Book Synopsis Conflict and Cooperation on Trans-Boundary Water Resources by : Richard E. Just
Download or read book Conflict and Cooperation on Trans-Boundary Water Resources written by Richard E. Just and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1998-01-31 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book demonstrates what the discipline of economics has to offer as support for analyzing cooperation on management of trans-boundary water resources. It also considers what the discipline of economics has to acquire to become a more effective contributor to trans-boundary water resource management given political, legal, social, physical, scientific, and ecological realities. This book has its genesis in a symposium of the International Water and Resource Economics Consortium held at Annapolis, Maryland, April 13-16, 1997. The symposium was organized by the editors and the book contains papers presented at the symposium with subsequent revisions. The symposium brought together both economists and agency management personnel for the purpose of discussing not only how economic tools apply to trans-boundary water management, but also of identifying the obstacles to making such tools useful and informative to politicians and negotiators in public decision making roles. INTERNATIONAL VERSUS DOMESTIC TRANS-BOUNDARY PROBLEMS Trans-boundary water problems arise in many dimensions. The two most important types of problems emphasized in this book are international and domestic interstate or interregional problems. Cooperation on international problems is especially difficult because enforcement must be voluntary given the sovereignty of nations and the absence of an effective legal enforcement mechanism. Agreements must be sustainable and self-enforced if they are to have lasting benefits. Every negotiating country must be convinced it will receive benefits before it gives its consent to cooperation. In the absence of enforceable agreements, trans-boundary (i. e.

Book Synopsis Global Mission by : Henry Harley Arnold
Download or read book Global Mission written by Henry Harley Arnold and published by Plunkett Lake Press. This book was released on 2023-07-06 with total page 675 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global Mission is General “Hap” Arnold’s personal story of his life and military career and a history of American military aviation with particular emphasis on World War II. “For twenty years prior to World War II General Arnold was a tireless and effective evangelist for American air power. No other foresaw more clearly than he the revolutionary impact of the airplane upon the methods and conduct of war. Hap Arnold performed still another public duty in recording for us the results and the conclusions of his lifetime experiences. Whatever he has to say about air power deserves the close attention of all his fellow citizens.” — General Dwight D. Eisenhower, US Army “The compellingly interesting autobiography of a great soldier-statesman and one of the finest presentations I have ever seen of the history of American military aviation.” — Lieutenant General James H. Doolittle, US Air Force “[T]his book is more than the chronicle of a flier’s life; it is in a sense a saga of United States air power, and particularly a top-level picture of the United States Army Air Force in World War II... Global Mission will take an important place in the growing library of war books... a delightful book; it brings out so strongly the lovable personality of “Hap” Arnold. It is an important book... these reminiscences are a monument to him.” — Hanson W. Baldwin, The New York Times “[An] interesting and important book” — Robert Gale Woolbert, Foreign Affairs “There are many groups of people who will profit by a careful reading of Global Mission. As General Bradley well said in a recent letter to me, ‘It is “must” reading for the young military men of today who will have to be the Marshalls and Arnolds and Kings in any future emergency.’ The thinking people of the United States will make wiser decisions in the selection of their leaders, both military and civil, if they have read Global Mission. They will understand more clearly the frightful errors which have been made in the past and their cost in blood and treasure... Any who are tempted to be pacifists or isolationists in the future had better read Global Mission to learn the implications which can flow from false doctrines. The historian who has the difficult job of painting the true picture of the Second World War needs to read Global Mission for background. Here alone will he find some of the missing pieces in his puzzle... by any yardstick, [Global Mission] is worthy reading for any American.” — Lieutenant General Ira C. Eaker, USAF (Ret.), Air University Quarterly Review “[General Arnold’s] book is a very important contribution to the history of the Second World War; one reads it with passionate interest from start to finish. It is written in a lively way and also with that frankness, that outspokenness, which always surprises French people from the pen of such a high authority. It is also extremely revealing about the American character.” — René Jouan, Revue d’histoire de la Deuxième Guerre mondiale “[This] book will be of enduring value.” — Ordnance

Book Synopsis Reckoning with the U.S. Role in Global Ocean Plastic Waste by : National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine

This book was released on 2022-09 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An estimated 8 million metric tons (MMT) of plastic waste enters the world's ocean each year - the equivalent of dumping a garbage truck of plastic waste into the ocean every minute. Plastic waste is now found in almost every marine habitat, from the ocean surface to deep sea sediments to the ocean's vast mid-water region, as well as the Great Lakes. This report responds to a request in the bipartisan Save Our Seas 2.0 Act for a scientific synthesis of the role of the United States both in contributing to and responding to global ocean plastic waste. The United States is a major producer of plastics and in 2016, generated more plastic waste by weight and per capita than any other nation. Although the U.S. solid waste management system is advanced, it is not sufficient to deter leakage into the environment. Reckoning with the U.S. Role in Global Ocean Plastic Waste calls for a national strategy by the end of 2022 to reduce the nation's contribution to global ocean plastic waste at every step - from production to its entry into the environment - including by substantially reducing U.S. solid waste generation. This report also recommends a nationally-coordinated and expanded monitoring system to track plastic pollution in order to understand the scales and sources of U.S. plastic waste, set reduction and management priorities, and measure progress.

Download or read book Looking Beneath the Surface written by R. Alan Mounier and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than ten thousand years, humans have lived in New Jersey. From Summit to Cape May, from Trenton to the Jersey Shore, the state is a treasure trove of archaeological artifacts, revealing much about those who occupied the region prior to European settlement. As a rule, only the most durable of human creations3⁄4items of stone and pottery3⁄4survive the ravages of time. To complicate matters, the onslaught of our own culture and the indiscriminate looting of sites by greedy collectors have further diminished the cultural materials left behind. The task of the archaeologist is to gather and interpret these scraps for the benefit of science and the public. But digging up relics is a trivial pursuit if the only outcome is a collection of artifacts, however attractive or valuable they may be. Understanding what those relics mean in human terms is crucial. In Looking beneath the Surface, R. Alan Mounier looks at the human past of New Jersey. With particular focus on the ancient past and native cultures, the author tells the story of archaeology in the state as it has unfolded, and as it continues to unfold. New investigations and discoveries continually change our views and interpretations of the past. In jargon-free language, Mounier provides an in-depth introduction offering information to understand general archaeological practices as well as research in New Jersey. Subsequent chapters describe artifact types, archaeological settlements, and burial practices in detail. He concludes with vignettes of twenty-one archaeological investigations throughout the state to illustrate the variability of sites and the accomplishments of dedicated archaeologists, both professional and amateur.
