Book Synopsis Buses in the Border Towns of London Country 1969-2019 (South of the Thames) by : Malcolm Batten
Download or read book Buses in the Border Towns of London Country 1969-2019 (South of the Thames) written by Malcolm Batten and published by Pen and Sword Transport. This book was released on 2024-03-30 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: London Transport was created in 1933 with monopoly powers. Not only did it have exclusive rights to run bus (and tram and trolleybus) services in the Greater London area, it also ran services in a Country Area all around London. Green Line express services linked the country towns to London and in most cases across to other country towns the other side of the metropolis. This country area extended north as far as Hitchin, east to Brentwood, south to Crawley and west to Windsor. But what of the towns at the edge of the country area? Here the green London Transport buses would meet the bus companies whose operations extended across the rest of the counties of Berkshire, Surrey, Kent etc. In some cases the town was at a node where more than one company worked in. Elsewhere, such as at Guildford there were local independent operators who had a share in the town services. It would all change from 1970 when the London Transport Country Area was transferred to the National Bus Company to form a new company named London Country Bus Services. This would later be split into four separate companies. Deregulation in 1985 and privatisation in the 1990s led to further changes in the names and ownership of bus companies. Consolidation since then has seen the emergence of national bus groups – Stagecoach, First Group, Arriva and Go-Ahead replacing the old names and liveries. But retrenchment by these companies has given an opportunity for new independent companies to fill the gaps. This book takes the form of an anti-clockwise tour around the perimeter of the London Country area, south of the Thames featuring a number of key towns starting at Slough and Windsor and ending at Gravesend, illustrating some of the many changes to bus companies that have occurred.

The Ring takes in many of London's leading attractions - for example, the Thames Barrier, Eltham Palace and Richmond Park - as well as overlooked gems such as Oxleas Meadows, the Parkland Walk and Abbey Mills Pumping Station, and gives a close-up view of the ever-changing Olympic Park. Book Synopsis Today's London Overground by : Justin Bailey
Download or read book Today's London Overground written by Justin Bailey and published by Pen and Sword Transport. This book was released on 2021-09-30 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Orange Line, the Ginger Line or the M25 Railway, call it what it what you will, the London Overground, born in 2007, has become one of London’s transport success stories. Running complimentary to, and in some places, in combination with, London Underground, it carries more than 180 million passengers a year on 9 lines and serves 112 stations over a combined length of more than 100 miles. An amalgamation of several commuter lines (and one London Underground Line) that ring London it now branches out to all points of the compass. Over recent years it’s also undergone unprecedented change and investment (with a few troubles along the way) with the phasing out of old and the introduction of new rolling stock. This book takes a photographic look at these changes including a look at the routes, the stations and the trains including Classes 172, 315, 317, 378 and the brand new 710s with a brief history of each. And with so much freight sharing the Overground routes this is briefly looked at as well.

Download or read book House of Commons - Transport Committee: Access to Ports - HC 266 written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Transport Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this report looking at policy for improving road and rail access to ports, the Transport Committee urges the Department for Transport (DfT) to become a keener advocate for UK ports. The Government should contribute to significant improvements to strategic networks which also deliver wider benefits - rather than simply expect port operators to pick up the entire bill for measures required to mitigate increased traffic due to port expansion. If the Government chooses to apply European Commission state aid rules in this area more strictly than other EU countries it should explain why it does so. Policy in this area should be applied consistently across the country. While some ports have contributed towards transport schemes to improve access, others have not and the differences in approach have not been explained or justified. Ports should also continue to contribute to local transport infrastructure improvements, following discussions with relevant local bodies. The Department for Transport should demonstrate whether port master plans have had any impact, highlighting good examples of such plans and of how they have influenced decision makers. Finally, the Government should devise a more effective successor to the Waterborne Freight Grant, to stimulate coastal shipping.
