Insbesondere in Deutschland ist die Problematik ungleicher Ressourcenverteilung in jüngster Zeit wieder in den Vordergrund getreten, und zwar in Form der Debatte, ob es denn eine „Unterschicht“ – oder, wie es die Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung in ihrer Studie politisch korrekter formulierte, ein abgehängtes Prekariat – gibt. Vor diesem Hintergrund stellen sich nun mehrere Fragen: erstens, was hinter dem Konzept sozialer Ungleichheit steckt; zweitens, wie bestimmte Ressourcen oder Güter in Deutschland zwischen den einzelnen Bevölkerungsgruppen verteilt sind; drittens, wie es zu dieser (Ungleich)verteilung kommt. Diese drei Fragen liefern den Handlungsrahmen für die vorliegende Hausarbeit, die eine inhaltliche Erweiterung des Referats „Empirische Befunde sozialer Ungleichheit in Deutschland“ darstellt. Sie ist wie folgt gegliedert: Zunächst wird in Kapitel 2 der Begriff der sozialen Ungleichheit definiert. Sodann werden in Kapitel 3 die zentralen Dimensionen sozialer Ungleichheit näher besprochen. Kapitel 4 befasst sich schließlich mit einigen ausgewählten Theorien zur Entstehung und zur Entwicklung sozialer Ungleichheiten. An Literatur wird hauptsächlich auf den „Klassiker“ der Ungleichheitsforschung Stefan Hradil (insbesondere 2001 und 2006) sowie auf die Werkte von Burzan (2004) und Diezinger/Mayr-Kleffel (1999) zurückgegriffen, ergänzt durch weiterführende theoretische Literatur, empirische Studien und aktuelle Online-Dateien.

Zuerst einmal wird der Begriff „Soziale Ungleichheit“ definiert. Anschließend werden die Dimensionen sozialer Ungleichheit vorgestellt. Im dritten Kapitel wird, mit Hilfe empirischer Daten, die Entwicklung der sozialen Ungleichheit in Deutschland in den letzten Jahrzehnten analysiert.

Als eine Art AbschluB der Ausbildung irn Methodenschwerpunkt biete ich von Zeit zu Zeit ein Seminar an, in dem die Studierenden zu einer von mir oder ihnen vorgeschlagenen Fragestellung eine eigene kleine Studie durchfuhren sollen. Sie erhalten Zugang zu den besten allgemein verfugba ren Datenquellen, die sie fur Sekundaranalysen nutzen ki:innen. In einer ersten Runde stellen sie vor, wie sie fur sich die zunachst noch unbestirnmte Fragestellung prazisiert haben, welche Literatur zum Problem sie gefunden haben, welchen theoretischen Zugang sie wahlen und welche Hypothesen sie wie priifen wollen. Die Diskussion dieser V orstellungen fuhrt dann zu weiteren Prazisierungen und meistens zu Einschrankungen der manchmal fast hybriden urspriinglichen V orstellungen. Dann folgt die Umsetzung des V orhabens und die Darstellung von Fragestellung und Ergebnissen in einer schriftlichen Seminararbeit. Gegen Ende des Semesters werden die Arbeiten dann im Seminar vorgestellt und von den Teilnehmem diskutiert.

Book excerpt: This book addresses the highly differentiated spatial, social, cultural and demographic structure(s) of Germany, with a particular focus on the reciprocal relations between different levels of spatial development. The historical development of Germany serves as a background in order to provide context for the development of spatially relevant ideas and ideals (whether in relation to politics, landscape, or culture). In this regard, questions of divergence and convergence become highly salient. The book makes the complexity of spatial and social developments in Germany comprehensible. The neopragmatic approach adopted here allows bringing together different theoretical strands while providing a basis for independent regional geographic research at the same time. Beginning with an overview of the physical structures of Germany which provides the material point of departure for the societal development of Germany, key aspects of the German history are discussed. Particular attention is paid to the reciprocal influence between material substrate and notions of landscape. Here, specific ‘German’ trajectories of aesthetic and normative conceptions of landscape become clear. A common theme throughout the book are questions of divergence and of efforts towards convergence, which become evident when considering past and present economic, political, and demographic developments. Efforts to tackle current challenges, such as adapting to climate change and mitigating it, or securing raw materials, also become apparent. The complexity of spatial processes in Germany is illustrated in case study regions dealing with the challenges of structural change in traditional industrial regions (such as the Ruhr area), or e.g. efforts of Berlin to position and find itself as the capital of a unified Germany. Overall, the book shows how theory-driven regional geographic research can make spatiotemporal complexities tangible and comprehensible.

Book excerpt: The social question is back. Yet today's social question is not primarily between labour and capital, as it was in the nineteenth century and throughout much of the twentieth. The contemporary social question is located at the interstices between the global South and the global North. It finds its expression in movements of people, seeking a better life or fleeing unsustainable social, political, economic, and ecological conditions. It is transnationalized not only because migrants and their significant others entertain ties across the borders of national states, staying in touch with family and friends, receiving or sending financial remittances in transnational social spaces. Also of importance are cross--border recruitment schemes for workers and the cross-border diffusion of norms appealed to in the case of migration--for example, the social right to decent work as a human right. Moreover, migration can become an issue of inclusion or exclusion in fields important to life chances in the emigration, transit, or immigration states--a transnationalization of national states. And, as in the nineteenth century, political conflicts arise, constituting the social question as a public concern. In earlier periods class differences dominated conflicts. While class has always been criss-crossed by manifold heterogeneities, not least of all cultural ones around ethnicity, religion, and language, it is these latter heterogeneities that have sharpened in situations of immigration and emigration over the past decades. Casting a wide net in terms of conceptual and empirical scope, this book tackles both the social structure and the politics of social inequalities. It sets a comprehensive agenda for research which also includes the public role of social scientists in dealing with the transnationalized social question.

Within those changes, reforms do not go ‘as planned’ but, as is always the case with processes of rationali- tion, have a series of unintended effects. At the same time it becomes incre- ingly clear who in this process are the winners and who are the losers, although this is still subject to fluctuation and change. This can be illustrated by two - amples from current events: Where the range of taught courses is concerned, as part of the Bologna Process the new structuring of student study paths and their organisation is aimed at unifying the European area of science to ensure a study that is equally permissive and efficient. However, it is to be deplored that the mobility of s- dents has become more restricted because of an increasing specialisation in the available study paths. Also, bachelor degrees do not meet with the anticipated high response from the labour market in all countries, so that the master’s degree is becoming more or less a ‘must’, while at the same time the number of study places on master’s courses is limited. Instead of the intended reduction in the duration of study time in comparison to the previous German ‘Magister’ and ‘Diplom’, rather a prolongation in the duration of studies has been recorded.
