Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1986, examines the challenges the United States faced in maintaining a strong nuclear deterrence capability in the Far East without giving rise to political tensions among its allies. The Soviet aggression in the region, shown in the invasion of Afghanistan and the shooting down of a Korean airliner, demonstrated the need for a Western counterbalance, but the Asian nations were wary of becoming pawns in a nuclear power play between the superpowers. This book evaluates the meaning of Moscow’s military buildup in the global context; analyses the impact of the buildup from the perspective of China, Korea, Japan, the nations of ASEAN, Australia and New Zealand; explores the interaction of the buildup with the unresolved conflict on the Korean peninsula; and assesses the European experience with the Soviet nuclear threat and examines its implications for Asia. It also evaluates the linkages between European and Asian security.

Book excerpt: In examining the economic and social reforms of Gorbachev's Soviet Union, the contributors to this new study provide a broad portrait of the state of current soviet relations with the countries of the Asia-Pacific region, the prospects for change, and the perceived role of the Soviet Union in that change. Leading established scholars and specialists from the countries of the Asia-Pacific region study this new Soviet phenomenon and evince a mixture of enthusiasm and apprehension about Moscow's new policy overtures to the region. Mikhail Gorbachev's speech in the Soviet Far East city of Vladivostok on July 28, 1986, was widely read and commented upon throughout East and Southeast Asia, and raised many unanswered questions: How much has the Soviet Union really changed? Will China, the principal target of Soviet overtures, respond positively and, if so, what will the implications be for the rest of the region? What do these sweeping changes mean for the region in practical terms? The Soviet Union and the Asia-Pacific Region considers these questions and offers insight and provocative commentary on the current attitudes of the many Asia-Pacific countries toward the Soviet Union.

Book excerpt: There has been too complacent a view that contends that the next century -- the so-called Pacific Century -- will see power essentially defined in an economic sense. This book questions that notion by examining the evolving structure of power in the Pacific. t takes the view that while economics will have an increased weight in the power equation, military strength will still be a defining feature. The essays in this volume provide crisp analyses of a balance of power, the notion of a security architecture, and regional defence dilemmas. They then examine the shifting roles of the four major Pacific powers, China, Japan, Russia and the United States, all of which will essentially shape the future of the Pacific in the next century.

Book excerpt: For over half a century, since Pearl Harbor brought the US into the Pacific War, America has been a dominant military power in Asia, challenged only by the then Soviet Union and China. This is the first unclassified account of America's military stake and current defensive and offensive capacity in Asia. It analyzes the role of US armed forces in Asia, including deterrent nuclear forces, in the context of defense policy and strategy. The possible future of US forces in the region is considered, and the book also considers the views of Asian nations on America’s continuing presence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The years 1900 to 1954 marked the transformation from an exotic, colonized "Far East" to a more autonomous, prominent "Asia Pacific". This anthology examines the grand strategies of great powers as they vied for influence and ultimately hegemony in the region. At the turn of the twentieth century, the main contestants included the venerable British Empire and the aspiring Japan and United States. The unwieldy leviathan of China, the European imperial holdings in Southeast Asia, and the expanses of the western Pacific emerged as battlegrounds in literal and geopolitical terms. Other less powerful nations, such as India, Burma, Australia, and French Indochina, also exercised agency in crafting grand strategies to further their interests and in their interactions with those great powers. Among the many factors affecting all nations invested in the Asia Pacific were such traditional elements as economics, military power, and diplomacy, as well as fluid traits like ideology, culture, and personality. The era saw the decline of British and European influence in the Asia Pacific, the rise and fall of Japanese imperialism, the emergence of American primacy, the ongoing struggle for independence in Southeast Asia, and China’s resurrection as a contender for hegemony. Great powers shifted and so too did their grand strategies.
