Book excerpt: The development of low observable air vehicles by the United States coupled with the historic propensity of the Soviet Union toward the defense of its borders raises the possibility of Soviet development of acoustic systems for detection and tracking of air vehicles as part of such defenses. This report reviews and assesses Soviet research in atmospheric acoustics. Topics considered relevant were aircraft noise, background acoustic noise, propagation, meteorological remote sensing, microphone technology, processing of acoustic signals, and acoustic-gravity waves and ionospheric detection. This study should provide an indication of the maturity of the Soviet technology base required for the development of potential acoustic detection and tracking systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes, using first-person accounts, the history of the development in the Soviet Union and, later, in Russia of an extremely important technical field and how that history was influenced by WWI, WWII, and the Cold War, by government bureaucracy, in both positive and negative ways, by the economic collapse of the Soviet Union, and most importantly, by the dedicated efforts of vast numbers of individuals, including some of the greatest scientific minds of the 20th century. It will make fascinating reading for engineers and scientists who were engaged in similar work in the West, for historians of the Cold War and of the Soviet Union, and for present day researchers who need to learn about Russian scientific contributions.Because of its importance to national security, much of the research and development effort in underwater acoustics was classified during the Cold War, both in the Soviet Union and the United States. This book presents the first declassified accounts of the development of numerous hydroacoustic systems by individuals having first-hand knowledge of the development efforts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently published papers by scientists from the former Soviet Union reveal to Western researchers a mature body of highly inventive and dedicated research. To analyze and assess this work, a group of six internationally recognized US experts in the field of penetration mechanics and hypervelocity impact reviewed hundreds of unclassified documents. Five broad, sometimes overlapping, research areas were chosen for assessment: Hypervelocity Impact Capabilities; Penetration Mechanics Experiments at Ordnance Velocities; Analytical Penetration Mechanics; Material Response to High-Velocity Impact and Penetration; and Numerical Simulations of Penetration Physics. Both similarities and differences between Soviet and Western research were noted and characterized, with particular attention paid to potential breakthrough technologies. Leading Soviet scientists and their organizations were identified, as were areas of potentially fruitful collaboration between researchers from the former Soviet Union and the United States, Soviet breakthroughs in penetration mechanics technology that far out-distanced Western efforts were not found, though potential breakthroughs were noted in several areas, including penetration models of brittle materials (principally ceramics), superdeep penetration of particles, and very-high-velocity electromagnetic launchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book concisely expounds the fundamental concepts, phenomena, theories and procedures in a complete and systematic sense. In this book, not only almost all the important achievements from predecessors but also the contributions from the author himself have been summed up profoundly. Starting from the derivation of fundamental equations, various classical acoustical phenomena such as reflection, refraction, scattering diffraction and absorption in atmosphere, as well as the influences of gravitation and rotation of the earth on the behaviors of different atmospheric waves including acoustic waves, have been discussed in viewpoints of wave acoustics and geometrical acoustics respectively. The recent developments of several computation methods in the field of atmospheric acoustics have been introduced in some detail. As for the application aspects, atmospheric remote sensing has been discussed from the angle of inverse problems.

Book excerpt: This is the first book to offer a complete and rigorous study of sound propagation and scattering in moving media that have regular and random inhomogeneities in adiabatic sound speed, density and medium velocity. The book is an invaluable resource for engineers and scientists who work on outdoor noise control, on acoustical detection and ranging in the atmosphere, and on acoustal remote sensing of the atmosphere and ocean, whether they are based in the industry, or government and military laboritories and institutions. It will be required reading for researchers who use numerical methods in these fields and in its step by step approach makes it an important reference for teachers and graduate students.
