Book excerpt: "(From the preface) Every one who has attempted to introduce students to the study of Philosophy by way of its history must have felt the need of having in compact form the most significant documents upon which the interpretations of that history are based, in order that it may be possible from the first to bring the student into direct contact with the sources, so far at least as that may be done through the medium of translations. The primary aim of this book is to supply this need. It is intended to serve either as a companion volume to any History of Philosophy that may be adopted as a text-book, or as a substitute for such a history where the instructor may prefer through his own lectures to give his own interpretation of this philosophical movement. It is hoped that the book may also, as a reference work, prove of value to students of philosophy generally, as well as to all who are interested in the development of ancient thought."--(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2008 APA, all rights reserved).

It is hoped that the book may also, as a reference work, prove of value to students of philosophy generally, as well as to all who are interested in the development of ancient thought. No attempt has been made to make an exhaustive Source Book. I have simply brought together the more significant passages from the earlier philosophers, beginning with Thales and reaching as far as Plotinus. The book includes most of the fragments of the earliest philosophers, together with the passages from the secondary sources which are most important in throwing light upon these fragments. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Simple History of Ancient Philosophy Secondly, being at liberty to determine my own mode of treatment, I have, in most cases, clearly indicated any word that has acquired a philosophical signification, either by a capital letter, inverted commas, or italics. With regard to Greek terms I have had some difficulty. Many are of such importance that an explanation seems necessary, but to have done so in every case would have involved an appearance of pedantry extremely disheartening to the general reader. Hence I have availed myself of the original terms only when I felt my own translation may have needed some explanation, but others of importance have been noted in the Index of Terms' at the end Of the book. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Thinkers, Vol. 3: A History of Ancient Philosophy It is true that the difficulties of thought to which we have alluded were not removed by the new teaching, but only clothed in a different garb. They reappeared in the form of questions such as - How are the fleeting individual things connected with their eternal archetypes? Do they participate in them, or are they copied from them? And what is the precise nature of this participation or process of copying? To these questions Plato never succeeded in returning a satisfactory answer; but, as Aristotle remarks in the above-quoted passage, he left them to be investigated by others. But this is not the place to discuss the consequences of a doctrine whose origin we have not yet completely accounted for. We must once more draw the reader's attention to a fundamental tendency of the human mind, and to its far-reaching effects. Abstractions are clothed by language in the same dress as objects of perception. Both are designated by substantives, and perhaps could not be designated in any other way. In the untrained mind, the Real and the Thing are so closely associated, that in ordinary language the two terms are synonymous. The very word real is derived from res, a thing. Forces, qualities, states, relations, are regarded as entities having the nature of things, and, when they produce lasting impressions upon the mind, as living beings endowed with will - as gods and daemons. After the mythological comes an ontological stage, a naive realism (in the mediaeval sense. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Greek Philosophy The main purpose which I have had in View in writing this book has been to present an account of Greek philosophy which, within strict limits of brevity, shall be at once authentic and interesting - autfientz°c, as being based on the original works themselves, and not on any secondary sources; interesting, as presenting to the ordinary English reader, in language freed as far as possible from technicality and abstruseness, the great thoughts of the greatest men of antiquity on questions of permanent significance and value. There has been no attempt to shirk the really philosophic problems which these men tried in their day to solve; but I have endeavoured to show, by a sympathetic treat ment of them, that these problems were no mere wars of words, but that in fact the philosophers of twenty-four centuries ago were dealing with exactly. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the History of Ancient Philosophy Of the Lectures which follow, the most original are those on Plato and the Platonists, which fill nearly the whole of the second volume. They are, unquestionably, as the Author informs us, the result of patient and conscien tious examination of the original documents; and they may be considered as a perfectly independent contribution to our knowledge of the great master of Grecian wisdom. Of the Dialectic and Physics of Plato they are the only exposition at once accurate and popular with which I am acquainted; being more accurate than the French, and incomparably more popular than the German treatises on those departments of the Platonic philosophy. The Author's intimate familiarity with the metaphysical writings of the last century, and especially with the English and Scotch school of psychologists, has enabled him to illus trate the subtle speculations of which he treats in a manner calculated to render them more intelligible to the English mind than they can be made by writers trained solely in the technicalities of modern German schools, or by those who disdain the use of illustration altogether. To the Ethics and Politics of Plato equal justice has not been done, but from notes which have come into my possession I am inclined to think that this defect was in a great measure supplied in the unwritten Lectures on Ethics to which allusion has been made. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Ancient Philosophy, Vol. 2: Plato and Aristotle This second volume of my History of Ancient Philosophy contains the treatment of Plato and Aristotle, and hence the most remarkable heights achieved by Greek thought. We have been concerned with these two authors many times in wide-rang ing research, but on Plato only in the last few years have we arrived at a satisfactory summary overview, especially in our work Toward a New Interpreta tion of Plato. A Rereading of the Metaphysics of the Great Dialogues in the Light of the Unwritten Doctrines (a preliminary edition in 1984; a revision and amplification as well as a third and fourth edition in 1986; and in were published). Philosophy, or the love of wisdom, which originates in this spirit of inquiry, claims for its legitimate object the elevation of the intellectual' and moral powers; 'since the subjects of thought with which it is conversant have an ennobling tendency. They consist' in the contemplation Of the highest spiritual essence, God; the soul of man; and matter, which com prehends the relations of the body.
