Book Synopsis Topological Complexity and Related Topics by : Mark Grant
Download or read book Topological Complexity and Related Topics written by Mark Grant and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2018-02-14 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the mini-workshop on Topological Complexity and Related Topics, held from February 28–March 5, 2016, at the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach. Topological complexity is a numerical homotopy invariant, defined by Farber in the early twenty-first century as part of a topological approach to the motion planning problem in robotics. It continues to be the subject of intensive research by homotopy theorists, partly due to its potential applicability, and partly due to its close relationship to more classical invariants, such as the Lusternik–Schnirelmann category and the Schwarz genus. This volume contains survey articles and original research papers on topological complexity and its many generalizations and variants, to give a snapshot of contemporary research on this exciting topic at the interface of pure mathematics and engineering.

Book Synopsis Translation Surfaces by : Jayadev S. Athreya
Download or read book Translation Surfaces written by Jayadev S. Athreya and published by American Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2024-04-17 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook offers an accessible introduction to translation surfaces. Building on modest prerequisites, the authors focus on the fundamentals behind big ideas in the field: ergodic properties of translation flows, counting problems for saddle connections, and associated renormalization techniques. Proofs that go beyond the introductory nature of the book are deftly omitted, allowing readers to develop essential tools and motivation before delving into the literature. Beginning with the fundamental example of the flat torus, the book goes on to establish the three equivalent definitions of translation surface. An introduction to the moduli space of translation surfaces follows, leading into a study of the dynamics and ergodic theory associated to a translation surface. Counting problems and group actions come to the fore in the latter chapters, giving a broad overview of progress in the 40 years since the ergodicity of the Teichmüller geodesic flow was proven. Exercises are included throughout, inviting readers to actively explore and extend the theory along the way. Translation Surfaces invites readers into this exciting area, providing an accessible entry point from the perspectives of dynamics, ergodicity, and measure theory. Suitable for a one- or two-semester graduate course, it assumes a background in complex analysis, measure theory, and manifolds, while some familiarity with Riemann surfaces and ergodic theory would be beneficial.

Book Synopsis Dynamics, Geometry, Number Theory by : David Fisher
Download or read book Dynamics, Geometry, Number Theory written by David Fisher and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2022-02-07 with total page 573 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This definitive synthesis of mathematician Gregory Margulis’s research brings together leading experts to cover the breadth and diversity of disciplines Margulis’s work touches upon. This edited collection highlights the foundations and evolution of research by widely influential Fields Medalist Gregory Margulis. Margulis is unusual in the degree to which his solutions to particular problems have opened new vistas of mathematics; his ideas were central, for example, to developments that led to the recent Fields Medals of Elon Lindenstrauss and Maryam Mirzhakhani. Dynamics, Geometry, Number Theory introduces these areas, their development, their use in current research, and the connections between them. Divided into four broad sections—“Arithmeticity, Superrigidity, Normal Subgroups”; “Discrete Subgroups”; “Expanders, Representations, Spectral Theory”; and “Homogeneous Dynamics”—the chapters have all been written by the foremost experts on each topic with a view to making them accessible both to graduate students and to experts in other parts of mathematics. This was no simple feat: Margulis’s work stands out in part because of its depth, but also because it brings together ideas from different areas of mathematics. Few can be experts in all of these fields, and this diversity of ideas can make it challenging to enter Margulis’s area of research. Dynamics, Geometry, Number Theory provides one remedy to that challenge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. (y05/00)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modified gravity models play an important role in contemporary theoretical cosmology. The present book proposes a novel approach to the topic based on techniques from noncommutative geometry, especially the spectral action functional as a gravity model. The book discusses applications to early universe models and slow-roll inflation models, to the problem of cosmic topology, to non-isotropic cosmologies like mixmaster universes and Bianchi IX gravitational instantons, and to multifractal structures in cosmology. Relations between noncommutative and algebro-geometric methods in cosmology is also discussed, including the occurrence of motives, periods, and modular forms in spectral models of gravity. Book Synopsis Stochastic Dynamic Programming and the Control of Queueing Systems by : Linn I. Sennott
Download or read book Stochastic Dynamic Programming and the Control of Queueing Systems written by Linn I. Sennott and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-09-25 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A path-breaking account of Markov decision processes-theory and computation This book's clear presentation of theory, numerous chapter-end problems, and development of a unified method for the computation of optimal policies in both discrete and continuous time make it an excellent course text for graduate students and advanced undergraduates. Its comprehensive coverage of important recent advances in stochastic dynamic programming makes it a valuable working resource for operations research professionals, management scientists, engineers, and others. Stochastic Dynamic Programming and the Control of Queueing Systems presents the theory of optimization under the finite horizon, infinite horizon discounted, and average cost criteria. It then shows how optimal rules of operation (policies) for each criterion may be numerically determined. A great wealth of examples from the application area of the control of queueing systems is presented. Nine numerical programs for the computation of optimal policies are fully explicated. The Pascal source code for the programs is available for viewing and downloading on the Wiley Web site at www.wiley.com/products/subject/mathematics. The site contains a link to the author's own Web site and is also a place where readers may discuss developments on the programs or other aspects of the material. The source files are also available via ftp at ftp://ftp.wiley.com/public/sci_tech_med/stochastic Stochastic Dynamic Programming and the Control of Queueing Systems features: * Path-breaking advances in Markov decision process techniques, brought together for the first time in book form * A theorem/proof format (proofs may be omitted without loss of continuity) * Development of a unified method for the computation of optimal rules of system operation * Numerous examples drawn mainly from the control of queueing systems * Detailed discussions of nine numerical programs * Helpful chapter-end problems * Appendices with complete treatment of background material
