A Far-Away War contributes to a wider understanding of this war in Angola and Namibia. The book does not only look at the war from an "e;old"e; South African (Defence Force) perspective, but also gives a voice to participants "e;on the other side"e; - emphasising the role of the Cubans and Russians. Book excerpt: An essential reference for anyone involved in international affairs, the UNPO Yearbook is the only publication giving access to the material, situations and policies of the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization and its diverse membership. Created by the members themselves in 1991, the UNPO provides a platform for those nations, peoples and minorities not represented in established international forums such as the United Nations. The mission of the organization is to assist its members in advancing their interests effectively through nonviolent means, including diplomacy, use of the UN and other international procedures for the protection of human rights, the exploration of legal options in defending their rights and the development of public awareness and opinion. With a revised member Report format and expanded index, as well as key Conference and Mission reports, the third edition of the UNPO Yearbook is an accessible and valuable tool for researchers, diplomats and policy-makers alike.
Book Synopsis Disarmament and Defence Industrial Adjustment in South Africa by : Peter G. Batchelor
Download or read book Disarmament and Defence Industrial Adjustment in South Africa written by Peter G. Batchelor and published by Sipri Monograph. This book was released on 1998 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Batchelor and Susan Willett analyse the response of the South African defence industry to drastic cuts in military expenditure and the demilitarization of society since the end of the cold war and apartheid, and the stabilization of the regional security situation. The new ANC-led government is seeking to use the resources released - the `peace dividend' - to restructure and revitalize the country's industrial base and to support reconstruction, development, and redistribution. A lively debate on the country's security needs and strategic doctrine is under way. As in other countries, strategies of industrial diversification and conversion have met with limited success. In the absence hitherto of any coherent government policy on defence industrial adjustment, significant skills and technologies have been lost or wasted. This book provides a historical analysis of South Africa's unique opportunity to develop new and innovative policies on defence and security matters, the arms industry and arms exports, and makes a valuable contribution to the international debate on the relationship between disarmament and development.
Book Synopsis Military Expenditure Data in Africa by : Wuyi Omitoogun
Download or read book Military Expenditure Data in Africa written by Wuyi Omitoogun and published by SIPRI Research Reports. This book was released on 2003 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The international reporting of military expenditure data for African states is poor in many respects. Figures that are published are often at variance with the socio-economic realities of the countries. This study examines the availability and reliability of official military expenditure data for six countries in West, Central and East Africa, using a combination of interviews with key actors in the military budgeting process and analysis of official documents in the countries selected. The author concludes that data are indeed available in many of these countries but that the quality of the data varies from country to country. Two main factors account for this - the influence of the donors of economic aid, whose insistence that artain certain maximum level of expenditure on defence should not be exceeded has encouraged the manipulation of data by the countries concerned; and the general loss of capacity in several countries to compile the necessary statistics.

Book Synopsis Human Rights in Development, Volume 4 by : Hugo Stokke
Download or read book Human Rights in Development, Volume 4 written by Hugo Stokke and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2023-03-13 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tenth in a series of yearbooks, this edition contains articles on topical human rights issues as well as surveys of individual countries. A new feature is that more attention is given to `self-monitoring' articles investigating the human rights policies of countries in the North on specific issues and sectors. Another feature is that more effort is given to collaboration between institutions in the North and the South in writing articles and surveys. Both will be strengthened in future editions. The topics covered this year are development aid in support of indigenous peoples in Latin America, Dutch experiences with the linkage of aid to human rights observance in Mozambique, and an evaluation of Norway's human rights policies and aid with regard to the Palestinian areas in the wake of the Oslo Agreement. As a regular feature the Yearbook assesses human rights trends in various countries of the South, covering the full range from civil and political rights to economic, social and cultural rights. This year's edition contains surveys of Cuba, Guatemala, Libya, Senegal, Vietnam and Zimbabwe. Cuba, Libya and Senegal are included for the first time. The Yearbook on Human Rights in Developing Countries is a joint project of the Chr. Michelsen Institute, Bergen; the Danish Centre for Human Rights, Copenhagen; the Icelandic Human Rights Center, Reykjavik; the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Human Rights, Vienna; the Netherlands Institute of Human Rights, Utrecht; the Norwegian Institute of Human Rights, Oslo; and the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, Lund.
