Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In examining the founding of New England towns during the seventeenth century, John Frederick Martin investigates an old subject with fresh insight. Whereas most historians emphasize communalism and absence of commerce in the seventeenth century, Martin demonstrates that colonists sought profits in town-founding, that town founders used business corporations to organize themselves into landholding bodies, and that multiple and absentee landholding was common. In reviewing some sixty towns and the activities of one hundred town founders, Martin finds that many town residents were excluded from owning common lands and from voting. It was not until the end of the seventeenth century, when proprietors separated from towns, that town institutions emerged as fully public entities for the first time. Martin's study will challenge historians to rethink not only social history but also the cultural history of early New England. Instead of taking sides in the long-standing debate between Puritan scholars and business historians, Martin identifies strains within Puritanism and the rest of the colonists' culture that both discouraged and encouraged land commerce, both supported and undermined communalism, both hindered and hastened development of the wilderness. Rather than portray colonists one-dimensionally, Martin analyzes how several different and competing ethics coexisted within a single, complex, and vibrant New England culture.

Book excerpt: The town of Warren, Rhode Island, began life as a maritime community in the late 1700s. It continued to base its economy on the sea until the mid-1800s when the construction of a mill shifted the town's economic base to textiles. This exciting photographic history of Warren chronicles the town's development from about 1870 to 1970 - to this day, Warren includes a number of 18th and 19th century homes, wharves, and warehouses, and many of the earlier incarnations of these structures are still recognizable in today's landscape. The view from the steeple of the Methodist church is substantially unchanged from that which appears in a photograph taken in the 1870s, and only the stately elm trees - since victims to arboreal disease - are missing today from the 19th century streetscapes. This marvelous collection portrays the living history of a charming New England seaport town.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Barrington, Rhode Island, began in the 1640s with a small outpost on the shores of Narragansett Bay. Despite its total destruction during King Philip's War in 1675-1676, by 1717, it was incorporated as a town named Barrington after the brother of the governor of Massachusetts. During the 18th century, Barrington grew into a strong agricultural community. In the 1850s, the brickyard became a full-scale industry, and the new railroad accelerated population growth by attracting people seeking a summer resort and others to work in the brickyard, especially Irish and French Canadian immigrants. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Rhode Island Lace Works brought a new wave of Italian families, yet the town remained primarily an agricultural community, combined with oyster culture. Elegant residences sprang up along the shores of the Barrington River and Narragansett Bay, while Maple Avenue became the center of a large Italian community. After World War II, the population exploded and Barrington became the premier bedroom community of Rhode Island due to an outstanding school system, a remarkable housing stock, and excellent recreational and boating opportunities.

Book excerpt: Now that academic consensus has turned away from the dichotomy between the literate culture of the Puritans and the oral culture of Native Americans, Cohen (English, U. of Texas-Austin) looks at the methodological, disciplinary, legal, political, and aesthetic implications for studying communication during the early period of English colonies in North America. He looks at native audience, good noise from New England, forests of gestures, and multimedia combat and the Pequot War.
