Book excerpt: When the somewhat disreputable Martin Beckwith builds a midget submarine that uses a novel form of propulsion, he has little idea that an unlikely gang of buccaneers plans to commandeer his vessel for their own nefarious purposes. The daring heist is masterminded by a crafty naval officer called the ‘Admiral’ from his garden in a leafy Hampshire village and draws together a disparate band of crewmates which includes a feisty female naval officer, a young executive, an attractive pub landlady. In this light-hearted tale, the Admiral and his unlikely buccaneers are pitched against the inventor, who will stop at nothing to get his submarine back in some South Coast Shenanigans.

Book excerpt: 1964: Mods clash with Rockers in Brighton, creating a moral panic. 1973: ex-Mod band The Who release Quadrophenia, a concept album following young Mod Jimmy Cooper to the Brighton riots and beyond. 1979: Franc Roddam directs Quadrophenia, a film based on Pete Townshend's album narrative; its cult status is immediate. 2013: almost fifty years on from Brighton, this first academic study explores the lasting appeal of 'England's Rebel Without a Cause'. Investigating academic, music, press, and fan-based responses, Glynn argues that the 'Modyssey' enacted in Quadrophenia intrigues because it opens a hermetic subculture to its social-realist context; it enriches because it is a cult film that dares to explore the dangers in being part of a cult; it endures because of its 'emotional honesty', showing Jimmy as failing, with family, job, girl, and group; it excites because we all know that, at some point in our lives, 'I was there!'

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A brilliant polymath and part of the 'first wave' of British Romanticism, Thomas Manning was one of the first Englishmen to study Chinese language and culture. Like famous friends including Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Charles Lamb, Manning was inspired by the French Revolution and had ambitious plans for making a better world. While his contemporaries turned to the poetic imagination and the English countryside, Manning looked further afield – to China, one of the world’s most ancient and sophisticated civilizations. In 1790s Britain, China was terra incognita. Manning undertook a quest to learn the secrets of its language and culture. His travels included the salons of Napoleonic Paris, a period as a prisoner of war, a dramatic shipwreck and, disguised as a Buddhist pilgrim, a trek through the Himalayas to Tibet, where he met the Dalai Lama. But when he returned to England, his ideas confronted an increasingly Sinophobic climate and he failed to publish the grand work his peers had expected for so long. After his death, his outward-looking vision was eclipsed by the English-rural poetic vision of Romanticism, and he was forgotten. Manning’s extraordinary story, here told in full for the first time using recently discovered archival sources, sheds a new light on English Romanticism and the course of cultural exchange between Britain and Asia at the dawn of the nineteenth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many Canadians, the small province of New Brunswick on Canada's scenic east coast is "a nice place to visit but no place to live," plagued for generations by outmigration and economic stagnation. In The Fiddlehead Moment Tony Tremblay challenges this potent stereotype by showcasing the work of a group of literary modernists who set out to change the meaning of New Brunswick in the national lexicon. Alfred Bailey, Desmond Pacey, Fred Cogswell, and a formidable group of local poets and cultural workers - collectively, New Brunswick's Fiddlehead School - sought to restore New Brunswick's literary reputation by adapting avant-garde modernist practices to the contours of the province, opening it to the contemporary world while also encouraging writers to make it their subject. The result was a non-urban form of modernism that was as responsive to technical innovation as to the human geographies of New Brunswick. By placing New Brunswick writers and critics at the forefront of Canadian literature in the midcentury modernist project, Tremblay adds an important new chapter to our understanding of Canadian modernism. The Fiddlehead Moment is the first critical examination of this group's considerable influence. Whether through Bailey's ethnomethodology, Pacey's critical ordering, or Cogswell's editorial eclecticism in the Fiddlehead magazine and Fiddlehead Poetry Books, authors in New Brunswick, Tremblay argues, had a profound impact on writing in Canada.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Story of a Boy! By: John Dwight Marchalleck John Dwight Marchalleck was born in the parish of St. Andrew, Jamaica. At the age of three, his mother migrated to the U.S.A. and his new guardian parents, her mom and dad, became the main lifelong influence for John as reflected in The Story of a Boy! John was a happy child, growing up with his grandmother and grandfather. In this book, he reflects on hardships like drought affecting his hometown mountain village from time to time. His farmer grandfather and philanthropic grandmother were his primary tutors and idols. His grandfather was a storyteller who provided candy for the village children who stopped by to visit and listen. Like many grandchildren, John was sent away to boarding school and later to attend high school in Kingston but continued to communicate with them through written letters, a habit encouraged by his grandma. While in high school, his fondness for writing was also reflected by mystery stories John wrote and were aired on JBC (Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation). That earned the boy extra pocket money. But this fostered bad habits, as John began to frequent the billiard halls in Kingston, which prevented him from going home directly after school. This was reported to the headmaster, who meted out fifty-page homework essays for John in lieu of other detention to curb the boy’s after-school bad habits. This enhanced John’s appetite more for writing; however, rather than stop him playing billiards or frequenting the pool halls, the boy could effortlessly produce written assignments, on most given topics, free of grammatical errors. In 1963 John migrated and joined his biological mom in the U.S.A. Later, as a student at the Benjamin Franklin School of Accounting and Finance in Washington, D.C., John worked and published articles in both the National Geographic Society’s School and News Services. A long drought in writing from John came, however, but now The Story of a Boy! can be happily shared with the world.

Book excerpt: When English city boy Simon follows his girlfriend across the world to her family farm in remotest New Zealand, he has no idea he'll be force-fed a meal of beetle larva, get pushed off the road by half a house, and be inspected by indignant penguins and flattened by a giant leaf-blower. As he poisons the milk, dive-bombs the bulls, and loses the herd of cows in a river, will he ever learn to be a farmer, or will he have to stop impersonating a country boy, and return to London?
