Book Synopsis Hunger and War by : Wendy Z. Goldman
Download or read book Hunger and War written by Wendy Z. Goldman and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Making use of recently released Soviet archival materials, Hunger and War investigates state food supply policy and its impact on Soviet society during World War II. It explores the role of the state in provisioning the urban population, particularly workers, with food, and in feeding the Red army; the medicalization of hunger; hunger in blockaded Leningrad; and civilian mortality from hunger and malnutrition in other home front industrial regions. New research reported here challenges and complicates many of the narratives and counter-narratives about the war. The authors engage such difficult subjects as starvation mortality, bitterness over privation and inequalities in provisioning, and conflicts among state organizations. At the same time, they recognize the considerable role played by the Soviet state in organizing supplies of food to adequately support the military effort and defense production, and in developing policies that promoted social stability amid upheaval. The book makes a significant contribution to scholarship on the Soviet population's experience of World War II as well as to studies of war and famine"--Provided by publisher.

This book was released on 1997-05-27 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years there have been alarming reports of rapid decreases in life expectancy in the New Independent States (former members of the Soviet Union). To help assess priorities for health policy, the Committee on Population organized two workshopsâ€"the first on adult mortality and disability, the second on adult health priorities and policies. Participants included demographers, epidemiologists, public health specialists, economists, and policymakers from the NIS countries, the United States, and Western Europe. This volume consists of selected papers presented at the workshops. They assess the reliability of data on mortality, morbidity, and disability; analyze regional patterns and trends in mortality rates and causes of death; review evidence about major determinants of adult mortality; and discuss implications for health policy.
Book Synopsis Famine Politics in Maoist China and the Soviet Union by : Felix Wemheuer
Download or read book Famine Politics in Maoist China and the Soviet Union written by Felix Wemheuer and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2014-06-24 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the twentieth century, 80 percent of all famine victims worldwide died in China and the Soviet Union. In this rigorous and thoughtful study, Felix Wemheuer analyzes the historical and political roots of these socialist-era famines, in which overambitious industrial programs endorsed by Stalin and Mao Zedong created greater disasters than those suffered under prerevolutionary regimes. Focusing on famine as a political tool, Wemheuer systematically exposes how conflicts about food among peasants, urban populations, and the socialist state resulted in the starvation death of millions. A major contribution to Chinese and Soviet history, this provocative analysis examines the long-term effects of the great famines on the relationship between the state and its citizens and argues that the lessons governments learned from the catastrophes enabled them to overcome famine in their later decades of rule.

Book Synopsis Nutrition in Spaceflight and Weightlessness Models by : Helen W. Lane
Download or read book Nutrition in Spaceflight and Weightlessness Models written by Helen W. Lane and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1999-12-20 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tens of thousands of miles above Earth's atmosphere, orbiting this planet like pieces from a child's giant erector set, NASA's massive International Space Station slowly takes shape. When completed, as many as 16 countries will provide crew members for this orbiting international community. But while this will not be the first extended stay of humans in space-Skylab, Mir Space Station, and Shuttle-Mir missions all involved extended-stay periods-it will give birth to some new questions about one of space exploration's biggest concerns: providing adequate nutrition essential to good physical and mental health in space. Nutrition in Spaceflight and Weightlessness Models consolidates nutritional observations from 38 years of human spaceflight. It is a compilation of nutritional knowledge and accomplishments from the early 1970's to the recent Shuttle-MIR program. It provides basic nutritional concepts, as well as broad coverage, of the effect of space and weightlessness on nutrition status and physiology. Nutrition in Spaceflight and Weightlessness Models addresses the utility of ground-based weightlessness simulations; the role of electrolytes, calcium, protein, iron, and micronutrients in optimal nutrition; and energy utilization by space crews. The book also explores regenerative life-support and food systems for space and planetary missions; the results of basic research in metabolism that illustrate the physiological changes that occur during spaceflight; new concepts and recommendations for astronaut nutrition in future spaceflights; and, the lab capabilities of the International Space Station.
