Book Synopsis Music in the British Provinces, 1690–1914 by : Peter Holman
Download or read book Music in the British Provinces, 1690–1914 written by Peter Holman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The period covered by this volume, roughly from Purcell to Elgar, has traditionally been seen as a dark age in British musical history. Much has been done recently to revise this view, though research still tends to focus on London as the commercial and cultural hub of the British Isles. It is becoming increasingly clear, however, that by the mid-eighteenth century musical activity outside London was highly distinctive in terms of its reach, the way it was organized, and its size, richness, and quality. There was an extraordinary amount of musical activity of all sorts, in provincial theatres and halls, in the amateur orchestras and choirs that developed in most towns of any size, in taverns, and convivial clubs, in parish churches and dissenting chapels, and, of course, in the home. This is the first book to concentrate specifically on musical life in the provinces, bringing together new archival research and offering a fresh perspective on British music of the period. The essays brought together here testify to the vital role played by music in provincial culture, not only in socializing and networking, but in regional economies and rivalries, demographics and class dynamics, religion and identity, education and recreation, and community and the formation of tradition. Most important, perhaps, as our focus shifts from London to the regions, new light is shed on neglected figures and forgotten repertoires, all of them worthy of reconsideration.
Book Synopsis Patriarchal Structures and Ethnicity in the Italian Community in Britain by : Azadeh Medaglia
Download or read book Patriarchal Structures and Ethnicity in the Italian Community in Britain written by Azadeh Medaglia and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-16 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 2001, this book retraces the chronological history of the Italian Diaspora community in Britain from its inception in the eighteenth century to the present. The author describes the immigrants’ way of life, patterns of occupation, gender relations and modes of integration in the host country. In addition, the book focuses on the role of religion, an institution which has traditionally reinforced both Italian cultural identity and unequal gender relations. Until now, most ethnic studies have been carried out on racialized minorities - those with physical differences - and they have generally failed to emphasize the gender relations within minority communities.
Book Synopsis Naked Parish Priest by : Stephen Louden
Download or read book Naked Parish Priest written by Stephen Louden and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2003-08-01 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a survey sent out to Catholic clergy in the UK, this study is a major contribution from empirical theology towards interpreting the health and potential of the priesthood today. The issues raised by this new study concern the nature and health of the priesthood, a topic of most urgent concern at a time of clerical scandal and abuse. The conclusions of this book are extremely revealing but fundamentally positive for anyone concerned with the future of the Christian Church at the start of a new millennium.

Book Synopsis Church, nation and race by : Ulrike Ehret
Download or read book Church, nation and race written by Ulrike Ehret and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2013-07-19 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Church, nation and race compares the worldviews and factors that promoted or, indeed, opposed antisemitism amongst Catholics in Germany and England after the First World War. As a prequel to books on Hitler, fascism and genocide, the book turns towards ideas and attitudes that preceded and shaped the ideologies of the 1920s and 1940s. Apart from the long tradition of Catholic anti-Jewish prejudices, the book discusses new and old alternatives to European modernity offered by Catholics in Germany and England. This book is a political history of ideas that introduces Catholic views of modern society, race, nation and the ‘Jewish question’. It shows to what extent these views were able to inform political and social activity. Church, nation and race will interest academics and students of antisemitism, European history, German and British history.

Book Synopsis Roman Catholic Nuns in England and Wales, 1800-1937 by : Barbara Walsh
Download or read book Roman Catholic Nuns in England and Wales, 1800-1937 written by Barbara Walsh and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is still considerable ignorance about the life and work of female religious communities in England and Wales. The influence of women who developed professional careers in education, health and social care, while at the same time dedicating themselves to religious life, is presented here with a wealth of material relating to their work. Many widely held misconceptions about nuns are dispelled by the author's analysis of the growth and distribution of the religious orders and congregations, the scope and scale of their work and the ensuing financial and recruitment demands. Nuns and sisters took hands-on responsibility for the building, running and staffing of large and complex institutions, hospitals and schools. Their services were not solely confined to the needs of the expanding Roman Catholic community but had an impact on the surrounding society at many levels. This book makes a novel contribution to our understanding of the provision of welfare services by non-state agencies. It explores the socio-economic origins of recruits and the importance of the contribution made by the nuns, many of them Irish women migrants, to educational and social development in England and Wales. Fully illustrated, it also provides maps and valuable tabulated data to open up this field of research for social history scholars and others interested in the achievements of these women.
