Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a hidden treasure of American Civil War history. If you buy it only for the section titled "A Confederate Girl's Diary," you'll find it worth the price of admission.Yet the collection is so much richer than that. Included are excerpts from the famous diary of Mary Chesnut, close friend of Mrs. Jefferson Davis and much quoted in Ken Burns' great Civil War documentary. The first sections of the book include fascinating details about services women gave to the southern war effort:"A jar of pickles, a contribution of $.50 cents, shirts, wine, and $5.00 from a Jew, who desired me so to acknowledge."The latter half of the book is composed of short memoirs, "A Confederate Girl s Diary" being one of the most entertaining. While the girl is dismissive of all the talk that Sherman will soon be upon them, she continues taking vocal lessons and finishes a new book..."Les Miserables.""A Southern Household During the Years 1860 to 1865" tells what it was like to run a household during war.Coming from the Daughters of the Confederacy, it should not be surprising that this work is by largely unreconstructed Rebel women, but it is fascinating and an important contribution to Civil War literature.

Book excerpt: Long out of print, this volume of recollections, stories, and verse provides a glimpse of women's lives on the home front-and sometimes in the thick of battle-during the War between the States. Nearly fifty years after the American Civil War, Lucy Worth London Anderson (Mrs. John Huske Anderson) of Fayetteville, N.C., compiled one of the first memorial collections honoring the contributions of women to the cause. Her book North Carolina Women of the Confederacy assembled biographies, anecdotes, letters, reminiscences, and poems concerning Southern women's experience during the war. This early historical text is once again available in a new edition featuring a clean and corrected setting of the type, historical introduction and annotations, and a valuable index of personal and place names. Scholars, geneaologists, and casual readers alike will appreciate the reintroduction of this Southern classic, prepared under the auspices of the UDC Cape Fear Chapter #3. Lucy London Anderson served as North Carolina historian of the United Daughters of the Confederacy in the 1920s. She first published this record of episodes in the history of the Confederate women of her state in 1926.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume Two: The biographical essays in this volume provide new insights into the various ways that South Carolina women asserted themselves in their state and illuminate the tension between tradition and change that defined the South from the Civil War through the Progressive Era. As old rules--including gender conventions that severely constrained southern women--were dramatically bent if not broken, these women carved out new roles for themselves and others. The volume begins with a profile of Laura Towne and Ellen Murray, who founded the Penn School on St. Helena Island for former slaves. Subsequent essays look at such women as the five Rollin sisters, members of a prominent black family who became passionate advocates for women's rights during Reconstruction; writer Josephine Pinckney, who helped preserve African American spirituals and explored conflicts between the New and Old South in her essays and novels; and Dr. Matilda Evans, the first African American woman licensed to practice medicine in the state. Intractable racial attitudes often caused women to follow separate but parallel paths, as with Louisa B. Poppenheim and Marion B. Wilkinson. Poppenheim, who was white, and Wilkinson, who was black, were both driving forces in the women's club movement. Both saw clubs as a way not only to help women and children but also to showcase these positive changes to the wider nation. Yet the two women worked separately, as did the white and black state federations of women's clubs. Often mixing deference with daring, these women helped shape their society through such avenues as education, religion, politics, community organizing, history, the arts, science, and medicine. Women in the mid- and late twentieth century would build on their accomplishments.

Book excerpt: The Civil War never left South Carolina, from its beginning at Fort Sumter in 1861 through the destructive, harrowing days of Sherman's march through the state in 1865. Included here are the stories of Confederate civilians and soldiers who remained true to their cause throughout the perilous struggle. An English aristocrat risked his life to run the blockade and become one of the defenders of Charleston. The Haskells of Abbeville sent seven sons into Confederate service. Many South Carolina women made heart-rending sacrifices, including a disabled woman from Laurens County whose heroic efforts preserved Mount Vernon, the home of George Washington, from wartime ravages. Author Karen Stokes details the lives of men and women whose destinies intertwined with a tragic era in Palmetto State history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Civil War brought enormous hardship and tragedy to America's female population. Yet, it also provided women of all races and social classes with unprecedented opportunities to participate in civic, economic, and military activities that had previously been closed to them. Although officially banned from serving in combat by both the Union and Confederate governments, women played a vital role in each side's war efforts. During the bloodiest conflict in U.S. history, some risked their lives as spies, scouts, and saboteurs, and in some instances, even disguised themselves as men to challenge their foes directly on the battlefield. Others produced and donated desperately needed supplies for the troops, or cared for ill and wounded soldiers. Those at home kept farms and businesses running while their male relations were off fighting. Women and the Civil War describes the important roles women filled while the Union and Confederate armies fought.
