Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work, two senior naval historians analyze the discussions held in leading Soviet political, military, and naval circles concerning naval strategy and the decisions taken for warship-building programmes. They describe the reconstitution of the fleet under difficult conditions from the end of the Civil War up to the mid-1920s, leading to a change from classical naval strategy to a Jeune ecole model in the first two Five-Year Plans, including efforts to obtain foreign assistance in the design of warships and submarines. Their aim is to explain the reasons for the sudden change in 1935 to begin building a big ocean-going fleet. After a period of co-operation with Germany from 1939-41, the plans came to a halt when Hitler attacked the Soviet Union in 1941. Finally, this work covers the reopening of the naval planning processes in 1944 and 1945 and the discussions of the naval leadership with Stalin, the party and government officials about the direction of the new building programmes as the Cold War began.
Book Synopsis Soviet Naval Doctrine and Policy, 1956-1986 by : Robert Waring Herrick
Download or read book Soviet Naval Doctrine and Policy, 1956-1986 written by Robert Waring Herrick and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Herrick shows in this detailed book the arguments with which Admiral Gorshkov managed to change the Soviet Navy from the coastal force coastal mind-set that he inherited to the ocean-going fleet with, perhaps, an ocean-going mentality that he handed over to his successor. More important than the ships, aircraft, their sensors and weapons, was the navy's new wartime mission: no longer confined to providing support directly to the army, it was also to dispute and deny to the United States and its allies the use of the seaward approaches to the Soviet Union.

Book Synopsis The Soviet Naval Threat To Europe by : Bruce W. Watson
Download or read book The Soviet Naval Threat To Europe written by Bruce W. Watson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-01-09 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1989. Given the events of 1987 and 1988-the death of Admiral Sergei G. Gorshkov, who had served as Commander-in-Chief of the Soviet Navy from 1956 to 1985 and was so influencial in the development of the current Soviet Navy, the Soviet policy of glasnost', the U .S.-Soviet arms negotiations, Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev's visit to Washington, President Ronald Reagan's visit to Moscow, and the treaty concerning intermediate-range nuclear weapons- a study of the Soviet naval threat to Europe is particularly timely. This study begins by examining Soviet military and naval strategy, which provides a view of how the Soviets intend to use their forces. Then the book explore Soviet naval capabilities and operations, because a full understanding of Soviet naval power provides an understanding of the isolation that Europeans often feel. In the fourth and fifth sections of the book we examine the threat to northern and southern Europe.
