques and the breadth of research areas in plasma science in which computation can address important physics and engineering design issues. These involve: electric and magnetic fields, MHD equations, chemistry, radiation, ionization etc. The contents of the contributions, written subsequent to the minicourse, stress important aspects of computer applications. They are: 1) the numerical methods used; 2) the range of applicability; 3) how the methods are actually employed in research and in the design of devices; and, as a compendium, 4) the multiplicity of approaches possible for any one problem. The materials in this book are organized by both subject and applications which display some of the richness in computational plasma physics.
